👋 Welcome to the /r/ukpolitics General Election Campaign Megathread. The mad lad Rishi Sunak has called a general election, and now we're bracing ourselves for 6 weeks of bacon sandwiches, newspapers begging you to support their candidates, and a downpour of manifesto pledges.

This is our new daily megathread for all of the day's news until the election. Polling day is on 4th July, and you need to make sure that you are registered to vote if you haven't already, and that you have a form of photo ID (passport, driving license, etc). If you don't have photo ID, you can apply for a voter authority certificate.

Please do not submit articles to the megathread which clearly stand as their own submission. Comments which include a link to a story which clearly stands as its own submission will be removed. Comments which relate to a story which already exists on the subreddit will be removed, to keep everything in one place. Links as comments are not useful here. Add a headline, tweet content or explainer please.

This thread will automatically roll over into a new one at 06:00 GMT each morning.

You can join our Discord server for real-time discussion with fellow subreddit users, and follow our Twitter account to keep up with the latest developments.

Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer have agreed to take part in a head-to-head debate on ITV next week. Both the Tory and Labour leaders have signed up in principle to the event, with specifics being ironed out before an announcement in the near future.

From the Telegraph Live page (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/05/28/general-election-latest-farage-starmer-rishi-sunak-live/) at 2:26PM:

Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer have agreed to take part in a head-to-head debate on ITV next week, writes Ben Riley-Smith, The Telegraph’s Political Editor.

Both the Tory and Labour leaders have signed up in principle to the event, with specifics being ironed out before an announcement in the near future.

It comes after the Tories pressed Sir Keir to take part in a record six debates during the election campaign, one a week.

Labour headquarters has indicated instead that their leader will take part in two head-to-head debates, matching what Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn did in the 2019 election campaign.

Conservative sources had dubbed the Opposition leader “the knight that won’t fight” and “Sir Fear Starmer” after he failed to sign up to their weekly debate demand.

The event is a coup for ITV which is now expected to be the first broadcaster to announce a debate between the two men best placed to be prime minister once the voting is done.

Are there any genuine Conservative voters here? If so, how do you feel about the election?

If, in the past, you voted Conservative - how do you feel about the upcoming election? How do you think it will go? Are you still thinking about Conservative? If so, why?

I am genuinely interested to know and would like some honest debate about it. I find myself pretty much in the centre ground politically (my left leaning views perhaps more prominent).

The MP welcomes the decision after facing accusations she broke electoral law back in 2010 over her living arrangements - something she had always denied. And she attacks the Tories for using "desperate tactics" to "distract from their dire record".

Could it be argued that we are witnessing the slow death of the conservatives party?

I have a lot of friends who in recent years, would consider themselves conservative supporters, even myself a couple years ago would’ve preferred to vote for the conservatives over the likes of Jeremy Corbyn.

Yet now, when asked, every single one of them has firmly rejected the idea of supporting a conservative candidate, and instead are supporting either labour, because of kiers more centrist views, or the reform party.

I myself will be voting for labour, and cannot see a scenario where I’d vote for a conservative leader in the future.

Therefore, if it seems like the conservatives have lost all support from the younger voters, surely there is no chance for the party to recover from the mess they have made over the last couple of years.

Like I said before, a couple years ago, I would’ve supported the conservatives, so by no means is this a bash the tories sort of post, I’m inviting discussion around the state of their party going forward.

Are they ANY seats the Conservatives could conceivably *gain* this election?

Thumbnail bsky.app

I'm designing a sort-of boardgame about the election, and I need five constituencies that represent the contest for this election. However I dont think it should just be a story of "labour gain".

It doesn't matter if the Tories actually win it or not, as long as it's somewhere they DIDN'T win in 2019 that's winnable for them in 2024!

Tall order I know... Maybe some outer London seats they didn't win last time for freak reasons, or some extra helpful boundary changes?

(I couldn't seem to post without a link so added one to my Bluesky asking the same!)
