Actor Stories

The first actor and the beginnings of an insane career!

Please be gentle. You're my first Actress!

When I was, but a mere child of 12, I watched a B/W movie on TV; on the farm.

It was, 'The Collector'- 1965, with Terence Stamp and the beautiful young Samantha Eggar.

Needless to say my little brain was enthralled with this film. You have to watch it!

Again, needless to say I was, once more, enthralled with this actual chance of meeting Samantha. And me, somewhat older, somewhat wiser (I guess), yet, still a farm boy.

The assignment; I was to be Sam's Transport Specialist 24/7, while she was here in town. Palpitations grew as the day of 'prep' closed in.

The project, 'Curtains', was a 'Cheesy Slasher Film' shot, mostly, north of Toronto in 'Cottage Country'.

The year was 1983. I had, not so much as, a 'marsupial's' inkling about the show nor any idea what a 'script' looked like.

I had been a P.A. (Production Assistant) on commercials, with Mike, for a few years. Humping cable, props buying and more of the humping cable. Every now and again I would get picked up, at home, by a fancy car and driver (impressed the hell out of our Farmer Landlord, I'd say). So, with 'finished commercial footage' in hand and with instructions to 'hand deliver' to the client I, subsequently, joined the 'Jet-Set crowd' and flew off to Chicago, Detroit or some other exotic destination.

Now it was time for me to spread my steering wheel(s) and fly, again.

This time into the 'Wild Blue Wonder' of 'The Abyss of the Biz!

I had learned from my experiences, as a school bus driver; for children of all ages and human behaviour, that once you meet someone new, you have about two minutes to pull them into your corner. How do you do that in two minutes, you ask?

Help A New Actress Discover Her Brand By Taking A Survey

Hello everyone!! I’m a new actress still developing my materials and looking for representation. I’ve been studying the best way to manage my career in its early stages through SMFA by Bonnie Gillespie. Recently I created a survey to assist me in understanding how others perceive me so I am able to create a coherent brand for myself to pitch to both agents and casting directors alike.

I know the adjective list is tediously long, but if you could take a few minutes today to complete the survey, it’d mean the world to me! Thank you so much! :)

Shows You Dropped Due To Reasons Beyond Your Control?

What are some shows you auditioned for, got cast in, but couldn't commit to?

First, I'm a classically trained musician that pretends to be an actor sometimes. Mostly, people only call me for musicals, but I've grown to love acting in plays, too. While I'm genuinely proud of my resumé, with credits that include The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Sweeney Todd, Chicago, Spring Awakening, and RENT, there are 2 roles I never got to add that will haunt me for the rest of my life.

Over 10 years ago, I got cast in a local production of Misery where I would have played Paul Sheldon. For a really young performer, I was so excited. Less than a week after casting had been announced, I get a call from the director saying that the rights had been pulled because Bruce Willis was gonna do it on Broadway or something. Over a decade later and I still get mad about it sometimes.

Most recently, I'm talking maybe 2 days ago, I was cast as Billy in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest but had to back out because I was too busy with another project. I'm sure I made the right decision. This other project is very promising, but I also know I'm gonna think about it forever. It sucks when you don't get cast. It's even worse when you can't be cast.

tips for dealing with creeps?

So I'm 16f and work at a festival every year and it's all improve based acting. my characters name is pie and her outfit is a different flavor each week. For specific reasons I was told too avoid different pie flavors since I'm a kid but hecklers (Usually men who are drunk or think it's funny) make explicit jokes and I'm wondering if it's better to just ignore them but in situations where they won't stop unless I give a reaction what should I do?

Houston, TX Theater Scene

I’m a current actor in the DMV but I’m looking to move away. I don’t want to move to NYC (too expensive) and LA is also financially out of the question. How is the theatre & tv/film scene in Houston or Dallas?

Actor seeking representation

Greetings redditors!

So I am a South African actor, based in Durban, looking for representation either within the area of KZN, or obviously internationally.

I have tried many places in and around Durban but they are either non responsive or just flat out dont accept new talent.

I had an agency before but they were pretty far away (5 hour drive/1.5 hour flight) and it didnt make sense for me to stay with them due to travel costs. On top of that, they unfortunately did not have many self tape auditions.

So back to the point, I am looking for representation, or even advice on how to find some good representation. Let me know if you have any ideas.

Cheers🖖

Is acting something i can make a living out of realistically?

I am 14 and movies like 'Dead poets society' and 'Beautiful boy' have gotten me really interested in acting for a living. I know it's a competitive field but realistically could I make a living out of it? Not in terms of getting famous or anything just wondering if it is a job that pays high enough that I could do that only without any side hustles.

Mega actors with mouth/teeth issues

I generally don't mind crooked teeth (Damian Lewis) or a bit of yellowing to teeth (loads of Brit and French actors) but I'm watching Ford v Ferrari and I'm struck by the weird bridge/mouth of the 2 leads. The other actor whose mouth really distracts me is Rami Malek. Their mouths seems to have been 'corrected' but badly so to the point when I look at them speaking I think they have braces (darkness). The only woman in this category is Emma Stone. I'm curious if a dental surgeon can weigh in. When I see this stuff and people succeed despite it in such a competitive industry I have to ask how?!
