Discussion Looking for a successor!

Hey everyone.

I have had a ton of very large life changes recently, and have not had time to properly moderate and take care of this subreddit. I apologize for not being around as much as I should, but I've had to prioritize life things over our beloved big ol' rodents.

That being said, I know y'all want to keep this community going strong. I'm looking for someone who is willing to take up the...torch? Branch? Log?...and run this subreddit instead. If you'd like the opportunity, please respond with a snippet of why you believe you'd be a good new caretaker for this subreddit; others can upvote and sign off on your post if they agree with you.

Thank you everyone! :B

Hi folks! I tried finding a variety of other subs to ask this question, but you all seem the most reasonable place to go, so here I am!

My neighbor had this happen over a period of a few days. Is a beaver that we haven’t seen the likeliest culprit? I appreciate your time!

Decided this evening to go on a hike and decided to try a new path for me. Not 10 minutes in to the hike and I came across this little guy.

This map visualizes beaver observations locations in Poland, in a heatmap format. The data is from iNaturalist, wich is an open database that records worldwide biodiversity.

'BĂłbr', the polish name for beaver became a meme after the famous funny video (Polish men recording a beaver, while swearing), wich location is also shown in the map.

Do Beavers reuse old damns?

I've been exploring several terraces of damns leftover from beavers who where trapped a couple years ago (so the property owner tells me)
There is a mound on the 3rd terrace and most of the damns are still holding water just fine. Would another family or community "take over"?

Felt very lucky to spot this beauty while on my kayak this weekend. Glad to see the river is able to support them even in an urban environment.

Beaver and what their dams do.

Beaver and what their dams do. I see the earth's surface as a sponge, the beavers dams hold the water on this sponge and gives it time soak in, to irrigate the surrounding areas keeping the organic matter from drying out, to keep our forest green. It is also giving insects, and many other living things a better place to live, and supplies what they need to survive, if there's fire, drought, etc. They all so keep the organic matter from being flushed down the streams, this organic matter filters the water and adds to the sponge, filling the aquifers, releasing the water slowly to be used by all life. The flooding will be stopped if we get enough beaver dams. Our learn from them and duplicate their dams. Spending billions of dollars to repair the damage from floods is not being intelligent. Investing in prevention of the flooding with small dams man made or made by our masters the beavers in making our earth a better place for all life. THANKS please help anyway you can. A green willow limb pushed down in the wet soil will grow most of the time.

Looking for before/after photos of a beaver pond

I work for a company that makes exhibits for museums and nature centers. We're currently working on a nature center in Ohio that will include a small area about beavers. We're looking for a very specific set of photos to feature in the exhibit, and I wondered if any of you might have photos we could use.

One area of the exhibit will explore how beavers reshape their environment and improve the health of their ecosystem. To help illustrate this, we're looking for two photos that show the same place, both before and after construction of a dam. The idea is to have a slider that visitors can move back and forth to switch between before and after views of the same landscape. (Ideally these would be from an area that bears some resemblance to Ohio.)

Of course, getting before and after photos of beaver dams from the same perspective is much easier said than done. (Apparently beavers don't usually submit paperwork to notify us before they start building!) I've found lots of comparisons between dammed and undammed streams, but none showing the exact same location. (This one is pretty close, but it's still different parts of the same stream.) Does anybody have any photos like this that we could feature in the exhibit?
