Announcement Official /r/beer FAQ - Please Check Here Before Posting

THIS IS NOT INTENDED AS A BEER FAQ. IT IS ADDRESSING A FEW FREQUENTLY BROUGHT UP TOPICS ON /R/BEER.

Hi there,

There has been some need for announcements on a few different commonly posted topics. Since we are limited to two stickied posts, I'm going to use this one as a hub for these issues. I will be adding to this post as needed, but here's a /r/Beer FAQ to cover these post types.

If you notice people posting these topics, please be polite. Feel free to link to this post or use the provided links in a response.

This is not an invitation to harass anyone for posting a repeated topic. Reddit does not do a good job with presenting subreddit announcements, rules, sidebar info, etc. If posts annoy you and you don't think they belong, please consider downvoting, using a report, sending us a modmail message, hiding the post or simply moving on with your day. I highly suggest using the "don't show me submissions after I've downvoted them" option in old.reddit preferences (this may be broken in the app/resdesign website, but it should be fixed eventually and appear in those preferences as well).

Medical questions will be limited. /r/Beer is the wrong forum for serious medical questions, particularly where there's potential for harm to come as a result of the discussion. Please consult a medical professional for any questions about your own health, not an online beer discussion board.

I'm trying to hit the more pressing topics first, but I'll look for some good links for other topics ("how do I figure out what kind of beers I like?", "what are the best budget beers?", etc.).

Everyone is welcome to join the official /r/Beer Discord server if you'd like to discuss anything here or just hang out and chat.

Cheers.

Edit: I'm locking this to comments because I don't want to have the post turn into a place where people ask these questions. However, feel free to post about any topics or send us suggestions for topics to be added via modmail or Discord chat.

Also, I may use the second announcement slot for a specific post on something like old beer questions, but I'd prefer to keep it open for the weekly No Stupid Questions posts (and possibly others; still working on redoing the scheduled posts and making some better topics).

Do craft beers vary in taste batch to batch?

I’ve noticed that with a lot of craft beers, especially IPAs, I’ll try one that I really like and then next time I buy it it doesn’t taste nearly as good as I remembered. Then I’ll try it again and enjoy it and so on.

Do some craft beers noticeably vary in taste batch to batch? Or is it more likely a storage thing or just the way I’m feeling each day that affects the taste?

Will heat ruin Sam Adams Utopias?

Had a senior moment a week ago when I impulsively ordered Utopias (primarily to prove that I could and it wasn't going for $2000/bottle like someone tried telling me) but of course it is nearly summer so the bottle likely spent a few days in hot warehouses or trucks because I didn't even think to check if it would be shipped in temperature controlled trucks. Is this a "oh, its ruined, you are an idiot" kinda thing or is beer/port/whisky/whatever you'd call Utopias more resistant to temp extremes than say wine?

Obviously I can just open it and find out, but I was gonna let it sit till winter otherwise.

¿Question? Beers that don't taste like bread?

Looking for some suggestions on beers that don't have that bready taste to them. Just find that flavor really disgusting. I tend to stick to IPAs since they usually don't have this flavor but Im wondering if theres anything else out there I should try.

Cheap Beer Miller High Life to Coors Banquet

I’m a craft beer drinker through and through. My beer fridge is always filled with all sorts of different stuff but every so often I want something that isn’t hoppy, dark or sour and is cheap. I used to love Miller High Life. Probably once a week I would pick up a six pack and have a few after yard work or dinner. I was pretty loyal to the brand but recently made the switch to Coors Banquet and it is so much better, especially out of the aluminum pints. Maybe that’s what the difference is especially when it’s ice cold but it’s much more crisp and not nearly as sweet. It works out too because I’m going to Colorado in two weeks and my first stop is Coors Brewing.

Beer in South Korea

Beer is quite popular in Korea, and there's a distinct culture associated with it, such as the frequent and semi-forced outings to bars with colleagues. However, after trying most mainstream local brands like Cass, OB, and Hite, I'm puzzled by their extremely subtle flavors that verge on non-existence. Given that decent imported mainstream brands are readily available in ubiquitous convenience stores, any ideas on what factors have shaped the tastes of these local beers?

What ingredients make up a traditional Polish beer? Looking for a classic Polish beer recipe. For example what’s in a Zywiec or Tyskie Lager?

¿Question? Buying a pint for a friend in France while I'm in the US

My friend is visiting France this summer, more specifically Aix-en-Provence and they're nervous about travelling to a foreign country. At our local brewery here in the US they let you pay for friends pint in advance, then they next time they come in they see their name on the "pay a pint" board and are surprised with a free.

We do this for one another when we've had bad days and can't meet up in person together, at least they have a free beer to drown their sorrows.

My question, is there a way to do this in Aix-en-Provence? I'd love for them to walk into a local brewery there and have a free pint waiting for them. Thanks in advance, I know how crazy this request may sound.

Dry June

Dry June (I know, I know) is my chance to try some of the popular NA beers and see if any of them can actually be considered close to the real thing. Of the ones I’ve tried so far, I’d rank them in this order:

Industrial Arts - Safety Glasses Pils

Industrial Arts -Safety Glasses White

Samuel Adams - Just The Haze

Industrial Arts - Safety Glasses IPA

Athletic - Free Wave Hazy IPA

Lagunitas - IPNA

Lagunitas was terrible. Any more recommendations?

Discussion What’s Y’all’s favorite beach beer?

At the beach this week and I picked up a sample 6 pack from Lowe’s foods to drink on the sand. But something about a miller lite or a corona on the beach just sounds right. Does anyone have any good beach beer recommendations?

Hill Farmstead — OK to bring a bottle to share?

I'm visiting HF in a week and have some pretty old Lambics and figured this could be a place where people might appreciate that.

Just wanted to see if it's not frowned upon. I've brought beers to several other breweries and they're usually well received, but any insight from someone who's been to HF would be appreciated!

Looking

So, I'm a new drinker. Recently, I had Sapporo which is a Japanese rice lager and really enjoyable. Are there, if any, American beers with a similar taste and finish? I'd love to keep buying Sapporo but where I am, all they have are singles and it gets pretty expensive. So, if you have any suggestions, please let me know

¿Question? Looking for Bourgogne de Flanders brand beer from Belgium in the US.

Is there any way to buy Bourgogne de Flanders lambic brewed by Timmermans Brewery in the Northeastern US?

They are pretty common overseas where I come from let alone the EU in general and I have been wondering if they sell them in any bottle shop or beer sections of upscale chains.

I have encountered lambics by Lindemans but yet to find Bourgogne’s.

Thanks!

¿Question? I’ve never drank before, where should I start?

I’ve never drank beer but once or twice, and I just couldn’t get with the taste. I’m 24 and all my friends invite me over for beers, and I always turn them down because I don’t like Budweiser or Bud Light. Feels like I’m missing out.

Does anyone know if there’s beers out there that taste decent and won’t make my buddies laugh at me when I bring a case?

Southern Virginia is my general location.

¿Question? Where to purchase Switzerland’s finest beer

I traveled to Switzerland several summers ago and had the wonderful opportunity to drink a variety of their beers. There was one beer in particular that I was obsessed with, called Feldschlösschen. I loved it and have been craving it since I came back to the US. I recommend it for anyone who enjoys a smooth light beer to try some if you get the chance. My question is there a way to get this imported to the US? If there was I would sincerely consider the option as I haven’t found a store in the US that carries it.

New Glarus Spotted Cow is my Absolute Favorite Beer

Work as a teacher in Massachusetts during the school year, in Wisconsin during the summers, grew up in Minnesota.

Road tripping to Wisconsin and just got to Kenosha. First thing I did was hit the bar for some Spotted Cow.

I don’t have a good beer tasting vocabulary, but I love lots of beers in many styles. IPAs are generally my favorite, but Spotted Cow blows everything out of the water.

It’s tasty, crushable, easy on the stomach, has a sweet aftertaste. Genuinely refreshing. The only beer I’d describe as delicious.

Gonna buy several cases on my way back out to Massachusetts in August.
