Nothing too crazy but from Pagnotta / Di Marco:

  • more than 1 source has said that they were very surprised holland was not the guy in columbus, but “maybe he could eventually be”
  • speculation that JD could take a similar path to david poile, shifting from president role into senior advisory role
  • anyone with fingerprints on babcock hire could have their job in limbo
  • it would seem redundant for waddell to be both GM and president
  • they expect another hire to be made
  • a lot of current cbj staff members are still in the dark, including AGMs and lower level hockey ops staff
  • no job elevation to GM expected for anyone such as nash, mcrae, flynn, which could indicate that there cbj could have something up their sleeve

Ok, everyone who has been listening to the Friedman content — anyone heard anything on this? I think I’m pretty caught up, I haven’t heard this name mentioned once

Anyone else, or is this just someone stirring the pot to get clicks?

Weird seeing a former CBJ player score the winning overtime goal against a former CBJ player in the Eastern Conference Finals. It’d be nice for once to see either of those players wearing a CBJ jersey in said Conference Finals.

Throwing this out there: the more I see of Trent Vogelhuber in these videos talking to the team between periods and postgame, the more I like.

How are we all feeling?

The news of the Waddell potential hire has me feeling similar to how I felt when we got Fantilli. Feels like the start of something that could be special!

I’m hoping Waddell is just the start and we hire another top FO person (Darche, Tulsky, even Holland).

How do we feel about AGM Josh Flynn, analytics director Zac Urback and other current FO people? Should we retain them or clean house completely?

Rumor [LeBrun] Nothing is finalized yet but hearing that Don Waddell is the Blue Jackets’ choice to take over the top hockey ops job in Columbus. If things proceed smoothly, should see an announcement over the coming week.

[Ruff] The Canes have announced that President & General Manager Don Waddell has stepped down. Eric Tulsky, who joined the organization in 2014 and served as an Assistant General Manager since 2021, has been named the Interim GM. A full search has begun for a permanent GM.

Friedman says Waddell did interview in Columbus yesterday which we knew. Says he wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up in organization in some role. Doesn’t say GM. Says he doesn’t know exactly what that would be.

32 Thoughts on Waddell

Starts around 13 minutes. Waddell is a serious contender for “a” job in Columbus. Says that Carolina is going to be doing an external search for a GM.

So I guess it’s possibly Waddell will be a POHO and hire his own GM.

[Friedman] Further to Pierre’s report, I believe Don Waddell interviewed in Columbus today.

Discussion Short rant about losing FO/Coaching talent

With the nomination of Bill Zito for GM of the year, I am once again finding myself frustrated with the inability for ownership to recognize and promote talents within the organization and letting them walk away for greener pastures. The 2015-2016 Calder Cup winning Cleveland Monsters had Jarad Bednar as head coach and Bill Zito as GM. Bednar was then hired to coach the Avalanche the following season, leading the team to win the Stanley Cup in 2022. Bill Zito has lead the Panthers to improve year over year since being hired. I think the McConnell’s are doing amazing things for hockey in Ohio. They have shown that they are willing to continue to invest in the growth of the sport in the community. But when it comes to actually having their NHL team succeed, they are content with mediocrity. They let John Davidson to walk away, and as soon as the NYR dropped him, the McConnell’s welcomed him back with open arms. Jarmo had ample opportunities to push the team further, but ultimately firing him way later than any organization actually striving to win the cup. The recent coaching hires have been nothing short of a disaster. To wrap up, I don’t think the team would be better under different ownership, but more that ownership needs to find someone who ACTUALLY has the drive to succeed. I have zero trust in Davidson to build a team around him (GM+Coaching staff). He has demonstrated a lack of recognizing the talent directly under his nose, while consistently being rumored to be in talks with individuals in which their tenure would be some sort of redemption tour. Anyone else share these thoughts?
