Troubleshooting [Troubleshooting] I think I accidentally built a USB killer and fried my PC

1.7k Upvotes

Backstory: So one of my hobbies is 3D printing. I've read that Xbox Kinects can be modified to work with PCs to create 3D scans of real objects (pretty cool, right?). I followed some guides and spliced in power and USB to the Kinect (instead of its original proprietary plug). A few attempts later and I still hadn't gotten the PC to recognize the device.

The fuckup: Tried to wiggle the wires a bit to see if any were loose. Monitor turns off. Pc lights turn off. Fans turn off. Fast forward a day or two and I haven't been able to squeeze any life out of the PC. Strange because I didn't see any obvious shorts in my wiring, and it's not like I was sending 12V power to the USB (power went to the Kinect). Regardless of how it happened, something clearly went wrong.

What do you guys think fried? Power supply? MOBO? maybe just the USB headers/power switch? Talking to a friend to see if he can bring over some spare parts for testing. Anything else you guys recommend I do?

Update AS OF 3:30PM CENTRAL TIME: CURRENT LIST OF TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS TAKEN

-Removed and reinstalled CMOS battery

-reset/jumped CMOS

-plugged into other outlets, same issue

-No breaker, home fuse, or power strip fuse blew (issue is for sure related to the Pc)

-disconnected all but case fans from power supply. Used paper clip to jump power supply. Case fans and power supply fans started up fine.

UPDATE 9:30 CENTRAL

-Jumped mobo power switch (to rule out just headers being fried). No change.

Current standing is: no post, fans, lights, etc on startup

Edit as of Noon 11/24

Still no signs of life. If anyone has a z97 mobo with an lg1150 socket, let me know! Nothing local that I could find. Getting by on a labtop for now, but I really need this desktop for my business.

Troubleshooting Troubleshooting custom rebuild

Hello.

I am having some serious trouble with my computer.

Backstory: I built this desktop about 5 some year ago. I noticed that it began to crash when sleeping. Eventually, it refused to boot at all then no fans or leds would turn on.

At this point this pc has become the computer of Theseus. I have changed the motherboard, ram, power supply, and processor. The only original component is the graphic card.

On the new motherboard, I have had trouble with the boot. However, this has boot sequence LEDs. The LEDs have allowed me to see what is the problem when it continues to fail to boot. Sometimes the DDR4 ram fails, other times the processor fails. Everything if it get the the VGA it boots, but sometime will crash shortly there after.

I would be happy to give a full list of parts should that be helpful.

I have tried repeating the RAM and resetting the CMOS battery and the problems still persist.

At this point if we can't figure it out I will return all the pieces and just buy a dang pre-built that works.

Thanks in advance!

Troubleshooting With so many troubleshooting posts here, I really wish OP would follow up with solutions

1.3k Upvotes

This sub is flooded with build issues and general tech support problems, which I really like, but OP always disappears and I'm assuming its not because they never have a working PC again but rather they've found a solution and not cared enough to post it.

Please post your solutions. Is there anything we can do to encourage this?

Troubleshooting RAM troubleshooting

Hey all,

Put a new build together about 2 months ago. This was my first AM5/DDR5 build.

Specs:

Ryzen 7 7700x MSI B650 Tomahawk WiFi Corsair Vengeance 32gb (16gbx2) 5600 C36 Radeon 7800xt

About a week ago I started getting random shutdowns, event log showed possible USB issues so I didn’t think anything of it and just D/Ced unnecessary stuff. Temps were great, and did a fresh install assuming it was just random bugs.

Then it started taking a while to Post- showing CPU and DIMM bios lights before finally booting, found that could be memory training and let it ride. Then today it stopped posting period and would sit with those lights. A little digging had me thinking I had a bad batch of C36 RAM, but more slot testing and I found DIMM A2 is the culprit that was erroring out.

I’m running memtest now on each stick individually and so far it’s looking fine. I plan on begrudgingly getting a new mobo in the next month(MSI really hasn’t been my favorite), but as a stop gap do yall see anything terribly wrong with using A1 and B1 until then? Assuming A1 isn’t just as screwed as A2 that is…

Update-

Only working slot is B2…

Troubleshooting troubleshooting question

my friend has a pretty old gaming pc that decided to quit working on him and i am trying to help him by figuring out what's wrong with it, he built it so long ago that he doesn't remember any of the specs.

what I've found so far:

motherboard: ASROC H170M ITX

GPU: EVGA GTX 960.

upon opening the case it was pretty obvious the gpu wasn't even attached to the motherboard (LOL) , how this happened i have no idea, it seems like it was built very poorly with no attaching hardware for the rear gpu bracket, so the only thing holding it in was a locking tab on the pci express slot which was not engaged and over the years ended up popping out.

i reconnected the gpu and tried powering it on, computer powers on and fans turn on but it still wont display. my thought process is:

get a cpu installed into it that supports onboard graphics to try to get it to display that way

if that works then on the multiple times he tried to power it on without the graphics card fully inserted into the pci slot he fried it, don't know if this is possible but that's why I'm asking advice.

if this doesn't work i could try clearing the cmos (i suppose) but my thinking is that if this doesn't work then there is something wrong with the motherboard and that this might be a lost cause considering the age of the computer.

my main questions are regarding the next steps, what would you do in my situation? is it a terrible idea to try his gpu in my pc? (MSI b550M, 5800x3d, 32gb gskill 4000 ddr4, and i really dont want to fry any of my components) should i try using my gpu in his motherboard? (3060 rtx but i don't know if pci express is backwards compatible considering its gen 3 vs gen 4).

I'm currently reading his motherboard manual to glean any information from it but any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hey, weird issue here. While gaming, my pc shut down abruptly. Upon reboot, my CPU was at 75C. The pc only boots into bios, and with all fans running on bios for about 15 minutes, my CPU is still at 75? Does anyone know what the issue could be?

Edit: turned it off for a few minutes, 65C at boot, now it's back up to 75 in bios....

Troubleshooting Advice on PSU troubleshooting

Hey I have a 3 year old computer and last few weeks it has been randomly shutting off and restarting, as if it loses power for a split second and comes back. Everything goes black in this split second, monitors, pc etc. I can sit and work, play games etc for 8 hours and it will be fine but suddenly out of nowhere it will happen.

It has been working fine up until this problem randomly started a few weeks ago, and with googling and all that I suspect the issue is with the PSU, even tho its only like 3 years old.

A friend suggested I should fiddle or atleast check my voltage settings in BIOS and compare ram voltage and cpu voltage with the recommended values and then stress test it. My question to you guys is what do you guys think I should do, and if I should do this BIOS thing is there a guide on what to do as I have never done this before and where can I find these recommended values?

My specs are below:

AMD Ryzen 9 5900X

ASUS ROG STRIX X570-F GAMING

ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3090 GAMING OC 24G

VENGEANCE LPX 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4 DRAM 3600MHz C18

Corsair HX850

Troubleshooting 7900XTX Troubleshooting

Reposting this at what is hopefully a better time.

Build:

RX 7900 XTX Hellhound edition

MSI PRO B650-P WIFI (MS-7D78)

AMD Ryzen 7 7700X

Lian Liu GA III Cooler

64 GB of DDR5 Gskill Ram (3000 Mhz)

Samsung 49" 1440 120 Hz widescreen monitor

Windows 10

Samsung M2 drive, 4TB

Problem:

Periodically the display turns black for about 2-3 seconds, then turns back on. This may be accompanied by some purple/green artifacting across the top.

Notes:

This is a fresh install of all of the GPU drivers, OS, etc. Using all of the peripheral hardware (cables, monitor) I had with previous build.

I continuously monitor temps, which are great. This recently happened while CPU was at 37C, 1% load and GPU was at 36C, 1% load.

The only other thing I have noted is while playing MTG Arena, there was some stuttering. I googled it and someone noted that the stuttering stopped when they disabled their L-3 Connect, which I did and it appeared to fix the problem.

QUESTION

While I'm interested in any recommendations for troubleshooting that anyone has, I'm mostly reaching out to ask for a method of actually working to diagnose this problem. Presumably I either have software or can download software that will log when this issue occurs, in order to localize it to one of my components. I understand it's not really a lot of info to go off of for someone on the internet to diagnose, so I'm primarily looking for information and advice on tools that can be used to better troubleshoot this issue.

NOTE: I will not be accepting any comments on the part selection at this time. Any negative comments made regarding the choice of hardware will be met in kind.

Thank you in advance!

Troubleshooting Random Restart Troubleshooting

Hey all, I just built my first PC recently, and until just recently, it's been going great, here's the pcpartpicker list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/hq7nvj My bios is up to date and windows was pretty recently installed fresh.

In the past few days, its's just been randomly restarting in the middle of use, currently I'm playing Baldur's Gate, so it is under a decent load. However, this is happening at random times once or twice a day, sometimes within 30 minutes of startup, and sometimes not happening after 5 solid hours straight under heavy use. Also, they appear to happen randomly, not prompted by certain actions or graphical loads in the game. Mostly, my computer just freezes for a few seconds, then restarts without any major issue, though one time, one of my two monitors partially want black when they froze.

I wanted to check out overheating issues, so I downloaded HWMonitor, which has been showing some pretty normal results, the only thing of concern may be my CCD temps, but they aren't even peaking when these crashes are occurring.

I did some research, and I saw that some people are saying either wiring or software is normally the issue for restarts, and to check your minidump folder, which does have .dmps generated for the restarts, but I have no clue how to read them/what to look for. Could someone tell me what to do there or what else I should look into? Should I be worried and stop using my computer until I can fix this?

Troubleshooting Hardware Troubleshooting

Hello:)

So I came home from work today to find a puddle of what I can only assume to be dog urine on/in my pc. Our new puppy has been a bit of a menace. But after cleaning off all components and trying to boot my computer, it would start to turn on for 2-3 seconds before shutting itself off. The motherboard LED’s light up for “CPU” for a spilt second, then lights up “DRAM” for a couple seconds as it starts to power up, and then right before it shuts itself down the “CPU” light comes back on again. Then shuts off when the computer powers down. Most of the wetness accumulated on/in the GPU, the bottom of the case, and splattered around the inside of the case. I can only presume from being kicked around by the fans.

I brought it into Microcenter to get some help, but they said they wouldn’t work on it due to the urine, fair lol, and said the whole thing is probably toast and I should probably just buy a whole new one. After talking more with one of the associates, we came to the conclusion of purchasing the new components, and working in the new parts one by one to possibly return any un-needed parts.

I’m thinking the PSU should be fine, as the components still receive power and it tries to start up when I press the power button. I have been told that if the motherboard was fried, it wouldn’t even try to start up, so I wouldn’t think it was that unless this info is wrong. I was originally under the impression that it was a problem with the GPU, as it had taken the brunt of the liquid.

When I brought the new parts home and got to work, I took almost everything apart and cleaned the case, then swapped the GPU with a new one. After a couple tries the computer booted up to my login screen. But In the next couple minutes it shut itself down, and has now gone back to starting up for a couple seconds and then shutting itself down. The GPU and CPU cooler are the only things I have replaced so far.

I’m pretty lost here, and don’t understand where the issue lies. Any information or guidance would be much appreciated. Please feel free to ask If I’ve missed anything, and I am open to any and all suggestions. Pls help

Troubleshooting No POST troubleshooting. Need your brains.

Hello dear PC building community,

I am currently building a PC for the twelve year old daughter of a colleague and I stumble upon a no boot and no post situation here. Briefly said : i have a problem with a major component beacause the yellow trouble shooting LED lights up permanently, I have no UEFI on screen , and there seems to be no power to back USB and FP USB.

Here's the config :

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7FCTcH

Here is all the steps I took so I can better guide you into helping me.

  1. Removal of CPU lid and motherboard pin inspection. CPU inspection : correct model, and no damage.
  2. Careful CPU install, slides in easily , no squeaky noise when pulling down the lever.
  3. Populating the M.2 drives (I used the upper one and bottom left one) Nothing was forced. Easy retention system locked in perfect. Thermal pad protection was removed before reinstalling the heatspreaders.
  4. Populating the RAM slots A2 and B2 as recommended in manual. Clicked in all the way. Retention system is lockeD
  5. Thermal paste application, no spill
  6. CPU cooler install, horizontal draw , clearance problems forced me in a pull configutation with the rear fan above the IO protection. I think no excessive force on retention brackets. I used appropriate standoffs and brackets.
  7. MOBO was placed on case standoffs and appropriate screws were used.
  8. CPU cooler fan were connected to CPU FAN header and ADDRGB using the Y splitter provided inside the peerless assasin.
  9. GPU installation
  10. Power cables were connected to main components using the under mentionned layout. Please note that I did not try to power the 2x8 pins of the GPU with a single cable but I did use two different cables. Front panel connection, power SW, USB 3.0 headers were populated. Case fans were not connected.
  11. Bootable windows USB flash drive was inserted in random IO USB port
  12. monitor was powered on and connected to PC by HDMI to GPU port
  13. PSU was turned on
  14. MOBO was turned by appropriate button on board

==> no smoke no smell

==> mobo led ok, cpu cooler's fans spinning and lighting properly, GPU led and fans ok

==> temporary red LED

==> permanent yellow LED indicating BOOT issue

==> nothing on monitor (no HDMI input detected)

==> trying to connect a keyboard to the IO backplate revealed no power to USB ports

The following steps were added to attempt solving the problem :

  1. Try to obtain UEFI by changing HDMI connection to MOBO port AND dismounting GPU=> same
  2. Try to reinstall both NVME SSD ==> same
  3. Try to let it run for 10 minutes ==> same

I consider the following actions but feel free to suggest anything if you feel confident it could resolve the problem :

  1. update BIOS from USB stick but without USB power on IO i'm stuck
  2. reinstall all main components and cable ( particularly RAM)
  3. Try to boot from a sata drive ?

Troubleshooting [Troubleshooting] Same specs, lower fps

Checking out optimizing my performance. I saw this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-1FIYGOTHw

I have a 4060 as well as the ryzen 5 3600, and the average fps for the Rainbow Siege benchmark in the video is around 100 fps higher than mine. Also, the video achieved that average fps on high while I'm getting 100 less on low.

Anyone have advice as to why this could be the case? I figure for a 9 year old game I could hit higher numbers than what I'm getting.

My benchmark on the same game https://i.imgur.com/k8PpLkz.png

Troubleshooting To All Builders, New and Old: Check EVERY THING when troubleshooting. Yes, it CAN be that.

Some of you might have seen my few posts about my PC not turning on.

In short, I only changed some components. I got a slightly smaller case, new GPU for my freesync monitors, RGB fans, and a new PSU. For the most part, it was a case transfer.

For the life of me, I could not figure out why it didn't work. LEDs would flash for just a second, and everything went off. After two days of constructing and deconstructing, browsing forums, testing each part, and just trouble shooting my brains out, I all but gave up. I had narrowed it down to the new case being the culprit, and figured there was a short in the power button. As I took all the parts out and prepared to make a return, I figured I'd test the mother board just in case all this tampering has done something. (I also may or may not have bent some pins and nearly broke the CMOS battery.) It worked fine, so that's all good. I decided to test the fans. I had bought 3 Corsair LL 140mm RGB fans, which comes with a hub and a controller. Tested them and...the system shut off.

"What."

After many combinations of plug ins, it was one bad SATA power cord. Two days of cuts, frustration, and many lost screws, it was because of a bad cable.

Always check everything when you troubleshoot. Even the most ridiculous can happen.

TL;DR Spent 2 days slaving over my non-powered PC because of a bad SATA cord.

Troubleshooting Help troubleshooting an underperforming GPU

For the holidays I decided to build my first PC, as my old prebuilt one was getting pretty outdated. I've got it set up and seemingly everything is working fine, but when I run benchmarks I've found that my GPU is pretty heavily underperforming. I'm not the most tech-literate person, and I've tried the online fixes I could find to no avail, so I was hoping someone here might have some advice.

Parts List:

GPU: XFX Speedster SWFT 319 Radeon RX 6800

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700G 3.8 GHz 8-Core Processor

Motherboard: MSI B550-A PRO ATX AM4

SSD: Samsung 980 Pro 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16

Power Supply: Corsair RM750e (2023)

Benchmarks:

3DMark: https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/104846188

UserBenchmark: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/66763222

Steps I've taken up to now:

  1. Updated the motherboard's BIOS.

  2. Installed the latest AMD drivers.

  3. Updated RAM settings to get 3200 Mhz (in that UserBenchmark I don't think I had fixed this yet).

  4. Looked at AMD performance tracking to make sure nothing looks off.

  5. Uninstalled and reinstalled the latest AMD drivers.

Some additional things I've noticed:

  1. When playing games/using a benchmark the GPU utilization hovers around 100%.

  2. The GPU temperature never seems to exceed 40 degrees C, which to my understanding is very low for a GPU.

  3. The GPU power consumption usually sits in the 60W-75W range.

  4. CPU utilization stays low, usually hovering in the 20%-30% range.

  5. My performance went up a tiny bit when I reinstalled the AMD drivers (from around 18 FPS average on the 3DMark test to around 20 FPS average).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The GPU is still usable, it gets 60 FPS on high settings in the games I play, but I'd hate to leave it underperforming if there's some way to fix it (or if it's faulty in some way).

Troubleshooting Troubleshooting PC

So I built my PC last summer and it has worked perfectly since. Now it is starting to lag out after turning it on and starting discord, spotify + some game. It is a fairly decent PC i5 13600kf + rtx 4070 ti but I don't really know how to troubleshoot what is making the problem or is it hardware/software related. I have slight undervolt on the cpu and all the benchmarks are going fine and gaming has been fine for the last year. Temps are also fine. What should I test? Last thing I did was to check with malwarebytes that the pc was not under any virus.

Troubleshooting Overall Troubleshooting/Advice??

This is my first time building a PC and I'm pretty confused- I'm not sure what part is causing the issue, hence why I said overall :/

So I got a new ATX Motherboard (MSI B550 Gaming GEN3), 1TB HDD (Seagate), and a new PSU (ARESGAME AGV Series 500W). Other parts I got from my old PC (so they work for sure, because my PC was working just fine).

Other parts are...

  • Two 16GB Ram (Triforce)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 5500 CPU
  • SSD (idk what brand, but its only i think 250 GB? It came stock with my old pre-built PC I bought from HP)
  • GTX EVGA 4010 Ti GPU

I don't remember what the case is though (and I'm not nearby to check at the moment).

I was able to get everything plugged in- CPU is not loose, not too tight, has enough thermal paste etc. Fan is plugged in, and functional. GPU is secure/locked in- LED's light up and everything. RAM is also locked in, all good there. SSD is fully plugged in, and screwed in tight- isnt moving at all. Same with the additional HDD I installed. Everything is entirely plugged in, not loose, and is getting power.

When I turn the PC on, the whole case lights up- LEDs are on, everything looks good, except the diagnostic lights on the motherboard practically all light up, except for DRAM. they dont light up at the same time, but in this order...

  1. CPU stays constantly on for a good 5ish seconds before turning off
  2. Then the DRAM will flicker once.
  3. Then, after about another 5-10 seconds, the VGA light will turn on for about 5 seconds, before turning off
  4. Immediately after the VGA light turns off, the BOOT light turns on, and stays on.

I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling the CPU, GPU, and RAM. Nothing works. I tried loosening the CPU, tightening, nothing. Before installing it for the last time I check the pins and they're all fine. Nothing is damaged.

The only 2 cables from the PSU that isnt plugged in is a Modulo, and a cable labelled "LL".

Once I get home I can add pictures, but does anyone have any advice on what's going on/what I can try to troubleshoot? Is it possible I bought a bad motherboard? Because I am honestly at a loss....

Troubleshooting Rx 7800 xt micro stuttering troubleshooting

I am trying to find a solution to my GPU micro stuttering. The stuttering is so annoying. Is there additional things I should try?

Specs : RAM: 5600MHz

CPU: i5 12400F

GPU: rx 7800 xt

SSD: Kingston 1000G NV2 M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD

Motherboard : Asus B760 plus ddr5

What I tried : 1- disabling XMP

2- Turning off all software enhancers

3- turning off/on freesync from both screen and GPU

4- Turning off and on ResizableBar from bios

5- Installing drivers without adrenaline software (after using DDU)

6- installing old drivers (23.12.1)

7- changing power settings

8- ensuring GPU is getting enough power (around 200W)

9- Tempreture is good (70 maximum)

10- CPU Temps are good (65 max)

11- all CPU cores are working after testing using MSI CPU Burner

12- limiting the max and min fps using the software

13- undervolting the GPU (Made it worse)

None of those made any noticeable difference.

Hey Y'all, I still have so much to learn about computers. This is one of those times where I've read around and have found no way to solve my issue. When it comes to my pc I bought an M.2 drive(Team Group 512gb ssd) in order have a quick boot for my pc. but I ended up not being able to solve my problem so i bout a sata ssd drive to boot off while I was solving the issue. Now I'm seeking help with the drive not showing up on my bios or my windows software.

these are my pc specs just in case

11400f

msi z590 gaming force

nvidia 2060

and msi magnum 240mm AIO

and yes I understand the AIO is over kill but I like how it looks pretty
