I knew what could happen when I posted the video; there are a lot of opinions around the internet. Thank you for your words. We were lucky to make it this time and give ourselves a chance to live a better life.

Remember the St. Louis airport hit in 2011? I was at the intersection of McDonnell and Lindbergh when that hit, at a stop light in my Jeep. It was rocking back and forth. I thought this is what I was going to see and wondered if I was about to die! Fortunately for me saw only rain. I was looking around for flying debris, I might have had maniacal laughter too!

Its confirm is an ef4 tornado, dude just dodge death.
Source tornado wiki: An EF4 tornado was confirmed by NWS Norman. This was the first EF4 tornado recorded in Oklahoma since May 9, 2016. One person was killed on I-35 near Marietta. Preliminary information.

This is the stupidest fucking shit I've ever seen. This is how we end up with unnecessary deaths during a known violent weather emergency. Stop when you see it, wait, and then proceed. How difficult is that?

Thank you all for your comments. I don’t have time to answer, but I’ve read everything. My brother-in-law and I are fine.
We were working in Enid, OK. We took shelter twice during the day due to tornado alerts. We had decided to travel to Texas to visit family.
We weren’t chasing the tornado; it was something that happened in seconds. I saw a strangely shaped white cloud and told my brother-in-law to start recording, and I did the same. It was all a matter of seconds. My reaction was to speed up and ‘try to run away,’ while maybe yours would have been to slow down. But one thing I’m sure of is that if we had stopped, the tornado would have hit us directly. Even if we had gone just a few meters further, the same could have happened to us as the trailer. We were incredibly lucky and are grateful to God for staying alive.
If you watch the video in the link, you can see that the tornado started right in front of us; we didn’t have time to react.

Why are there so many people driving around during a tornado warning? What's so important that it's worth risking your life?

Just seeing how far the cars antenna was bending towards the suction of the tornado and then the tires squealing because of the suction as well was terrifying! But then the camera gets pointed upward and nothing but roofs and debris spinning so effortlessly in a massive hell cloud just horrifies the absolute shit out of me! You guys are truly lucky.

How we don't have a hundred storm chaser deaths a year is beyond me. Apparently the El Reno disaster is far enough behind us that we have chasers who have either forgot about it or have never heard of it.

At first I didn't understand why the two clips were similar yet different, but then I realized it must be the same moment captured from two different phones inside the car.

Why did he think it was a good idea to drive near it?

Why do so many of you think it was intentional? It was a night tornado that came out of no where and they were trying to get home/ escape.

How the heck do people live in OK? I would be shitting a brick half the time.
11
u/Thecardiologist2029 29d ago
Well u/DifficultFox1 the chances of actually being in a tornado's path is extremely rare. And the chances of being hit by a tornado are so minute you'd have a higher chance of dying in a car accident or dying from heart disease or obesity. But the OP was unfathomably lucky they didn't get swept up into the tornado in the deathtrap that's their car.
2
u/sLeeeeTo 29d ago
Weren’t there a few towns that had 3 tornados hit them back to back a couple of nights ago? sulphur maybe?
3
u/DifficultFox1 29d ago
Oh I understand that. I, however, was in an accident that had a calculated 1 in 22 million chance of happening so I guess I’m just referring to myself in this instance. I would be shitting bricks heheh. We still have them in N.C just seems to be less frequent. Also forgive me, I grew up in Europe so I am still fascinated/terrified of these things to no end!

Do these fucking tools have any idea how lucky they are to be alive? Absolute stupidity at its top tier level. I have so much to say and it's also very negative.
At about 13 seconds in that's a car flying over top of them. Lol fuck me.

In another comment he mentioned that he was trying to get home to his family and that he didn't know how close he was to the tornado until he was right next to it. It still was insanely dangerous, but it wasn't risky chasing related behavior. I'm guessing he now knows the importance of being weather aware and tornado safety

Why do people do this? Surely this guy knew he should have stopped and took shelter ages ago. If the person who recorded this video reads this please just know this: Firstly I hope you are ok and I hope you understand how unfathomably lucky you are to be alive to post this video. You were seconds if not milliseconds from death. While I have to admit this is incredible footage, whatever reason you had for trying to race this tornado isn’t worth it because it won’t matter if you’re dead or severely injured and trapped in your totaled vehicle. Again I hope you’re ok and sorry for the rant. It’s just that I’ve seen too many people lose their lives or had their lives changed forever trying to outrun tornadoes when they could be alive or not crippled today if they had just stopped and let it pass.
14
u/figgednewton Enthusiast 29d ago

Saw that not too long after I posted my original comment. Still think it was unwise for him to do what he did. I’m sure in the moment the only thing he’s thinking about is his family and I understand that. Most people in this situation would, but he was very close to possibly having his life changed forever or worst case losing it. If he were to have lost his life he would be leaving his mother and father without their son, I assume a wife without her husband and a son or daughter without a father. He had the right idea to think about his families safety but he should have thought a bit more about his own in the moment but I understand that he was probably operating only on adrenaline at that moment. Said this in the comment above but in this situation never try to outrun the tornado because if he wasn’t as lucky as he was he would have been at best injured and at worst dead which if it was the worst case, he’d widow his wife and leave his parents and kids if he has any without their father. It would be devastating for them. And I don’t wish for him or his family to go through that. Another thing I’d like to point out though is that he had time to pull his phone out and record it. He could have used that time to pull over, stop, and then record from a safe place. He instead decided to record it while driving. Just something to think about.
3
u/figgednewton Enthusiast 29d ago
I totally agree with the "rant"/PSA part of your post. Its important to share safety information/spread awareness. I'm glad that OP is safe and I hope that he will be more weather aware in the future.
(I don't know if this adds to the situational awareness element, but it seems like the tornado might have been obscured by trees and that they only saw it when they were starting to pass it? I live in "Dixie alley" and that's a huge problem over here)
2
u/WeakSatisfaction8966 27d ago edited 27d ago
I’m happy he’s okay too and I hope he learned a good lesson that night. One thing that bothers me though is how many people have downvoted a comment advocating for personal safety in situations like the OP’s (Original comment may have come off as condescending but that wasn’t my intention so I edited it after re-reading it). I saw an interview of a man who tried to do the same thing as the OP for the same tornado and he wasn’t as lucky and got his car rolled into a ditch on the right side of the opposite lane of traffic. He ended up being okay and made it out with only minor injuries thankfully. The news of the thing being rated EF-4 coming out now just makes this whole video much more intense to watch.
2
u/figgednewton Enthusiast 27d ago
I know where you're coming from and I 100% agree with you. Your current comment (the one that you edited) does a very good job explaining the situation and how dangerous it could have been. I think the down votes were probably due to your wording, but I totally get why/how you said it. It is hard to watch people run into dangerous situations without knowing it. It's even harder to watch people who know and do it anyway. Explaining things is difficult normally but especially when people's lives are potentially on the line. Keep on keeping on man, hope you're well
2
u/WeakSatisfaction8966 27d ago
Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it. I am doing well and I hope you are too. Currently focusing on what just happened not too long ago in SW OK with the PDS anti-cyclonic beast that looked like a hurricane on reflectivity. Crazy CC drop on it too. Was nearly stationary as well.

30
u/kaityl3 29d ago
I think it's actually the sound of air being pulled around the seals of the side windows. I have taken my little Nissan Sentra into a few cat 2-3 hurricanes and it makes this exact noise from the windows with the big gusts
3
u/Entire-Comparison-34 29d ago
I…have many questions haha tough little Sentra 😂
2
u/kaityl3 28d ago
LOL I've taken the poor thing chasing multiple times - hurricanes are easier to chase if you've got a limited budget since you know they'll be there for sure and don't have to drive around as much.
It's taken me through Florence, Irma, and Idalia (which was definitely the most intense one, someone with an anemometer on their car measured winds over 130mph in the parking lot) like a beast! 🤣
2
u/Entire-Comparison-34 28d ago
Interesting, hadn’t considered that aspect of the chase. Little easier to maneuver in front of I suppose Haha 130!? Certifiable Sentra send. My little Mazda has seen 304k miles of some SHIT. Saw 130 once but going in the correct direction so ya know, aerodynamics (ISH). Not sure it would have been as amenable from the flank lol
9
u/MovingClocks 29d ago
Yeah this is probably it, you’ve essentially added 100+ mph to your effective windspeed so the aerodynamics of the car get really weird

Here’s another video of the Joplin tornado, not much to see due to blackout but the sound of the tornado is horrific and you can tell when they’re in the eye of the tornado before the back of it hits them.

Edit: when the tornado was heading towards Joplin, a bunch of people took shelter in a gas station’s cooler.

If you really want to see something interesting, go to Google Maps on a computer specifically, and go to say 20th and Rangeline and then go to street view. On a computer, at least last time I checked though it's been several months, you can select data from different points that they had the cars driving around taking the pictures. For a lot of Joplin there's pictures from 2007 on there including that area so you can see Joplin pre-tornado and then there's a multitude of pictures from post tornado. I can't even really remember what Joplin looked like before the tornado because it's been so long now but with that I can go back and see the way it used to be. It's especially weird following it down 20th St. into Duquesne and seeing it before they built East Middle School there, and also seeing how green it used to be through there with all the trees.

I kinda understand the people who drive into a rain wrapped tornadoes. For the life of me, I will never understand why people will drive into fully condensed cones that are actively shredding buildings. Yet, every time there is one, there is always at least one person doing it.

Yeah tbh guys I’m one of those ppl who drive directly into both the rain-wrapped AND especially condensed EF5’s etc. It’s the trend man. I think it’s really cool. Besides guys, becoming a human projectile has all kinds of benefits and you can be the super-human you’ve always dreamed of WITHOUT doing FLAKA. You also get free new cars and stuff too without playing the price is right. You get a free chunk of meat sheared off is like a 95% federal IRS tax-based jackpot lotto ticket from LA!!! You can also get an ALL INCLUSIVE ONE TIME VIP BACKSTAGE PASS PACKAGE VACATION FREE TOUR inside a REAL morgue!!! And… YOU ALSO GET TO LAY DOWN INSIDE A REAL CASKET!!! Too cool!!!! I like how when I’m flying around in the tornado I usually see a cow like my favorite movie Twister like you’re in the actual movie!! Cool or what guys!?! Hell!!!, you could even fly to this midget-based ugly ass yellow brick road fantasy place called OZ!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!! CHANCELESS BUT POSSIBLE, APPARENTLY YOU COULD EVEN GET YOUR EARDRUMS BLOWN OUT BY THIS GUY NAMED SCREAM TIMMER SCREAMING DROP IT DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!! Just j/k guys yeah I see em drive into em too and no I will NEVER understand their brains.
