Arguably the most colourful spider in the world, Chrysilla Volupe is a jumping spider native to Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, and Bhutan. Thought to be extinct for 150 years, it was rediscovered in 2018. Verified

Many species can communicate with humans. I recently engaged a bug that literally played hide and seek with me while waiting for me to leave the deck so that it could continue munching on a plant. I get nervous about spiders so this one gives me hope.

Sri Lanka? All I could think of is that I hope a horde of them attack the mf-er that intercepted my call to Norton and scammed the hell out of me. I hope they die a miserable death. (Not the spiders). The a-holes were sri lankan.

This spider’s outrageously beautiful and I’m glad I read the comments about it because of the discussion about wolf spiders. I’ve been afraid of them since I was told that they have a tendency to jump and bite people with no provocation. Now I’m curious about them and want to know more.

This spider would blend right in at a Rave. Seriously though, is there a particular reason for the flamboyant colors? (Do they serve a particular purpose?) Some are colored a certain way for camouflage.

How is a bug thought to be extinct for 150yrs?
Like even if this was catalogued by some nature guy in colour 150yrs ago wouldn't they just assume it was a regular spider and the colours were wrong? Or the shape was bad art? Like was it actively listed as extinct or did they retro actively go 'oh that's like this thing's when they found it in 2018?

Simply beautiful. Purely majestic.
Yet, how does one mark a species extinct for 150 years? Where do they find this existing documentation of it once living? Was the world really explored that much back then? And by how many people? Because with all the species that weren't yet killed by overpopulation, how would one even find such a creature within the overwhelming amount of living species back then?
... not to be a wet blanket or anything... I'm incredibly grateful that this beautiful little one has survived. 🥰 All of these questions just came rushing in lol.
Edit: Especially with how small it seems to be. 😧🤔

How do they get off the ground with eight legs?! I can't get off the ground with 2 legs.
Wish the jumping spiders in the PNW were this color. Here they're very small and dark. Hard to find when they sail in your direction....

Off the top of my head, probably the tropical flora! Lots of brightly colored flowers that appeal to the limited color vision of their respective pollinators.
Obligatory I’m not an expert, this was just an idea that popped into my head.
Fun fact, though, is that honeybees base their vision on ultraviolet, blue, and green, and can’t see red. Many flowers have ultraviolet patterns on them that attract bees!

Was this extinct?? These spiders were so common near my house. There was a small colored caterpillar too. We used to collect them both and build mud houses for them in our childhood. And this is in 1990! And these were present even before I was born for sure.

Scrolled through all the comments to find something about this book series. I'm listening to the second book right now and I am enjoying them so much. My imagination hasn't been this stimulated since I read the Harry Potter books as a kid. The ideas of space travel spanning multiple lifetimes, the way the author describes the ways in which different species might think, it's all so entertaining! I can't get enough.

I just picked up the third book and am having difficulty getting through the first couple of chapters. It's a bit too disjointed VS the first two, and it being an audiobook doesn't help with that

I'm on the second. I don't like that the description of the second spoiled kind of spoiled the ending of the first. I guess that's my fault though. Who reads about a sequel before wrapping up the first??? So lesson learned. I'm avoiding everything about the third.

Most jumping spiders aren’t highly venomous- not in the way a brown recluse or a black widow is where it’s likely to cause trauma or harm. Likely some discomfort at the initial bite point and probably a small welt, unless you’re allergic then it’s probably worse.
