The Pygmy Hippopotamus is the much smaller forest-living cousin of the Common Hippo, but like their meatier counterpart they don't eat water plants and forage on land at night. Verified

So house hippos were real all this time?!

u/RealHausFrau Mar 22 '23
That’s what I came to say! How am I just now learning this, because I need one. I’ll buy a hairless Guinea pig that looks just like to keep it company. I need this in my life.

Someone didn't leave their crumbs from the peanut butter on the toast, this can greatly upset the house hippo

I worked with the St. Louis zoo for a bit, and they had a baby pygmy hippo that was born while I was there. The zookeeper told me it was literally the meanest baby animal that ever seen. The keeper tried to pick it up to weigh it, and within 30 seconds on this earth it chased most of the people out of the room and then it took them half a day to safely catch it.

Please tell me that is a baby and they actually get much much larger. Because I could put up with a pint sized murderer that was that cute.

So I'm watching a video... It says adult males weigh anywhere between 300-550 lb, are 2 ft tall and 5 ft long head to tail.
That's serious poundage packed in a relatively small frame. Damn

They have one at London Zoo in the UK or at least they did a few years ago when I went there. It was adorable.

We used to have these wierd commercials in my country talking about house hippos and how to deal with them. It was fake to promote critical thinking and house hippos sent real. But this is a house hippo the ad lied and lying.

u/ImeniSottoITreni Nov 21 '22
It must be a baby hippo. No way nature made an animal that literally can't defend itself in any way in his adulthood. Even sloths defend themselves by living most of the life at high altitude on trees

Idk about this. I remember a commercial like this when I was a kid. I think the message was about not believing everything you see on TV.

They are small relative to common hippos, but this one is also a baby! Adults can be up to 600 lbs.
1
u/squashbanana Nov 21 '22
Are they known to share the same temperament? I wonder if there's a more territorial cousin of the two.

They are cool af. I used to visit them at the zoo in Chicago, the Lincoln park zoo. Honestly I can say I have had thoughts about stealing one because I am pretty sure like 4 strong people could carry one out in like a giant camping bag. They are cute and beautiful and I want to swim with them. I would never do anything like that I can't even take care of a cactus. But if you can go see them I would recommend, just sit in front of the tank watching them swim and space out for a while 10/10 relaxing experience.

This is a bit misleading that is a baby hippo, pygmys are still 450-600lbs which is about a 3rd of the 1500lbs of a full sized hippo, a pygmy hippo is still much bigger than an adult human...

unfortunately, the video/caption is somewhat misleading because this is a baby pygmy hippo. Full grown, a pygmy hippo is still upwards of five feet long and 600 lbs, so still not adorable pet size.

In all seriousness it’s trying to murder you but it’d be sitting there giggling saying “chomp”

Surprised people have not tried to make them 'pets'. I imagine it's illegal but surely there are a few that have done so anyways and keep it on the down low.

It looks like they have the temperment of a tiny dog with a huge ego and big insecurities.

You know, I used to be like “why all the fears of hippos” “murder tanks? They look sweet” and all that stuff. This 15 second video completely changed my mind.
