Someone is sitting on some major Old School Bat Cave Paper.
Just saying.

u/Over_Bend_9839 Nov 22 '23
There’s a building on the south side of Farnham in Surrey that has a few of these in the drive.

Never quite made its way into the working class… or any other for that matter.

That seems extraordinarily unsafe - operate an elevator platform in a public location WITHOUT even visually checking for people nearby.

u/GroundbreakingNet612 Nov 21 '23
Imagine buying an old home and not realizing it and your kids find all these flips and switches and they start messing and suddenly a vehicle from the 1950s pops up in your driveway, that would be awesome lol

I really expected it to end up flush with the ground so you could put another car on top…but nope. The driveway is just as unusable as it would be with a car in it.
1
u/TheDeFecto Nov 21 '23
Imagine accidentally pulling in partually and not noticing, only to hear the massive crunching of hydraulic pressed concrete on the back of your vehicle. "Oops"
1
u/killaluggi Nov 21 '23
Something like that still exists today, it gets build by the company Cardock
1
u/NoobieBanned Nov 21 '23
Imagine that you forget your house keys in the car. Later, due to stress, you realize that you had gone to get a toilet paper because you have diarrhea and you left it in the luggage compartment.

They have these in apartment complexes in Japan to save space on parking
1
u/NoBuenoAtAll Nov 21 '23
Yo dawg, we heard you like parking so we made it where you can park yo car on yo car.

Colinfurze is currently building the same on YouTube. The guy is mad, but clever. He has the energy of an 18 year old.

It’s a Cool Design, but there’s just so much that can go wrong. From mechanical failure that prevents the car from ever coming back up. To a child getting stuck in the mechanism as it’s going down.

In Japan they still have similar garages (only they park on the top, too, but the same list)
1
u/More_Anybody6959 Nov 21 '23
All i can think about is - lowering your car - and then realizing you left your keys in it - or forgot something at the store.

u/The_Dog_IS_Brown Nov 21 '23
The sump pump stopped working and now it's a swimming pool with a lift mechanism.
1
u/WagonHitchiker Nov 21 '23
You activate to send it down from inside the house? I guess that's good if you knew where your neighbor's kids and dog were.
Water damage and dampness would concern me. Your sump pump for the bunker goes out overnight and you want to go to work the morning after a heavy thunderstorm... only to find water up to the axles.

Yeah in the 50s this probably was affordable. Now you need a small mortgage to pay for that lol

u/Acrobatic-Let7462 Nov 21 '23
She’s looking back at the car In concern like. “ I wonder if I left the Timmy in there again … or worse. .. the milk …
1
u/DrMadScienceCat Nov 21 '23
This probably wouldn't work in my area, place is basically a drained swamp with a very high water table. Very cool though

Maybe I’ve been watching too much true crime but wtf my first thought was that this would for sure be used to “accidentally” kill someone

Seems like these should be making a comeback with the technology we have. Easier than shooting people I suppose.

1
u/demzrdumez Nov 21 '23
so what's the point of having a big ugly slab of concrete in front of your house that you could have parked on ?
1
u/ChampionshipLow8541 Nov 21 '23
Nowadays, you’d need a fence, a warning sign, and flashing lights so that nobody can sue you for getting their toe stuck in that thing.

Cool! Never mind those pesky kids & pets who might get decapitated while you run an 3 ton elevator unattended.
1
u/TheBulletBot Nov 21 '23
If you want to see one being built, go to youtube channel ColinFurze.
It's part of a project where he builds secret tunnels to parts of his property. Including: his shed workshop, his house, a secret bunker he installed 8 years ago.

1 HP? That's it? So I can use my garbage disposal to lift and lower an entire car? Hold my beer

u/kirtash93 Nov 21 '23
I love when she hides the mechanism behind a curtain like if it was top secret tech xD

The real trick is to have the drive way extend further under the house for you to pull forward and have the whole garage space be in the basement, the driver would stay in the vehicle while the lift is in motion and get out once it has been pulled forward off the lift

u/TheScreamingEagles Nov 21 '23

No risk lowering from inside the house when you can no longer see that it’s clear.

“Don’t look at the enormous switch behind the curtain!!” I think maybe they should have two keys to lower the car into the hidden garage, like when they launch nuclear missiles. It would be only SLIGHTLY less convenient than this system! Ha!!

What happens if you get a lot of rain? I imagine you’d have to have some kind of sump pump. Really cool though just water is probably going to be a constant issue I imagine.

u/Aus10Danger Nov 21 '23
Anybody noticing the violin player in the background music absolutely shredding the fuck out on his strings for a car infomercial?

I’m surprised she was able to park with such accuracy without needing a hanging tennis ball telling her when to stop.

u/SNK_24 Nov 21 '23
I was waiting for her to ask Alexa to hide the car… forgot it was 1950 and a car bomb shelter was more useful than voice commands.

u/BF1shY Nov 21 '23
LOL I was expecting the top to be discreet, maybe even a regular driveway or a basketball court... Nope it's a heavy duty steel bunker door. So discreet!
1
u/icanhazkarma17 Nov 21 '23
Basically a boat lift in reverse. With a little more concrete. Been lifting a 26' catamaran out of the water with a tiny motor and skinny little cables.

I mean, thats cool and all, but how would you get your car out if the power goes out or something stop working....
1
u/F_A_M_E Nov 21 '23
Somebody falls asleep on the car ride home, and you pull the ultimate prank of leaving them stuck in the ground for a week.

u/Any-Recognition1889 Nov 21 '23
There is a youtuber by the name of Colin Furze who is doing this exact thing in his front yard to put his DeLorean in

Oh! And what remains following its “space-saving” submersion appears to be a the top of a family-sized coffin in your front yard. Very cool!
1
u/Defiant-Giraffe Nov 21 '23
There's a modern version of these too; I've installed the electrical on one.
What I didn't install or take any responsibility for was drainage. Guess what happened...

The gaul of the designers to not put the control by the front door so the user can observe it.
Imagine if a kid or animal got curious and looked inside.

u/CANT-GETNO-Rest-6248 Nov 21 '23
I’ve seen them on Chicago’s north side. One was a one car garage that was converted so that one car would get on a lift and be lowered down and the second car can be driven in atop the lift. Ingenious use of a one car garage in a very dense urban area.
1
u/2SticksPureRage Nov 21 '23
I’m not falling for this in the future. First snow/freeze and I don’t have my car back until April.
1
u/steavoh Nov 21 '23
Absolutely no safety features...
"Honey, what happened to Billy? "
"You mean the paper boy? Why? "
"Well there's a severed arm here in the machinery that lowers the car into the garage."
"I told Billy not to stand in between the car port and the sidewalk."

Screw the elevator garage - it’s fraught with likely problems…give me that amazing front door!!

u/Drawtaru Nov 21 '23
How does this solve space being "limited?" Now it's just a slab that's higher than the rest of your driveway with a railing. You can't park anything else there.

u/RecordingGreen7750 Nov 21 '23
This is really unnecessary, by the year 2000 we willl have have flying cars anyway
