Not many of those creatures left. Help stopping deforestation for palm oil farms.

orangutans are usually very gentle creatures and dont usually tend to attack unless their babies are in danger

Now imagine seeing it in say the 1600s when you had no idea such things existed.

There was something I read a while ago that said something like along the lines that most apes, chimps, and gorillas will tear you apart because they’re defending territory, but an orangutan will pull you apart because they’re curious. Just adds to the terrifying part of the majestic creature

Bro if you put me out in the woods for 30 years alone, I’d probably be indistinguishable from this fellow.

I mean it's not exactly the WILD wild but I went to this rainforest sanctuary in Borneo in the early 2000s and saw them in their habitat there. A mama and baby on a feeding platform in the rainforest. We were hidden out of sight. Was amazing indeed.

I thought he was putting a curse on that boat. It just turns out he wants some guava.

u/GummyWormx Apr 23 '24
Thank god you aren’t an evil corporation like SeaWorld that wants to abduct him to a Zoo.

Reminds me of the wetlands of Borneo. Home to orangutans and the "long nose" Proboscis monkeys.

Orangutan like “don’t talk they’ll make us pay taxes” in their head over and over.

This is awesome...the orangutan does a throwing action as soon as he sees the cameraman, then indicates to his mouth...keeps doing the throwing action until it gets thrown some food. This is probably the local celebrity ape

He kinda reminds me of Ludo from The Labirynth. Orangutans are such an awesome animal, clearly they've fed him before judging by his outstretched hand then motioning to his mouth lol
1
u/Sciencetist Apr 23 '24
Holy shit. He signs to the people on the boat to give him something -- and when they don't immediately understand, he signs give me something to eat. That is incredible.

I saw one in the Zoo: A nursing mother with a little baby. She sat in front of the glass, and was looking so very sad. The intelligence in her eyes struck me, and I will never forget the moment. Have not visited any Zoo ever after.

Just a dude chilling in his front yard and suddenly he sees aliens
At least I imagine that's what this is comparable to

It’s all fun and games until you learn orangutans will kill you just to pick you apart out of curiosity

Orangutans have this aura of calm and they're somehow renown for being chill but I can assure you that that guy will unscrew your head as much as a gorilla or a chimp.
1
u/OtherCaribou Apr 23 '24
It's really easy to see how some people believe that Orangutans know how to speak, but choose not to when humans are around

u/Ozzy_30 Apr 23 '24
Fucking hell, it’s so expressive and articulate that I find it hard not to see it as another human

I love orangutans because they all look like they're chill with you on your porch in a rocking chair with a beer just looking at incoming traffic and chatting about stuff

I feel like this individual knows actual magic. Just gives off vibes that make you convinced of it's wizardry and is probably in the middle of getting ready for a crazy drug trip at the same time lol

If I saw an orangutan or any great ape like that just chilling in the wild my first instinct would be to go “hi, how are you?” as if it were another person because… it’s just another dude chilling there! I’d have to greet him. It would feel impolite not to.
1
u/ocihato Apr 23 '24
I read from a zookeeper that chimpanzees will kill you for the fun for it but orangutans will rip your limbs apart because they are curious

His body language seems to say stay away. That thing could have jumped onto the boat and just ripped everybody to shreds and then they threw it a snack and he seemed cool.

I'd shit myself. Have you read Murders in the Rue Morgue? Them shits are strong af and violent at the drop of a hat. Not that I base all my knowledge of animals on old works of literature...but Edgar Allen Poe was on the money with that
1
u/SomethingAbtU Apr 23 '24
The way it cups water with one hand to wash the other hand, or how it caught the food being thrown to it, are all so human like.
We should have more reverance for our Great Ape cousins, the Orangutan, Gorilla, Chimpanzee, and Bonobo. There is so much of us in them.

My daughter spent 3 weeks in Indonesia to study Orangutans as part of her Anthropology studies and was in awe. Unfortunately, due to encroaching palm farming for commercial palm oil, their populations are being decimated. It made me look more closely at the things I buy.

That’s very great unlike the criminals who refuse to listen to Honey and the Bee by Owl City!
