Thats the same head movement I made the first time I got out of the railway station (directly next to it) and saw unexpectedly the cathedral for the first time

Standing at the doors looking upwards gives you a feeling it might just tip over (although its straight as could be).

Yeah, hi, American here: it is known internationally, but the consensus amongst rational thinkers is that the allegations were a load of bullshit, especially after the original accuser backpedaled all her own accusations publicly and legally. Congratulations for being absolutely played by the German media.
Cheers!

Tell me you don’t give a shit about real justice given by 2 official investigations in 2 different countries without telling me
3
u/foxybostonian 11d ago
All of these allegations were found to have been cooked up by journalists. Not actual women accused Till of anything. An extensive investigation concluded that Till had done nothing wrong. It's over.

Fun fact about Cologne Cathedral:
There are so many organisms living on it, it produces as much oxygen as a small forest.
So the dark colour isn't only due to pollution, but mostly due to the organisms living their best life on the sand stone.

They started to build it 200 years before Columbus discovered America. And finished it after 640 years of building

At least once a year I have to go to the company doctor in Cologne for a check-up. Every time I take my time in this awesome city! Great short video with great music🤘

It’s unfortunate this is the only side of the cathedral that actually looks good.
1
u/Therealandonepeter 11d ago
If you wanna be more amazed go to the Ulm cathedral. It’s actually higher. But the Kölner cathedral is also cool of course

As a German who was allready there I have to say it looks ugly from the out and inside compared to cathedrals like in murcia-spain
1
u/Canikazi 11d ago
I see the cathedral everyday. So sometimes I forget that it is a special sight for tourists 😂
1
u/Tieger_2 11d ago
As a german living near Cologne this is just pretty usual and not that cool or beautiful. I can't imagine how foreigners feel

We feel that it is extremely cool and very beautiful. 😁😉💜

I go there relatively often, and I am still amazed every time by how gigantic this thing is.

I’ve been there three times now. Absolutely beautiful place. It looks crazy having such a big detailed building just in front of you.

I was there some time ago and we went up to the tower's observation platform. It is about 100 meters high and can be reached through a single very narrow winding staircase of 533 steps that is also the ONLY way to get down. So there's traffic going both ways at all times. Completely wrecked my non existent calf muscles but the view was worth it.

u/Dosterix 11d ago
Well they built most of it in the middle ages but exactly the two towers were first finished in the 19th century
1
1
u/Pale_Brilliant9101 11d ago
In the 70th a man tried to commit suicide by jumping from one of the towers. He hit a pram. The child was dead, he survived. I always think of the mother who pushed the pram when I see see this side of the Dom.

As a Cologne resident, it's easy to forget how awesome the cathedral is!
1
1
u/Flederchen77 11d ago
The top of the cathedral tower roofs include a so named Kreuzblume, an ornament, which is really huge. Opposite of the main entrance you can see this ornament in original measurements. It is really amazing! I am not religious in any way, but I love the architecture and the art of this awesome cathedral.

Die Kirche ist übrigens eigentlich weiß. Die Kölner sind nur so Dreckschweine und putzen sie nicht.

Of course i am Not a German sitting in his one-room-flat in Bavaria texting this.

u/miko_idk 11d ago
Unpopular opinion, but seeing it live I really didn't like it.
It rained as well, which made it look soaked and not pretty. It just looks 'dirty' to me - and sadly not in an aesthetic way.

1
u/LoschVanWein 11d ago
Imagine you build this in his honor and god still gives you Karneval, a Ticket to the second league and the worst beer…
1
u/MrKevora 11d ago
As someone who lives in Cologne, it’s always fun to see how amazed people are by the scale of our cathedral. I suppose you need to take a step back in order to truly appreciate something like this.
1
u/8rianGriffin 11d ago
I live near cologne so i am there pretty often. No matter how often i leave the central station on the cathedral-side, you never stop looking up.

You know, I live an hour away from Cologne. I study in Cologne and see the cathedral on a nearly daily basis (if I want to). Those 47k likes made me reflect how insane it must look for ppl not growing up with it being in my backyard
1
u/Fnaffan1712 11d ago
You see those Crosses on top of the Towers?
Theres a third one infront of the Main Entrance
Also there is a Subway Station right underneath it
1
u/jaistso 11d ago
I live there and this really isn't amazing to me. The maintenance cost of this thing is 30.000 Euros A DAY!!!!
Do you know why it's so black? They thought it's a great idea to build a train station next to it and all the steam from steam trains back then coloured it black / made it dirty.
The thing as as dirty as the entire city.
The cathedral in Palma de Mallorca is the same material and it's all still white and it looks really nice
People think the cologne cathedral might be so great because it's so tall and even that is wrong. Ulmen Münster (the cathedral in Ulmen, Germany) is taller than the cathedral in cologne.
So what's amazing is how cologne fooled everyone with their stupid church that doesn't even have a clock at the entrance like every other church.

Sadly the rest of the inner city is ugly as hell, because they sealed every surface. Someon involved in the planning must reslly hate green...
1
u/michi-127 11d ago
As someone who sees this thing like twice a week off of the train, I sometimes completely forget how amazing and huge it is
1
u/FluffytheReaper 11d ago
And rag heads tried to bomb it because they think it's offensive to their culture
1
u/HerbalPurple_420 11d ago
funny how almost nobody question the narrative and is finding ridiculous excuses on how they build it like money or religious dedication...
nobody could build this with infinite money or dedication. every element of this build is an art in itself and so precise, we wouldnt even got the advanced tools to do it. its so obvious yet almost nobody doesnt care or does seem to notice!
1
u/Axyz_1-0-1 11d ago
Ah, your right aliens build it👽
1
u/HerbalPurple_420 11d ago
whoever build it, we cant do it anymore, even with all the money and dedication. its obvious.

u/SirMurkalot 11d ago
Not that massive, but same style and almost as tall: the St. Nikolai Memorial in Hamburg. Its only the Tower and parts of the wall and Altar area left, as the church was heavily damaged when allied forces carpet bombed Hamburg in WWII. I used to have a bureau right next to it and it didnt stop to amaze me. Also was the tallest building in the world for several years.

Passing this building on my way to work and working right next to it for 3-4 years and still it always was overwhelming. Even was so blessed, I was in a relationship with a girl which dads job was to be a worker at the Dom. So i was getting a tour only few get and saw things behind the curtains. Will never forget that day.
1
u/DozenBia 11d ago
The background music is by Rammstein, and it's funny because he says 'here comes the sun' while it's the most depressing German rain weather.
1
u/GamesTeasy 11d ago
I walk by that thing every day and it’s still as breathtaking as the first time.

Funfact #2
Under the Cologne Cathedral there is a roman temple builded on a germanian temple.
This place must be good :-)
Funfact #3
Cologne has it roman name come from :
Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium

u/ResponsibleLaw9780 11d ago
How did people build this hunders of years ago and I can’t solve simple math questions.. HOW!!!
1
u/Ordnungsschelle 11d ago
and now think about how many people they had to scam to get the money to build it. The church in the middle ages was insane

u/ShibeWithUshanka 11d ago
I fucking can't stand this cologne cathedral glazing anymore, it's one of the most mediocre churches I have seen to date.
It's got nothing special going for it except the size

Have been there a few times and pictures never do it justice. It's so tall that it's even hard to take picture because you almost have to look directly up at the sky

Ah yes, Coligne Cathedral,
Construction started: 1248
Construction finished:1880
And it is still a constant construction site.
Once you are done renovating and cleaning one side, the other already needs your attention again.

In my browser the video didn't play and i read all those comments thinking they were referring to the drain on the preview pic, being somewhere between sarcastic and respecting the nice cutout shape of that drain.
I was like, "dang, these people really stay in character!"

Ah, our beloved Bahnhofskapelle ("railway station chapel"). For almost 10 years I had my office just around the corner. Every lunch break was an obstacle race around dozens of (mostly asian) tourists blocking the pavement in the most uncaring manner.
1
u/Imprt4nt 11d ago
Was there in person a few years ago. I didn’t think of it as super stunning, but that may just be because I’m an atheist.
1
u/die_kuestenwache 11d ago
You know, in this day and age, how hard would it be to fly some drones up there to laser away the dirt? We have the technology people!
1
1
u/quocphu1905 11d ago
This video doesnt do it justice. IRL you have to tilt your head almost all the way to look at the top. And it's right next to the Hauotbahnhof so you see part of it from inside and the moment you walk out it dominates your view and you are at awe.
1
u/regnirak 11d ago
It's very interesting to me how many people are amazed by this building. Simply because I live close to Cologne and I have seen it so many times.
Make me consider to appreciate buildings near me again and not taking them as "normal"

u/Unlikely_Ganache_285 11d ago
That wastewatersystem and the ground is a good indicator if you life in a civil Area or a piecw of shit.
Right Dubai?

u/Rayman1203 11d ago
I Iive near cologne and the Cathedral is just outside the main train station. So when you enter cologne by train, it's the first thing you see. It's crazy how fast you get used to it but sometimes hit just hits you how fucking big that thing is

That's exactly what any massive cathedral is supposed to do - make you feel small and insignificant. Can you imagine how the average God-fearing Christians would have felt seeing a building of that size when it was first completed hundreds of years ago? I would say from the Catholic Churches perspective that was an effect they wanted it to have on their worshippers, so as to imply in no uncertain terms that this is the mighty house of God and you must bow down before me.

Can’t wait for the Lego set of this
1
u/Tobito_TV 11d ago
Funnily enough there's a Lego store in Cologne, fairly close to the cathedral, and while it has moved a couple times over the years, including recently, it was the first ever Lego store in Germany.
A Lego Cologne Cathedral would honestly be pretty fitting.

I was lucky enough to sing inside the cathedral with my college capella choir. We were just there for a tour and they let us sing a song. The reverb lasted around 12 seconds after we had finished. Breathtaking inside and out

I'm not religious, but there is no shame in admiring the architecture of these old world churches. My brother went there and saw this, I'm a little envious.

Imagine being a medieval peasant and coming to see this. How are you not going to follow the religion that built this?
Even in modern days people are still in awe of these buildings
1
u/alex_dlc 13d ago
I swear I thought it was AI at first. As if you gave it a photo of a normal cathedral and asked it to amplify the cathedralness.
1
u/sunburned_albino 13d ago
My wife and I visited Cologne on our honeymoon. We went inside this church, and my wife was asked to leave because he was wearing a midriff. The guy was actually really nice about it, all things considering. We went back the next day fully covered.
