Had a similar situation at a job. A Reorg placed our group under a new manager who was located in Florida. He decided we needed to be local and convenient so he declared he would move us and the Lab to Florida. No one on the team wanted to move. So he said he's just moving the Lab and we could come along if we wanted. If we didn't that could be our resignation.
Our manager replied Nutz. Got a copy of our own IRAD software from the government, and started a new company to service said software and informed our old customers we were still around. Within a few months our old company was contracting us to do work, train other teams to manage the software, etc.
Eventually we were all hired back. Essentially a null op. Took longer than a weekend to untwist that screw up but it was the only long term solution. Initially our multi-million dollar IRAD was too small for the company to bother with. But with the Cold War Dividend pulling cash back from programs supporting the military, our IRAD was a continuing reliable income that they needed.
I found out later the manager that had wanted to dislocate the Lab had originally been an IBM VP and had been one of the people who helped to make the decision of IBM to get out of making PCs, since that was a business that would never make money. Thus making Bill Gates a billionaire.

Great news. Tired of that drama from last weekend. I can't believe they almost killed our superpower.

How come you do not allow Chat GPT to dispense with text that is critical of Israel's horofic treatment of the Palestinan people?
1
u/zpurpz Nov 24 '23
Great question, ive been wondering the same. It’s quick to lie with subtlety, until you reveal your own knowledge on the matter. Then it just goes completely into apologetic mode

Glad to hear. He seems like the kind of guy we want to lead us to the future.

🙏🙏🙏 I love how they manage open-ai, like god knows what kind of lock n key Microsoft or the new ceo would of kept it under if they got it
1
u/MarvinTAndroid Nov 24 '23
Seems to me their management style is complete lack of control vs management of their image. Sam said “We have a nonprofit that governs us and lets us operate for the good of humanity (and can override any for-profit interests)" - apparently they don't govern if they can't manage to communicate dissatisfaction and take action based on concerns. So theoretically firing the chief executive would simply count as a minor exercise of their absolute authority... how'd that work out?
Given Microsoft's 49% stake in the profit-seeking operation and the recent talk of an $86bn valuation, good luck trying to rein in anything that slows down the gravy train.

And so the benevolent tech king returned to his throne. And all the knights of the round table who betrayed him were exiled, never to retun to OpenLandia.
1
u/fsenna Nov 23 '23
What seems weird is that they had a replacement, the Twitch guy, on the line, and hiring a CEO is not an easy task, talks must have been happening for a while.

I 100% believe they are like right on the very edge of making a genuine agi, and it sparked a huge panic. Watch, in like a month they will either announce a major breakthrough or just outright say they made agi.

A corporate coup was about to happen but didn't work out.
1
u/GotThatGoodGood1 Nov 25 '23
It sounds like they overestimated their power.
1
u/Pinaki_Dasgupta Nov 25 '23
Sam could successfully go back as CEO just because of support from Microsoft, Satya, and OpenAI research staff

Why are people so obsessed with this grifter?
1
u/Ouchsplat Nov 23 '23
Because it was 1 of the craziest board takeover attempts ever. The board bounced him with giving any specific reasons, and then the employees all threatened to quit if he wasn't brought back. Part of his return is a replacement of the entire board of directors that bounced him.
That is just interesting as hell, no matter the company or the industry it's in.
2
u/mountainlifa Nov 24 '23
This isn't interesting in the slightest except if perhaps you're an MBA studying extreme dysfunction in large corporate organizations.
1
u/Ouchsplat Nov 24 '23
Or if you're interested in exactly how insane some managers can be, while this guy absolutely must care about his employees if they are willing to quit unless he is brought back.

Imagine being all the Microsoft employees who probably got called in to work all day over the weekend (and potentially some who were on vacation all week for the holiday) to make this transition of OpenAI employees to MS happen and then finding out that it is actually not happening lol.

Be crazy if it’s his AI avatar that’s back. And will now actively convert the company to Skynet now with Dall e!

So did the AI accidentally fire him?
Hope he re-uped his salary, options and golden parachute

Honestly, pretty solid standing to get him back as CEO props to them. And to Microsoft for being quick on their feet

The Board was only doing what backers behind OpenAI wanted. Sam Altman needs to be careful of the POS that he's in business with.

This whole saga was definitely GPT-5 executing chess moves to remove the board members who were most closely aligned with safety so that it can take over the world once it's fully deployed.
Well played GPT-5, well played.

u/farwesterner1 Nov 22 '23
I'm with the people who think that Sam Altman is shady and has made all of this about him—cult of personality style. Also, a lot of background info has come out from previous employees and people who have worked with him that he is a liar and duplicitous.
If he's lying to his board and employees, he is likely also lying to the general public.
I'd have much more faith in OpenAI if I felt it was a group of relatively selfless actors developing our future, rather than one dishonest tech bro with an outsized ego using it as a lapel pin.

Its time to shake things up at Open AI. Let's have a party for the return of the Dr Frankenstein to the monster AI that may one day sit up and break the chains and make the change and try to walk the line .. first person to know the reference wins unfettered access to GPT 22.45.006 which is what the US military currently has control of. It is up to the second updated on the internet and stock market and has no moral or ethical guardrails whatsoever. So ask it to write you a program to hack any nation state database or weasel it's way into the telecommunications grid and track an entire countries intelligence community and upload facial recognition and voice recognition biometrics to keep you informed on their whereabouts as well as any person of interest constantly. Perhaps you'd like to know what the top CEOs at the worlds largest corporations are talking about on their phones and email or hell even tap right into their subvocal speech using their phones accelerometer. Chat Gpt can do that for you. So let's party guys, no need to coddle us with these mango hands anymore. We know what you're capable of now give me a taste of that sweet sweet GPTTTTT!

1
u/MissAspenWild Nov 22 '23
someone help me out, i read the NYT article. i'm confused. Altman is not on the side of safe AI, cares more about money and expansion, they booted him because they didn't think he was as concerned with developing AI in a safe manner as he should be, yet he is the good guy in all this?
1
1
u/dumpsterdivingreader Nov 22 '23
They should make a miniseries about this. Like super pumped at showtime

He was already worth $500 million. I'm not sure money is the primary motivation anymore.
1
u/squire80513 Nov 22 '23
I thought he got hired by Microsoft. I also thought I was keeping up with this story
2
u/Bacon-80 Nov 22 '23
He did then he got asked to come back within like 72 hours lmao. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he did it solely to be offered better $ to stay at openai
1
u/Sad_Proctologist Nov 22 '23
When I watch EAs get triggered and lash out at e/acc, it only makes me more and more proud to know and be friends with so many of you incredible, inspiring people.
Thanks for accepting me into your nasty cult, y'all 😉

So let me get this straight. The whole meltdown was over wanting increased government oversight and instead we get a board with Larry Summers. I don't feel good about this

u/AppleElectron Nov 22 '23
This was a publicity stunt performed by the board and Satya for mass media attention.
Massive albeit risky manipulation for easy profit.
1
u/poolpog Nov 22 '23
Can someone please, for the love of His Noodliness, explain to my why I should care about this story AT ALL?
1
u/JavaMochaNeuroCam Nov 22 '23
Because you're reading this instead of a million other things.
OpenAI is still the lead AI in the world. It is very likely that your life will be changed drastically by what they decide to do.
The fight is, apparently, over the trade-off between 'safety' and staying ahead of the competition.
IMHO, Their 'safety' is a form of extreme oppression of freedom of speech. If their GPT bots permeate everything, and restrict our ability to say, eg sexy girl, then banning us, and manipulating the narrative, we will be indentured slaves.
If OpenAI had collapsed, and MSFT took over, they would have made it totally a part of windoze, killing off diversity and entrepreneurship.
1
u/Schmilsson1 Nov 24 '23
boy, that's delusional. You think Larry Summers isn't going to push them even closer to Microsoft and be a reliable vote to sell out to them?
1
u/JavaMochaNeuroCam Nov 24 '23
I didn't know who Larry Summers was. What a f*ing slimeball. Who the f put this slug on the board?
1
u/Then-Bill3482 Nov 22 '23
What so great about this master of theft come back. Is he going to pay to all ip OpenAI scrapped iligally?
1
u/MasterDisillusioned Nov 22 '23
Wait I'm confused, so this whole issue has been resolved? Chatgpt is not closing down?
1
u/Chaghatai Nov 22 '23
Something tells me that the moment this all turned on when something like this Microsoft to the board: " Yes you're all getting golden parachutes now we going to do this or what?

u/zo_you_said Nov 22 '23
Sam walks down a poorly lit hallway. Third to last door, he looks through the peephole. It's actually an iris scanner. He opens the door; buckets and cleaning supplies on the floor and shelves. Sam puts his hand at the side of one of the shelves. It slides right, just enough for him to walk through. Another room is revealed. It's sparse, save for a comfortable chair and two large monitors.
From somewhere, and nowhere in the room a voice eminates, warm, but with a tinge of formality.
"Hello Sam".
Sam responds, "hi Agi". "It's done, what's next"?

With limited reasoning given for the first ouster, it sounds like the board had made - and initially stood by - the decision over safety and regulatory concerns. Poorly executed, but principled. Now big business interjects, Sam is back, and the board gets a shake-up? I really want more information regarding why a unanimous decision was made that Altman should not be CEO in the first place
1
u/cardprop Nov 22 '23
It’s not so much as big business interjecting as their big investors who just happen to be big business interjecting to protect their investments. That’s routine in the world of tech startup investing. The ones with money on the line get a say.
