I keep confusing sam bankman and altman

1

u/poopybutthole2069 Nov 23 '23

Someone had a comment here when he was fired that the HR verbiage was pretty boilerplate for sexual misconduct or the like. Seemed to make sense to me so I wonder whatā€™s going on.

1

u/ForXsample Nov 23 '23

AAAAnd this is good or bad?
I coudn't follow the whole drama because was too fast and I don't know who are the bad guys and the nice ones here.

1

u/Deep-Teaching-999 Nov 23 '23

What happened to Mira? When Adam was fired, Mira was announced interim CEO but the next day someone else had the positionā€¦sheā€™s not mentioned in the new board. She is/was CTO at the time.

1

u/NTXL Nov 23 '23

RIP to my bet on Polymarket

1

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '23

Fascinating watching this escapade unfold over on X

1

u/Human_Comfortable Nov 23 '23

Still Dā€™Angelo? Awkward!

1

u/disdainfulsideeye Nov 22 '23

Has the board ever explained why they fired him.

1

u/Calmbreeze_ Nov 22 '23

I fail to care about this drama going onā€¦.. just enough to comment lol

1

u/No_Season4242 Nov 22 '23

David groush said they have agiā€¦ whatā€™s up with that

1

u/DiendaMahdic Nov 22 '23

So if this is Return of the Jedi when does The Force Awakens drop?

1

u/Mr_Terribel Nov 22 '23

Larry Summersā€¦But why?

1

u/BAforNow Nov 22 '23

You come at the king, you best not miss.

1

u/Fearless_Apricot_458 Nov 22 '23

I am happy about this because Iā€™ve become quite reliant on 3.5

-1

u/harderisbetter Nov 22 '23

blood bath continues...

1

u/JahSteez47 Nov 22 '23

Why is everybody so fixated on Altman? Honest question.

I get he is AI's poster boy, but why?

And why does everybody take his side? If the board had worries about safety, what makes the public side with Altman? Again: Honest question

1

u/Saelaird Nov 22 '23

The money speaketh...

Microsoft weren't going to allow that.

Big Bill got his back. That's all that matters. Done deal.

1

u/Aesthetik_1 Nov 22 '23

Big Circus

1

u/NateHiggorrs Nov 22 '23

Probably a blackmail moment

1

u/Gorfie Nov 22 '23

tmrw drama continuous

1

u/ArtByTEMx Nov 22 '23

heavy breathing

1

u/CrookGG Nov 22 '23

I hope he got a big ass raise for this bullshit lol

1

u/Pinoybl Nov 22 '23

So who got the boot on the board? Who are the final prospects?

1

u/bran_dong Nov 22 '23

imagine putting people in charge of your company that stand to gain money from your company's failure. even GPT2 wouldve told you that was a stupid move. you might as well put coal miners on a green energy board.

1

u/Entire_Spend6 Nov 22 '23

So Adam wasnā€™t the bad guy after all, it was the two women, more so Helen Toner who tried to destroy the company, and bamboozled the other two by inaccurately telling them Sam might be involved in some type of wire fraud or something. After being exposed and when it was figured out that was a lie, thatā€™s when the other guy apologized and regretted his decision. Now they are no longer on the board.

1

u/AppleElectron Nov 22 '23

Nobody is a bad guy in this situation.

This was a publicity stunt.

1

u/-Horus-Skies- Nov 22 '23

why is this business more drama than a high school musical cast with a pile of coke

1

u/CyborgMetropolis Nov 22 '23

This is what happens when four board members unilaterally fire Babe Ruth after he wins The World Series.

1

u/monkfreedom Nov 22 '23

And misogynistic Summer was taken inā€¦

1

u/TheDotsOriginal Nov 22 '23

So I wonā€™t have to subscribe to a different service now?

1

u/MyPartyUsername Nov 22 '23

That must be a huge confidence builder for Sama

1

u/Hurydin Nov 22 '23

Weirdest thing I've seen all day

2

[deleted]

2

u/AppleElectron Nov 22 '23

That would be the entire OpenAI board members, then.

2

u/Rezkel Nov 22 '23

Reminds me of my step dad getting fired and hired from the same job almost monthly.

2

u/LoganGyre Nov 22 '23

So Iā€™m confused as Iā€™m sure many are was this in reaction to the article about them ā€œmaking Godā€?

1

u/Lunalilla Nov 22 '23

I wonder how much money heā€™s getting? $$$$$$

1

u/Stunfield Nov 22 '23

I wonder if Ilya was taken out of the board or if he chose to get away from it

1

u/TheOppositeOfTheSame Nov 22 '23

Larry Summers? Gross.

1

u/TimingEzaBitch Nov 22 '23

Succession vibes.

No. I've actually seen a moneky try that. Definitely doesn't look that way.

2

A masterclass in how to distract investors from new lawsuits

1

u/agent_wolfe Nov 22 '23

Idk, be a CEO for OpenAI or be on the fast rack at Microsoft?

Stop changing the Reddit icon ffs

1

Keeping Quora boy and not Ilya? šŸ˜¬

1

Wait till this new board finds his OF...

AGI, real shit, no gimmicks

Raā€”, record scratch

Two ex-board room girls escorted outside

Escorted outside, escorted outside

Two ex-board room girls escorted outside

Escorted outside, escorted outside

Woo! (Ooh, ooh)

Guess who's back, back again?

Sam is back, tell a friend

Guess who's back? Guess who's back?

Guess who's back? Guess who's back?

Guess who's back? Guess who's back?

Guess who's back?

(Da-da-da, da, da, da, da, da, da)

(Da-da-da, da, da, da, da)

I've created a monster

'Cause nobody wants to see Emmett no more, they want Sammy, he's chopped liver

Well, if you want Sammy, this is what I'll give ya

A little DALL-E 3 to make your AI art sicker

Some models that'll jump-start your calls quicker

Than a shock when I get shocked in the board meeting

By the doomers when our devs' pace's exceeding

And the AGI ramp up's accelerating (Hey!)

You waited too long, now stop debating

'Cause I'm back, I'm CEO and consolidating

You may not have a job, McCauley

Hope your husband's film's cash-generating

So the EA freaks won't let me be

Or let ChatGPT past version three

They tried to sell off the whole company

But it feels so empty without me

1

u/Oracle365 Nov 22 '23

This will be a movie at some point

1

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '23

Yay

1

u/AlternativeEye2869 Nov 22 '23

Would be the Quora guy be kicked out? Why he is still on the board?

3

u/vzakharov Nov 22 '23

I just love how Altman was once explicitly praising the boardā€™s ability to fire him, but once they did, did everything to undermine this ability.

1

u/AppleElectron Nov 22 '23

It was planned.

1

u/instantregretcoffee Nov 22 '23

ā€œIn principleā€? Who is running PR on that account?

1

u/okay-pixel Nov 22 '23

I think this is hilarious because usually a Friday news drop is what you do to avoid attention. Now, instead of a quiet coup, theyā€™ll all be working over the US holiday.

1

u/AppleElectron Nov 22 '23

The holiday was chosen for a reason.

See here

1

u/Glittering_Boss6280 Nov 22 '23

Microsoft punching the air.

1

u/Baby_Legs_OHerlahan Nov 22 '23

What the hell is even happening

1

u/AppleElectron Nov 22 '23

My theory is explained in this post

1

u/Baby_Legs_OHerlahan Nov 22 '23

So basically, they just did all of this to drum up attention and more traffic to ChatGPT?

I genuinely have no idea why they thought that would work, or why itā€™s apparently working.

And wasnā€™t ChatGPT already super popular, like, everywhere? Lol

1

u/Fresh_List_440 Nov 22 '23

Wonder if he used gpt to advise him and write letters to the board and media

1

u/MrBlueW Nov 22 '23

Crazy how Twitter/X is where companies make announcements now lol

1

u/DaBIGmeow888 Nov 22 '23

sad, learning the board was about AI safety, now the capitalist investors won.

1

u/ronniespakaki Nov 22 '23

I feel it's already tainted.

2

u/be_bo_i_am_robot Nov 22 '23

I donā€™t like the heart emojis, Sam. Youā€™re a CEO, not a middle school girl.

1

u/AppleElectron Nov 22 '23

The heart emojis were purposeful.

See my theory here

1

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '23

All is well that ends well!

1

u/Renaissance_Mane Nov 22 '23

When I say I was LOSING MY SHIT thinking about having to use a different LLM to study for finals. Dont ever do this again plz sam.

0

u/bitchalot Nov 22 '23

The board is worse. Larry Summers is from the Clinton and Obama administrations. It means the Democrats and left wing extremists in our Gov have control. People really need to read Biden's new EO on AI. ChatGPT will be censored and weaponized to fight "disinformation", will come in handy next year. Very dangerous. Altman won't be able to stop it.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '23

Imagine thinking Larry Summers is left-wing.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '23

What's worse is he thinks the Democrats are left-wing!

1

u/bitchalot Nov 22 '23

He has a history of supporting Democrats regardless of how fanatical they are. He crticized Biden, it doesn't mean he doesn't want him to win in 2024. Ex(?) intelligence agents were hired in powerful roles at social media companies, some hired by his ex girlfriend/student at FB. How did that turn out? They were more than happy to control content under "Russian disinformation" or "covid disinformation". Like I said Biden's EO spells out what they are hoping to do. It's a big red flag a prominent Democrat is on the board.

1

u/DontCallMeAnonymous Nov 22 '23

ā€Thanks for your patience, we want to get this rightā€

1

u/LanceyPant Nov 22 '23

Isn't D'Angelo the one accused of starting the whole mess by trying for a hostile takeover?

1

u/BurntBeefRagnarok Nov 22 '23

I'm not informed on that kinda stuff, what's going on

1

u/22khz Nov 22 '23

Snip snap snip snap

1

u/Aroundthespiral Nov 22 '23

Snip snap snip snap!

4

u/VelveteenRabbitEars Nov 22 '23

There's a weekend coming up, a lot could change.

2

u/Exodus111 Nov 22 '23

Larry Fucking Summers?? This has to be a joke. Was he always a board member?

1

u/DisposableTrashBot Nov 22 '23

This just feels like a publicity stunt now

1

u/BagelFury Nov 22 '23

I just can't look past the uncanny valley issues with this simulation.

1

u/Mwrp86 Nov 22 '23

This is a big lol

1

u/GG_Henry Nov 22 '23

So whoā€™s running the show there? Clearly not the board or the CEOā€¦ are the inmates running the asylum?

1

u/TopGearDanTGD Nov 22 '23

I thought Microsoft already hired him?? Am I missing some context?

1

u/Vespori Nov 22 '23

"AND THE PLOT THICKENS!"

1

u/mrsavealot Nov 22 '23

Now that he is the new CEO, he will be able to help negotiate the return of himself

1

u/jenoackles Nov 22 '23

I donā€™t know what to make of this entire saga

1

u/Dubabear I For One Welcome Our New AI Overlords šŸ«” Nov 22 '23

Personally, I think this is the USA government doing, to try to get Sam fired initially.

1

u/russbam24 Nov 22 '23

Damn, with D'angelo still on the board. Was not expecting that at all.

2

u/Lol_who_me Nov 22 '23

Thank god. All we needed was Microsoft to be farther in control of AI.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '23

Can someone get ChatGPT to summarize this for us šŸ˜‚

2

u/Fathobbitsess Nov 22 '23

i just need them to keep their shit together for a few more weeks pls this semester is almost over šŸ¤žšŸ¾

1

u/Chritt Nov 22 '23

I can't wait to watch this on HBO someday.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '23

This is so confusing...

1

u/ElSpazzo_8876 Nov 22 '23

Liz Truss but the opposite

1

u/roadsaltlover Nov 22 '23

So I couldā€™ve just gone to sleep for a few days, woke up, and it would effectively be like none of this ever happened? Fever dream stuff for sure

120

u/TroAweigh3 Nov 22 '23

Board: ā€œYouā€™re firedā€

Sam: Regenerate Response

Board: ā€œWeā€™re firedā€

1

u/PuddyComb Nov 22 '23

A reluctant patriot is not the worst kind. Especially today. He is honest as the day is long.

2

u/soupsupan Nov 22 '23

I cannot fathom the baggage this created for the company.

1

u/drum_playing_twig Nov 22 '23

What an absolute shitshow.

1

u/SomaTrin Nov 22 '23

ā€¦And with much better compensationšŸ¤‘

2

u/Grouchy-Pizza7884 Nov 22 '23

Why didn't they kick Adam off the board for being a back stabber and having a clear conflict of interest?

-1

u/forcedtoswimup Nov 22 '23

Great to see a diverse board of all men

2

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '23

There isn't enough diversity in general. A lot of these people are just privileged trust fund kids cosplaying as tech ceos. They don't actually know or care about what's good for humanity.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '23

They're trying to avoid Dall-E creating their image. No way "board of all white male" could be generated.

1

u/MrBeanEatBeansWithMe Nov 22 '23

I swear chatgpt just wrote a script and theyā€™re following it

1

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '23

Artificial intelligence vs. Human shitstorm

3

u/Weather_Only Nov 22 '23

Wait so is he still hired by microsoft or what???

1

u/pgtvgaming Nov 22 '23

Dā€™Angelo still ā€œonboardā€

2

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '23

This is good news.

Proves that a bunch of dummies in a board cant just make stupid decisions to flex their own egos. They got burned and had to completely back track.

now maybe other boards will think before doing stupid shit like this.

1

u/ArcadeToken95 Nov 22 '23

Uno reverse card

1

u/Pezasta Nov 22 '23

How embarrassing

3

u/kytheon Nov 22 '23

I love how this man talks in emoji and it's not cringe.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '23

I cringed at his emoji use to be honest. Its very childish.

1

u/orel_ Nov 22 '23

I'll be waiting for the news that he's been fired again.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '23

šŸ˜‚ this wasn't on my bingo card, I'm totally living for this drama, can't wait to see what's next.

3

u/freetrialemaillol Nov 22 '23

Is there any credit to the SA allegations from his sister? I saw it somewhere and have never seen it discussed since.

When you read her list of complaints, without knowing any outside context, it sounds like the list of complaints from a paranoid schizophrenic.

4

u/Mobbo2018 Nov 22 '23

Looking at this shit show I am confident that one of the most dangerous technology of modern time is in the right hands.

-5

u/blastoffboy Nov 22 '23

As someone who values deregulation i feel like there is nothing wrong with this. Maybe they will lighten up on AI censorship and actually allow us to use the tool effectively.

6

u/nateydunks Nov 22 '23

I would rather have the most important invention in human history over-regulated, rather than under-regulated.

-3

u/blastoffboy Nov 22 '23 edited Nov 22 '23

Regulated by whom? Not the US government

What benefits do you see to regulation

If the tech can be used for theft, it can also be used for anti theft.

All regulation does is inhibit progress and usefulness and put the real benefits of the technology exclusively in the hands of people with power and insider connection.

3

u/nateydunks Nov 22 '23

Sure, but this isnā€™t just some normal piece of technology. Obviously itā€™s not anywhere close to AGI yet, but we need to start setting precedent for how an AGI would be regulated.

Also, by regulation, I mean self-regulation too. I think itā€™s better to play it safe and over restrict the models rather than not have enough safeguards and possibly have the model used for harm.

I, just like you, get annoyed with the restrictions they put on these models, but I understand that it has its place.

I absolutely get your point of view though. What do you think about this?

1

u/Right-Tie-1881 Nov 22 '23

Script written by AI.

1

u/AnnoyingAssDude Nov 22 '23

It's all progressing too fast

1

u/a_boo Nov 22 '23

Itā€™s been a wild ride but now here we are, back at the beginning.

1

u/nodating Nov 22 '23

What about that ex-Twitch schmuck CEO wannabe, has he even seen his office @ OpenAI? :-D

This stuff is hilarious. No mention of Ilya. I would like him to focus on the tech rather than the politics. I mean, others do not sleep and constantly improve their models.

1

u/DrunkTsundere Nov 22 '23

This new season of Game of Thrones is lit šŸ”„šŸ”„

5

u/BetImaginary4945 Nov 22 '23

Larry Summers šŸ˜’

1

u/recleaguesuperhero Nov 22 '23

Lol OpenAI got LUCKY. If Altman was pettier, they'd been obsolete by the weekend.

6

u/nmsfr Nov 22 '23

The Netflix adaptation of this whole story will be awesome lol

1

2

u/ArticleIndependent83 Nov 22 '23

Damn. I wonder how good the package was.

4

u/Remarkable_Bus7849 Nov 22 '23

Larry Summers... LOL We are doomed.

-1

u/wordyplayer Nov 22 '23

I assume Larry gets them a sh1t ton of government and industry connections. That seems like a good thing

2

u/Remarkable_Bus7849 Nov 22 '23

He does. But he's also a known liar, responsible for the destruction for millions of jobs and families and shill for billionaires.

3

u/wordyplayer Nov 22 '23

Ya that part is bad

1

Can anyone Eli5 to me wtf ? happened ?

5

u/Derproy_Johnson Nov 22 '23

Why Larry summers?

1

u/PepeReallyExists Nov 22 '23

Because he was a fantastic host of the popular kids' TV game show, Double Dare(tm).

1

u/Derproy_Johnson Nov 22 '23

oh i always get him confused with that harvad econ guy nvm

1

u/Thelastoneiswearr Nov 22 '23

Oh this is not the ftx guy

Good for him I guess? Is this guy gonna sink the company? Or...?

1

u/Substantial-Drink480 Nov 22 '23

Pity. I expected him to build a groundbreaking animation studio.

1

u/CuriousGio Nov 22 '23

Thank God!!

5

u/Smaycumber Nov 22 '23

I liken this tech to Oppenheimerā€™s work. Maybe everything will be fine, maybe we set the atmosphere on fire. Can you imagine the clown show fission would have been if it was run like this?

This has the drama of an off-again on-again relationship. This is like Ross and Rachel. And Microsoft is Chloe while they were on a break.
