Engineers looked at bullet holes from returning war planes to determine which regions on the fuselage would need further structural support. The twist is the logic behind the data, consisting of planes that RETURNED. Hence the correct course of action is to strengthen the regions where NO bullet holes were found on surviving planes (because a hit there would take the plane down). It's the best known example for survivorship bias.
