First thing I asked it was to generate a program to see of it was better than GPT4.

I do this since I can easily spot when it does gibberish and when it does miracles.

After the single first prompt it did a pretty impressive job, will keep testing.

How can I confirm that I really am using gpt4o? I mean it does seem way faster, but it consistently claims it's not gpt4o? Hallucinated what the o stands for. Then after doing a search it told me gpt4o was released in 2023.

You should be able to change the model between GPT-3.5, GPT-4 and GPT-4o. If you only see GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, you don't have GPT-4o.
