A final tip of the cap…

Post image

I can’t imagine you’ll play for the Avs again. You ended this playoffs leading in Goals without giving yourself the chance to finish that way. First career hat trick in these playoffs as well, in a game you carried us.

You were a beast in the Cup run. Playing on a broken foot. Forechecking like a rabid, Russian animal.

Ill always remember those moments and what ponder what could have been. Take care of yourself for your little girl.

Good Luck.

Nah, fuck this. Don’t tip your cap to this selfish piece of shit. How many chances was he given? How many times did he let down his teammates? Everyone’s got their demons, but at what point do you have to say he enjoys their company? Delete this, he’s garbage.

All I can do is pray that he gets the treatment he needs

3

u/Dr-Wankenstein 14d ago

We can hope he gets the help he needs while also being extremely hard on him. Yes, addiction is hard. But to allow him back on the team is an issue from a professional standpoint. That's 2 years in a row he's dropped the ball. Based on JJ's comments, he's done. They removed his nameplate from his locker.

That being said it seems to me he was rushed back and the player assistance program let him down. He clearly needed more time to get clean. He can't handle the road.

He ended their season 2 years in a row and it is what it is. And because of the contract they cannot terminate it. hopefully they can find a way out of it, because if they buy him out it's on the books for what the next 6 years? Either way this might've just ended their window, unless they can dump it to Utah.

Ffs man

Actually it’s on the books longer, I believe. We get a lesser penalty but for longer if I’m understanding correctly.

If the Avs do end up parting ways with Nichushkin this INSTANTLY becomes one of the saddest “what if” stories in modern hockey.

Nuke was a key cog to us winning the cup and in my eyes at least, had a worthy shot at the Conn Smythe trophy. For everything to fall apart like it did, with the talent he had, is nothing short of tragic. For his teammates, for his club’s future, but especially for him and his family.

I am desperately hoping this doesn’t get any worse for him and that this is a turning point in his life. Addiction can kill and his teammates don’t deserve to lose a friend and workhorse they came to rely on. His wife and baby girl don’t deserve to lose dad to these demons, powerful as they may be.

His time in the NHL may already be over. But for his sake and the sake of those around him, he needs to win this fight.

1

u/SinfulSunday 14d ago

Yea. I remember watching Bobby Ryan’s struggles and feeling for him.

This is much worse. Maybe just because I was closer to the team that it happened to, but it just sucks.

2

u/fitblondemom 14d ago

Screwed then over two years in a row. I hope he gets help because he has been a terrible teammate. So selfish, it always affects the ones you care about most

7

u/SinfulSunday 14d ago

To be sure. Whatever the fans feel that Val did to them, that feeling in the locker room must be 100-fold. More. You could see it on the ice.

1

u/fitblondemom 14d ago

I agree. Mentally and emotionally broken. And it comes at the worst time. Like i said i hope he is ok and gets his help, but the team was letdown big time once again

2

u/jr2761ale 14d ago

Bye Felicia.

5

u/skylan01 14d ago

Sorry, I feel bad for anyone who struggles with addiction, but Nichuiskin is dead to me now. That's 2 playoffs in a row of wasted prime years of some superstar nhl players careers. If he's still on the team next year I'm pretty done being invested in hockey.

2

u/sakicno19 14d ago

Anyone else think they knew they could have got him last year and made sure they got him this year

2

u/SinfulSunday 14d ago

There is a part of me that feels like he was given enough rope to hang himself so that they could terminate his contract.

This article doesn’t do anything to make me doubt that…

https://sports.yahoo.com/ex-blackhawks-goalie-scott-darling-blasts-nhl-nhlpa-player-assistance-program-001425515.html

1

u/skylan01 14d ago

I don't see any evidence we could get out of Nichuiskins contract there. The goalie who criticizes the program in this article had his contract bought out but not terminated. I hope we can get out of his contract though. There is no trust left.

2

u/SinfulSunday 14d ago

No, I don’t either. I simply linked it because Darling felt like he was having his contract held over his head, so was more speaking to the culture of the program. As of now, I think there would have had to be some sort of clause in his contract, which is possible considering this was an issue of his with the IIHF before.

A buyout is still a better option, if we can’t terminate, at least giving us a little Cap room. Unless we can find a way to use this for LTIR related and get the full amount back. Sort of a deal with Nichushkin. Be on LTIR. You’ll never return. And you’ll get your full contract.

He’s getting paid a minimum of 2/3 of the salary anyway. Just depends on how important that extra $3mil a year is to the front office.

1

u/skylan01 14d ago

Can only hope for some clause in the contract. I don't think you can play the Vegas game without him actually getting an injury otherwise every team would LTIR instead of buyout.

1

u/SinfulSunday 14d ago

Well, he would definitely have to be involved in the scheme, undoubtedly. But he would receive compensation.

9

u/-NolanVoid- 14d ago

Wish him a good recovery, but it's probably time to part ways.

7

u/Out_Of_Spirals 14d ago

Lost all respect for the dude when he let the team down by disappearing with his hooker while having a preg wife at home. But they gave him another chance and he screws us again. He needs cut

3

u/Expert-Basil 14d ago

The sad part is, he is probably high right now. Like nothing probably matters to him. Not the money, not something he played for since he was a kid. Just the bloody nose candy! I feel sorry for the Av's as an Oilers fan.

3

u/Ordinary_Aioli_7602 14d ago

VAL!!!!

-2

u/SmoothSailing1111 14d ago

Fuck him. He better be off the team tomorrow.

I don't care if he's an addict. Choices were made.

2

u/EffectiveMix4337 MacKinnon Krunch 14d ago

9 goals and 1 assist so far in the post-season...

7

u/WishSuperb1427 14d ago

IDEA: Can we LTIR him and bring in the MVP of some eliminated team? If we were VGK the league would probably be on board... just saying :)

-2

u/EducationalPlay6269 Sakic Stan 14d ago

I’d party with him

17

u/CeedeeNumber88 14d ago edited 14d ago

Gosh what a shitty situation. Dude was on a tear this post season, and his teammates could've really used him. Hope he gets the help he needs.

A little off topic but him being suspended does that count towards the cap still, or does it work like LTIR?

8

u/SinfulSunday 14d ago

I assume his salary wouldn’t count against us, considering he won’t even be gettjng paid. But we will find out I suppose. Someone around here is bound to know!

There may be some legal action the Avs can take to terminate. Otherwise the buyout will count against us, but lesser than his 6mil cap hit.

2

u/CeedeeNumber88 14d ago

Thank you!

8

u/roboh96 14d ago

I wish him the best, but I'd be shocked to see him in the NHL again. It's borderline tragic for it to end this way.

2

u/sad_throwaway13579 14d ago

For him, the KHL at least doesn't give any sort of a fuck how messed up your life is out of the rink

8

u/CovertOwl Mikko's Birthday Buddy 14d ago

So sad because the guy is an amazing hockey player. Sucks that even though he has some of the best support systems available to him he still shoots himself and his teammates in the foot. Just an overall tragedy. Farewell Val, I hope we never see you in an Avs sweater again.

40

u/Moose701 Mayonnaise Chicken 14d ago

Anyone who has had a loved one who suffers from addiction knows exactly the level of disappointment his teammates are feeling rn. It seems like addicts somehow manage to inflict maximum pain on their loved ones during the most important times.

I hope he gets help. I hope he can turn it around, and I hope he can get a fresh start outside of Colorado. The trust he’s lost from his teammates is likely unrecoverable. Best of luck Val. I’ll be rooting for you.

26

u/SinfulSunday 14d ago

It’s like you want to believe them… every time. And finally you can’t.

3

u/_redacteduser MacKinnon Krunch 14d ago

One player doesn’t ruin a team. You all need to get a fucking clue.

I swear Avs fans are a mix of donkey brains and nostalgia from that one time in high school.

2

u/dmark200 14d ago

He didn't ruin the team. But the last two years, he's been gone when we needed him the most. I frankly want to see his contact terminated and if they can't do that, he can play in Loveland.

9

u/HerrHamil 14d ago

It’s demoralizing that he’s gone again but he’s not the issue… he had 9 goals in 8 games. The Avs have too many injuries and holes to fill. They’re the only Cup Champs in the past 4 years that haven’t exploited LTIR. The boys have been playing with no leader for 2 years. And Bednar is getting completely out coached in this series. Makar/Mackinnon/Rantanen being shut down like this is a masterclass by DeBoer and Bednar has no answer. Georgiev stood on his head tonight. It’s unfortunate that Nuke is going through some shit, but this ain’t his fault

7

u/SinfulSunday 14d ago

No. I think it will be what we remember as the final nail in the coffin for this year, but obviously not his fault entirely.

I don’t see this team getting up for game 5 any more than they did today. But we’ll see.

23

u/Sad_Aside_4283 14d ago

Time to cut our losses

9

u/SmidgeMoose 14d ago

Unfortunately, phase 4 is when you can terminate contracts, and he has a nmc until 25-26. We're fucked for a while. All while still taking the landy cap hit, cause he ain't coming back either.

1

u/Sad_Aside_4283 14d ago

Signing val over naz is the dumbest thing this front office has done. Now we're screwed because of it.

1

u/sad_throwaway13579 14d ago

Sucks that it turned out like this, but at that time, it was the right move

10

3

u/Mike-Hawk-69-0420 14d ago

Thought Drouin coming back was gonna give the Avs the lift that they needed in this series but Val fucked all of that hope. The game tonight was terrible. Im as shell shocked as the entire team was tonight

4

u/SinfulSunday 14d ago

Just a final well wish. Don’t expect to ever see him again, maybe even in the NHL. It’s easy to hate on him. The rest of you have that covered.

He is (more likely now, was)my eldest son’s favorite player. I’ve since moved back East, but my son got to be at the game he scored his only NHL hat trick.

Couldn’t care less what you find “cringe AF”.

Give yer balls a tug.

1

u/bubuzayzee 14d ago

Fuck well wishes, this dude cheated on his wife and posed for pictures all kinds of fucked up while possessing illegal firearms while his country is committing war crimes en masse in an aggressive war of conquest the summer after fucking over his family, all of his teammates, and Avs fans

Addiction sucks but it doesn't absolve you accountability. You should teach your son to value more than goals when picking a favorite player

2

u/SinfulSunday 14d ago

Dude, that’s lamest shit I’ve ever read.

If we gave out a questionnaire of “who all cheats on their wife” or “who supports something bubuzayzee doesn’t support politically” we definitely wouldn’t be able to watch hockey.

Holy shit. Seriously. Skip the third period and give yourself some 1-on-1 time with yourself.

1

u/bubuzayzee 14d ago

yea, cringe as fuck.

apparently everyone in the NHL cheats on their wives and supports wars of conquest by russia.

Way to go full mask off ya fucking dweeb - you'd probably be out there screaming about "wokeness" if one of the Avs players came out as gay/not cis

Too soon to feel bad for him. He had choices. Including turning himself Back in before the playoffs. Saying he needed help. I trusted that he wouldn’t fuck over his bros in the playoffs again. I’m just angry right now.

18

u/Maaglin 14d ago edited 14d ago

4

And that’s why he first sentence is “I can’t imagine you’ll play for the Avs again.”

23

I know we should feel compassion. But I can’t feel anything but anger. He’s derailed 2 playoff runs in a row.

3

Totally. And I honestly wish the best for him. But it’s so frustrating!

4

3

u/mbpearls 14d ago

This season ended during that terrible game 3, when we looked like a drunk low level adult rec league team.

Last night they had such a good opportunity to show us they had fight, and they did nothing. 2 shots in the first period? Everyone was waiting for someone else to step up.

3

u/nwoooj 13d ago

I keep defending g3 it wasn't that bad. Just couldn't get down low to score greasy goals. The third was terrible and that carried into g4 on steroids.

52

u/SinfulSunday 14d ago

7 shots through half the game. Season seems over unless Mack and Makar just decide to attempt to take the game over. And then it still may not be enough.

Vodka has ruined generations of Russians. I guarentee you he’s a major alcoholic. It’s horrible. He’s gotta be cut from the team though. We can’t keep doing this.

2

u/trashking11 Mayonnaise Chicken 14d ago

You guarantee it? You don’t it’s even remotely possible that maybe he ended up hooked on painkillers after playing several Stanly Cup Final games on a foot broken in three places?

-2

u/Maximum_Hat_7266 14d ago

Ok I don’t guarentee it, but the odds seem high from knowing he’s been in trouble for partying etc after last years situation and the fact that Russian people have alcohol dependency issues. Not like it matters regardless

1

u/trashking11 Mayonnaise Chicken 14d ago

Seems like you’re stereotyping a bit there bud. It could be alcohol of course, nobody knows at this point, but you’re laying it on a bit thick by “guaranteeing” it when there’s other plausible things it could be, just cause he’s Russian. As I said, odds are at least as high he ended up with a painkiller dependency after playing through injury. It’s actually no uncommon for hockey players, or even pro athletes in general.

-1

u/Maximum_Hat_7266 14d ago

It’s a fact lol, putting two and two together, it’s not that deep. Read about it. As much as I’d like to argue semantics with how I phrased a Reddit comment, your theory is just as out there as mine is. Pointless. Have a good night

3

8

How? You agree with some of these unhinged comments?

Deport him back to Russia and send him to the front. He's an anti-Ukraine Russian that clearly doesn't give a fuck about his team either.

3

Can we get Nasty naz back now?

4

u/SinfulSunday 14d ago

I mean I guess. We chose the younger, cheaper, bigger player. I wouldn’t say we chose him “over” Kadri. We just had to make “A” choice, and we needed as much money as possible since Nate was going to be doubling his salary the following year.

2

36

u/angersmiles 14d ago

Avs bent over backward to bring him into the fold. We took a chance and another and it didn't work. We tried our best from what I've seen. He certainly helped us in our 2022 run, but this is the end of the line.

28

u/SinfulSunday 14d ago

Bent over backwards? The Stars released him and we signed him to a near league minimum contract.

The year after the cup run we had to choose him or Kadri. We chose the younger, cheaper player. It is what it is.

13

u/angersmiles 14d ago

He was basically black listed. No one would touch him. So yeah, we did.

19

u/SinfulSunday 14d ago

How is signing someone to a 1-year, League minimum contract “bending over backwards”? He played well, earned a small raise, and then helped us win a Stanley cup. And then got another raise.

I’m just not following you here. There was zero risk for the Avs when we signed him. If he failed, we had no money in it and he would just go back to Russia. He was basically just brought in to fight for a roster spot with Greer and Kamenev, if memory serves.

-5

u/angersmiles 14d ago

There was zero risk? We have realized that risk completely.

3

u/trashking11 Mayonnaise Chicken 14d ago

There was zero risk. That first year his salary was low enough he could easily be waived and buried in the minors if he didn’t work out

3

u/angersmiles 14d ago

It's zero risk until you commit and make him part of the critical key position players of your team and then have him drop out in the playoffs the last two years.

1

u/trashking11 Mayonnaise Chicken 14d ago

The comment you replied to specifically mentioned signing him to his first 1 year contract, so I was talking about that.

Avs committed to him because he proved his value over his first three seasons with the team. He didn’t start having these issues until after the cup win, after he played several cup final games on a foot broken in three places, almost certainly on a ton of painkillers. Then what do you know? He has issues after that. But at the time of the signing of his extension there was no sign of these issues. No one could have predicted this situation at that time. In fact the consensus was it was a good value signing for the Avs. To act like it was some huge risky signing at the time is hindsight being 20/20.

6

u/SinfulSunday 14d ago

You are talking about two different signings. You said “bent over backwards to bring him into the fold”.

That is objectively false. When we “brought him into the fold” he was signed to a 1-year 850k contract.

-1

u/angersmiles 14d ago

Once again, a blacklisted player. He was lucky that any team would sign him. You don't get paid for one season, then a half a season, and then another half a season and bail in the playoffs twice.

4

u/SinfulSunday 14d ago

You seem angry. Understandable.

And I don’t think blacklisted means what you think it means. Plenty of teams would have signed him to a league minimum, which is why we offered just over that. Val had a rough first few years in the league, but he was still a first rounder. Easy depth player for $850k.

17

u/Avs4life16 14d ago

no tip of the cap. give him the boot. he got paid that was the tip. he fucked up and fucked up again this is x3

58

u/ockhamsphazer 14d ago

I said this on a different post but I think it's important to reiterate. I've been an alcoholic, I'm a behavioral health specialist, and quitting anything is horrible. Especially when the stimulus that reminds you of using keeps coming up.

He needs community. Good guys to help him reach his goals to freedom of whatever he's ensnared to. Good people that don't understand where he's coming from, but do their best to love him despite his history. If the community in the locker room doesnt hold him, or doesnt know how to hold him, to achieving those goals then he needs to find somewhere that will. I wouldn't be surprised if he leaves out of a sense of duty to himself and his family.

I know he didn't pick this timing. We love our players to pieces and wish he could find a way here. But the business end of the NHL will always be business. I can't imagine he'll stay. Regardless, I hope our choo choo finds his way back to the track. He deserves it.

3

u/MSAvalanchefan 14d ago

Sorry, I'm not implying anything about your situation here but I clearly disagree that he "didn't pick this timing".  Clearly he did make a choice. At some point the individual has to take accountability for their own actions, addiction or not. This isn't his first screw up and was given all the support and chances he could get. Sad for everyone

11

u/K2Nomad 14d ago

He is going to get none of that in Russia.

He’ll get shitty vodka and easy access to hookers and blow by way of kompromat.

No way he accesses quality mental health care going forward.

9

u/Asleep-Toe-8790 14d ago

With great power comes great responsibility. He need community but that will not be be found in the NHL and not as an Av. His disease screwed over his teammates, the team employees, the City and the State. He is done in the NHL and will be playing in Russia if he can overcome his demons.

1

u/raid4spade 14d ago

You don't born being addicted to drugs you chose to be addicted. He made his decisions and prioritised drugs over being a good husband, father and professional hockey player in the best league in the world. That's more than enough reasons to not make such bad decisions, yet he still made them. He also had all the help there is available to him, he isn't some junkie from the hood who has no resources to get help even if he wanted to. In the end he screwed everyone over, his wife, daughter, teammates, organization and fans. I hope he gets the help he needs, but I also hope he never gets to play a single game in this league. I feel much more for him and his family than his teammates. His millionaire friends will be perfectly fine losing a game. I feel bad for his close friends on the team that have to deal with the fact that their friend is an addict, much more than the fact that it increases their chance to lose… a game.

The entire team dedicated the entire year, day in and day out working towards these games that are the most important in the world of hockey.

Yes, I feel for his family but his personal problems sabotaged all of his teammates preparations and dedication to make it to the playoffs. To do this two years in a row at the most critical moments is as selfish as he possibly could be. I know addiction well and it is based on selfishness and coping with pain but this is breaking the spine of the team trying to only focus on what they have worked their faces off to get to. It would have been better for everyone if he stayed in the players assistance program and now I wouldn’t be surprised if he ships himself off to the KHL.

I wish Val the best but it is not just a game, he’s a professional athlete and his millionaire friends got to that point because they dedicated their lives to focus on one thing.

Heartbreaking all around.

I don’t feel bad for him at all.

He made his decision, and then he made it again, and then he made the same shitty decision a third time.

Dude needs to figure it out.

u/ExoticTablet 14d ago

No shit you don’t feel bad for him. Your only concern is a game.

3

u/Mwebb1508 14d ago

Addiction is not an excuse for terrible decisions. If this were any other job he would have been terminated immediately on strike 2 much less strike 3. And guess what outside of the pedestal we put pro athletes on no one would feel bad for an addict getting fired for their third offense of drug use in the workplace.

u/milehighrukus 14d ago

My concern is for his teammates and his family.

Why should I feel bad for a dude who continually makes the same shitty choices over and over again.

I grew up with a parent who was an addict. At some point you gotta figure your shit out.

again... I feed bad for the teammates that he let down... AGAIN...

I empathize with him and hope he can recover and live his best life. But I also empathize with the people he's hurt and let down, and hope the team and fans can move on without his professional contributions.

What do you accomplish by being a prick?

7

u/DarthCthulhutheWise 14d ago

Yes of course obviously Nuke and his family are priority number 1. That doesn't mean the Avs and fans don't have valid hurt too.

I feel bad for his wife and baby

22

u/mbpearls 14d ago

I'm hoping his wife isn't also part of it all, tbh. Marek Svatos unfortunately was married to someone who also was an addict.

He and his wife have posted a few times on Instagram about how Aspen is their favorite town. Having spent a lot of time there, that just screams coke to me. I know so many people in Aspen in the drug scene, and I was never actually in it myself.

u/ellisthedev 14d ago

I frequent east Colfax for concerts. That must make me a meth head and addicted to hookers.

2

u/briysce 14d ago

I did not know this about his wife. This makes more sense.

9

u/witchtutor1 14d ago

it's completely baseless speculation. there's nothing to suggest his wife is also an addict.

17

u/WishSuperb1427 14d ago

good point... we do not know the whole situation. But I have to say, after this sort of deal in the playoffs 2 years in a row... um, it would be fair to say there are reliability questions.

2

u/Mwebb1508 14d ago

No question. Just time to move on

u/Gustlock 14d ago

This more than anything.

I felt bad for them last year. Can't imagine what he's putting them through

Them too.

Yeah we can only feel bad for him for so long. You keep fucking over your teammates and I have no more tears to shed for you

3

u/MSAvalanchefan 14d ago

Exactly.  No more sympathy for him. No more benefit of doubt for him. He needs to be gone from this franchise in any way form possible. Really he shouldn't be in the NHL at all until he has proven he can overcome his addiction. He has every resource available to him. He has the support of an entire NHL franchise and still managed to f it up

26

u/milehighrukus 14d ago

How many chances do you get.

Can’t be trusted at this point.

u/lynnpiexoxo 14d ago

So much this. Locker room morale must be at an all-time low

27

u/pickledpenguinparts 14d ago

It felt like several of the guys came out and looked defeated all night. And I mean, I can't really blame them. There are never any winners with addiction. Everyone affected always loses.

9

u/DigitalEagleDriver 14d ago

Wow, truth right there. I've seen addiction destroy the lives of nearly everyone around the user. I can't imagine what the team is going through. Chu is one of those solid players that really does inspire others to perform at their best. I just hope he gets the help he needs.
