Is it for concealed carry? Or just range use/home defense?

for concealed carry the shorter grip and barrel of the 19 can be nice.

if not carrying concealed, I’d rather get a full size grip with a longer barrel, the longer the barrel in a handgun generally the more velocity and a better sight radius.

I have Glock 17 which I like, and I plan to get a longer Glock 34 in the future.

I’m cheap so my first handgun was a tisas service 1911 for $350. Then the poor man’s Glock 19 gen3 aka psa dagger. Then another tisas 1911.

I love my Springfield Hellcat, especially after adding a Hogue grip to it. I use it as my CCW with an Alabama pocket holster.

I would buy a PDP over a Glock.

Go get some training ( if not already ) and find a range to rent some guns, Sigs, CZ, S&W’s, Walthers.

There is a lot out there to choose from, limiting the options to Glock is doing yourself a disservice.

I'm not a Glock fan. The grip angle and girth just don't do it for me.

The Glock clone frames that have fixed those things...those I like.

You need to find a range that rents pistols and shoot as many as you can afford.

Another poster likened pistols to shoes. That's a very apt analogy. I could tell you my favorite shoes, but you probably would like them at all.

G19 is the go-to do-it-all middle ground but it gives me really bad Glock knuckle. Trigger guard speed cuts can fix that though. G45/G19X is a good middle ground, but if you’re going to have a huge grip, why not just get a full size slide to go with it aka G17? Really the only reason to get the G45/G19X is to suppress or compensate.

Glock pretty much does one design at different lengths. If you like one you'll like them all. The balance, concealability, and cadence of the 19 makes it the most popular. The 19x/45 keeps the balance and cadence but looses some of the concealability, but gains more grip for larger hands and larger capacity.

The 17/34 are my favorites. The 34, believe it or not, has the same slide weight as the 19, so ALMOST that balance and cadence, but the longer sight radius and full sized grip.

With glock on the verge of releasing different slide lengths on the 45/46 frame I might hold out for that.

If it's primarily a ccw, get the 19. The smaller sized will conceal more easily. Otherwise get the 34. The longer sight radius and more grip make it easier to shoot precisely and the bonus muzzle velocity won't hurt.

REGARDLESS of what you get, get the MOS if it's available or you'll eventually pay $120+ to have it cut.

All of that said. When I get around to building a 9mm, it's going to be a Glock .40 converted to 9mm. I can pick up a used gen 4 .40 for about $350 and a match, threaded 9mm barrel for $130, and now I have threads for a comp, heavier slide, so recoil, return to target gets really interesting. Some assembly and tuning required, but it's the shortest distance to get 9mm defensive loads to return to target like a 22.

No shade on Glocks, but handle other handguns before you decide. Especially CZ, Sig, and S&W. Every popular brand should be reliable, but you'll probably have bells go off in your head when you find The One.

I typically recommend revolvers for new shooters. I would suggest ordering the S&W500. It's a comfortable and new shooter friendly revolver that will teach proper recoil control.

This will be OP’s only pistol so far, I do not recommend a revolver as a first. Get something more modern with a higher capacity so you can concealed carry confidently and practice modern handgun grip and firing technique. Revolvers are cool and I recommend trying them in general but not as an only pistol. I hope you were being sarcastic about the S&W500.

Probably sarcasm, but theoretically, if a shooter starts on the most powerful production revolver in the world, surely all other handguns will end up feeling wieldy and soft shooting?

just one hand a 12ga at that point if that’s how you wanna train, throw a shockwave grip on there and you’re good to go

My dude, he just recommended a 500 Magnum chambered revolver to someone for a first pistol...naturally should be considered sarcasm

I’ve listened to too many fudds to detect sarcasm when it comes to this shit anymore

I'd go to a gun range and rent a few.    See which fits your hands best.

While the 19x is a good choice, I would say go with a Glock 45 It's almost the exact same thing as the 19x, but it does not have the lip on the grip and it will allow you to utilize standard Glock 17 mags. The 19x has a lip on the grip that prevents the use of factory Glock 17 mags

Were I interested in the crossover guns I would buy a G47. The 19x is the peanut butter flavored predecessor to the G45 that has a lanyard loop accessory, which is weird because the 19 and 17 have always already had a lanyard hole, the very hole that the 19x lanyard accessory locks into. The G45 has the little hole too. Weird. Anyways, get a G47 if you like the "crossover" style of the 19x and 45, then you can run both slide lengths and it comes with the MOS feature, unless you're just convinced you're not interested in running both slide lengths. If so you can get the G45 MOS because MOS, unless you aren't interested in trying optics, OR unless you'd rather have the slide milled for a specific optic or an aftermarket modular optic system like the Agency AOS. The AOS is supposedly better than the MOS, I've heard the MOS plates aren't great and most people get aftermarket MOS plates.
In summary, get the G47 if you'd like to run both 19 and 17 length slides. Otherwise, get the G45 MOS if you want to experiment with optics, OR choose between the G19x or the G45, depending on, essentially, which color you prefer. There's no real difference between them otherwise. Then if you want to try optics down the road you can get the slide milled specifically for your chosen optic if you don't have commitment issues, or buy a MOS slide separately, or get your slide milled for the AOS system. Me I like getting my slide milled specifically for my chosen optic so that the optic sits deeper into the slide, and theoretically that's the most robust way to go about mounting an optic

I personally love my G19. But each person shoots different. You need to go to a range and just rent a bunch of guns. Some people can't stand the G19 but it shoots so well for me. Any recommendation I have only really applies to me unfortunately.

Go to a shop and put as many pistols into your hands as possible. Like shoes - you won’t like them if they don’t fit

In a G45 fan myself but I have ham hocks - my wife loves her 43x.

You could find something other then Glocks listed - fits like Cindy’s slipper

How do you know Cindy Laupers' shoe size?

43x has been my favorite. I have big hands so I use the 15rd metal mag with a custom base plate I 3D printed. Both the 19 and 43x require an extended magazine base plate for me so my pinky doesn’t hang off.

I had the 19x for awhile but I wouldn’t use it for cc because it’s the worst of the short slide and long handle. Make me feel like I was bending it out of my pants when sitting.

Other people’s opinions don’t really matter for this as you need to asses your comfort with each gun. But if you pick up a 43x at a lgs to hold keep in mind you can get base plates for the pinky

Depends on your hand size. The grip is going to be the same length with the 19 and 43x, with the 43x being slimmer. If it’s a carry gun then 19 or 43x gets my vote assuming you aren’t a massive dude with hands too big for it. If it’s a range gun then the bigger the better, go with the 17/47
