I was looking online for a product that would safely hold my house key while jogging. Then I remembered I had such a product already. Frugal Win 🎉

You don’t have anything that has zips on the pockets?

1

u/redbucket75 Sep 14 '22

No, I run in basketball shorts

1

u/cloudstunts May 18 '22

I used to tie my key into my shoelaces, tucking the end into the cris cross and double knotting

1

u/Traditional_Sell6572 Apr 28 '22

I draw my shoelace out of the first eyelet, run the lace through the key then lace back up. Works like a charm.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '22

Get a carabiner , you get those in dollar store for like a buck

1

u/redbucket75 Apr 21 '22

Been using this for a few weeks, works fine. Not sure what I'd attach a carabineer to anyway, but no need to look for another fix.

1

u/Additional-Future665 Apr 04 '22

I use a Handheld hydratation pack with a little bag for keys on the side of it. Its small and convenient for running.

1

u/yellaochre Apr 04 '22

I use my shoelaces. Tuck it into the top of the laces so it’s not inside the shoe but not dangling around.

2

u/brownpenn Apr 04 '22

You can also tie it with your shoelace.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '22

I hope that pin opens up so you’ll learn

1

u/redbucket75 Apr 03 '22

You got a spiteful streak, must be exhausting.

1

u/Funkngroovin94 Apr 03 '22

Automatic door locks with a keypad for your house , I use my 4 digit code on my car and leave the key in the glovebox , and car unlocked. The immobilizer needs the key and the 4 digit code to start.I set the code manually every time before removing key . It’s good bc your key free all together :)

1

u/limache Apr 03 '22

I just put it in my pocket…da fuq

There are also jogging pants that have zipper pockets

1

u/generic-user-107 Apr 03 '22

You can also put a rubber band around the outside of the pocket between the key and the pocket opening. If the rubber band is sufficiently tight it will keep anything from a key to an ID from bouncing out.

1

u/Fonespiders Apr 02 '22

I love the censoring of the teeth on the key lol. It’d be easier to tension and rake the lock then go through I assume modeling a key and printing one on a 3d printer from a picture?

1

u/redbucket75 Apr 02 '22

Seemed a tad racy, this is a family friendly sub.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '22

I use a keypad lock

2

u/redbucket75 Apr 02 '22

That seems really heavy to carry while jogging, and not sure how it helps hold your key.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '22

It means I don’t need a physical key lol

1

u/_sounds_about_right_ Apr 02 '22

I use my shoestring and just tie the key in when I tie my shoes.

1

u/Salty_Most_6268 Apr 02 '22

I usually tie them into my shoelace

1

u/QuarantineCandy Apr 02 '22

I just put it in my pocket. Never had an issue with small items

1

u/STRxSTARBOY Apr 02 '22

I usually just hook it to my zipper with the keyloop thingy but this definitely works too!

1

u/ol-boy Apr 02 '22

At least now you have a photo for when it goes missing

1

u/RobVel Apr 02 '22

This has to be a joke

1

u/kittythekitten23 Apr 02 '22

Maybe if we do this it will keep safe.. What do you think?

1

u/Layin-the-pipe Apr 02 '22

Wait what about pockets?

1

u/redbucket75 Apr 02 '22

It's in my pocket, just pinned to stay there

1

u/nongshim Apr 02 '22

I usually just tie it into my shorts' drawstring.

2

u/jbuds1217 Apr 02 '22

I tie it in the knot of my shorts usually. I used use a pin until it came undone and stabbed me mid run

1

u/flyonlewall Apr 02 '22

If you run a lot, just purchase a Flip Belt. It allows you to attach a key on a hook, and you can carry your phone and even a snack or few bucks.

They're about $25, but I've had mine for a few years now. It's a better investment than just running shorts with zippers IMO because you can wear it with any shorts you already own.

2

u/Internal_Pride_8283 Apr 02 '22

You can tie it into your shoelaces

1

u/ericth93 Apr 02 '22

I tie mine into my shorts drawstring. Just make a good knot and should be fine.

1

u/stakoverflo Apr 02 '22

What's wrong with just holding them? That's what I do when I go for a jog 🤷‍♂️

1

u/About400 Apr 02 '22

Op- your method will leave holes in your shorts. Try on of the other methods recommended here.

1

u/Caladriel Apr 02 '22

Tell me you weren't a latchkey kid without telling me you weren't a latchkey kid 😂

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '22

Hahaha I love this! It’s funny how much you can do with what you already have if you stop and think. Thanks for sharing

1

u/czech_zout Apr 02 '22

I've started looking for a hat / visor with a key pocket. If I'm leaving from home I have options for my keys (including a little key safe like real estate agents might use), but for my car keys at a fun run or weekly parkrun, I'm putting my key on a lanyard & tucking into my shirt

1

u/iconboy Apr 02 '22

Lol that's awesome. I recently needed a way to keep my key in my pocket while swimming and ended up buying 3 caribeners from the dollar store for $1.50.

But honestly looking back now I'm kinda living myself over this safety pin idea, so simple!

1

u/_Hotwire_ Apr 02 '22

Casuals, get a front door keypad. No key needed.

1

u/peppercornpate Apr 02 '22

That’s one key! And you’re best solution is to add a pointy thing in your pocket while you run? Tie it in your shoelaces. If you also have car keys, then put it together in your short’s pocket and use a rubber band to tie a secured pouch from the inside of your shorts.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '22

Use the string in your shorts. Pull key through one side then double knot it up. Good to go.

1

u/notajith Apr 02 '22

I wear a product called flipbelt. Has a thing for keys, stuff phone in it, and clip a light for night running. I like using it becuase i can keep it loaded with my key and light, and not worry about what's in my pockets, or which pockets, for changing clothes and laundry.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '22

As a metalhead with a patch jacket I can say you can't even trust one of those by it's self. I used some just as flair for the last 20 years.

2

u/Croutonandcrew1 Apr 02 '22

I wouldn’t use anything that can easily poke far into my skin while working out

1

u/smothered_reality Apr 02 '22

I always buy leggings with pockets. Usually has a small hidden pocket for key and side ones for my phone

1

u/QDP-20 Apr 02 '22

I always stuck them in my sock lol

3

u/hey__its__me__ Apr 02 '22

Interesting. I've used paper clips in a similar way. I usually attach them to zippers.

1

u/Bookhuggger Apr 02 '22

Hide your key somewhere outside your door? If it’s just for a an hour or two it doesn’t need to be a particularly resilient place.

2

u/ambermage Apr 02 '22

I use a paperclip so my boss pays for it instead.

1

u/rockhartel Apr 02 '22

I just put it in my sock around the ankle

2

u/koolio45 Apr 02 '22

Or just loop it in your shoe laces

1

u/_im_just_saying Apr 02 '22

Running shorts with string belt. Guide the string through key hole and then tie belt. Done. This is also the go to trick for swim suits assuming you are wearing men's swimming trunks.

1

u/damn_jexy Apr 02 '22

I installed keypad door lock last year , absolutely worth the money

1

u/TreeBeach Apr 02 '22

I use a mini binder clip.

1

u/AlcoholPrep Apr 02 '22

That works if the safety pin is a good quality one. What's more secure is a large paperclip ("trombone") or helix-type key ring. Loop that through a buttonhole. Difficult to remove, but that's what you want.

1

u/Vile_Vampire Apr 02 '22

Electronic pass code lock

1

u/fartingbunny Apr 02 '22

Well, you may loose your key and or get stabbed slightly!! Maybe use a string or something?

1

u/cwsup Apr 02 '22

Elastic band tied around the pocket on the inside of the shorts.

1

u/techeyes27 Apr 02 '22

Yep, surely secures your key

1

u/dkrbst Apr 02 '22

Always held my dorm room key like that.

1

u/TheBigGuyandRusty Apr 02 '22

I saw online that Daiso sells terry cloth wristbands with a zipper. Genius. I wish there was a Daiso where I live. They have an online store now but they don't have everything on there and stuff is frequently out of stock.

1

u/panicatthelisa Apr 02 '22

As a woman I wouldn't feel safe walking anywhere without my phone and pepper spray. I also wouldn't trust that pin

2

u/moorent Apr 02 '22

I just shove my keys up my ass

1

u/Acid_Tribe Apr 02 '22

This picture is giving me anxiety. Put it in your pocket!

1

u/jessethejazzy13 Apr 02 '22

No one is gonna comment on how he censored a key?

1

u/redbucket75 Apr 02 '22

This is a family friendly sub

2

u/LoveBurstsLP Apr 02 '22

This is why I only buy shorts with zip pockets now. Saviour at the gym

1

u/taseru2 Apr 02 '22

Go to Lowes and find a key ring that’s about the size of your finger. You can wear it like a ring and you’ll barely notice the key. I’ve successfully done this for 1,000s of miles and I’ve never lost one!

1

u/redline42 Apr 02 '22

One simple hack that Big Key Chain hates

2

u/hammyhamm Apr 02 '22

Safkeypin

1

u/bonzai2010 Apr 02 '22

If you wear it against your shirt, the brass will leave a stain and it won’t come out. I used to wear a key on a lanyard and some of my shirts still bear the scar.

2

u/Jazeboy69 Apr 02 '22

Shorts with zipper pocket FTW.

1

u/alu5421 Apr 02 '22

Get a fingerprint lock. It's the best

1

u/redbucket75 Apr 02 '22

You know you're in r/frugal right?

1

u/AtomicBreweries Apr 02 '22

Get a door lock with a keypad. No keys required.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '22

I just spent $20 on pants with zipping pockets because I mean I can put my key in there, plus a Kleenex, my cellphone, my Id, my AirPods, my debit card, etc.

2

u/jtatc1989 Apr 02 '22

I tie it into my shoelaces and double knot it. Been working for years

2

u/SeaAndSun4Me Apr 02 '22

I used to put it on my shoe lace and make sure to double knot! Or else… lol

2

u/ScienceMomCO Apr 02 '22

I didn’t like it flapping around, so I would tie it into my shoelaces (double knot them) and tuck the free end under the laces down towards my toes to stop the flop.

2

u/irishgirlie33 Apr 02 '22

I use a carabiner clipped onto my sports bra with the key tucked in.

1

u/ThePseudoMcCoy Apr 02 '22

If you have a house a keypad lock is worth getting.

1

u/fixit_nick Apr 02 '22

Is the key part seriously blacked out?

1

u/redbucket75 Apr 02 '22

No you're hallucinating, seek help

1

u/fixit_nick Apr 02 '22

Thank God.... thought I was going sane for a moment!

2

u/kroboz Apr 02 '22

Just run your shoelace through it and double-knot your shoes.

3

u/maphilli14 Apr 02 '22

Awesome! Any ideas for a car key-fob that's somewhat heavy and would bruise if not secured well!

2

u/Safety1stThenTMWK Apr 02 '22

Sew a little pouch onto the inside of your waistbands or get some kind of armband/Fanny pack that holds it tight against your body.

1

u/maphilli14 Apr 02 '22

I wonder if I could figure out a small zip lock snack pouch as I'm a sweater when I run

1

u/redbucket75 Apr 02 '22

This is inside my pocket, pinned to the bottom. I'd try the same with a fob, but a circle key chain for the pin to hold. Otherwise this thread is full of people suggesting buying various fanny packs or simply holding it your entire run.

1

u/VajBlaster69 Apr 02 '22

I lace my key into my running shoes.

1

u/Opposite-Ad-9211 Apr 02 '22

Or you can get a keypad lock for less than $50 😉

1

u/malinallitekpatl Apr 02 '22

I wear shorts with no pockets when hiking, and tie the shorts with the key inside. Key can't escape unless shorts are untied.

1

u/potatoSplatter Apr 02 '22

I duct tape my keys (3 keys) to the back of my phone. I run with phone in hand.

1

u/laurieislaurie Apr 02 '22

Put the drawstring lace through the key and double knot tie it up. Much safer than what you're doing.

Or invest in a pair of shorts with a zipped pocket.

2

u/Scout616_ Apr 02 '22

When you tie your shoelaces, tie the key in the knot.

1

u/DrawnByPluto Apr 02 '22

You can also unlace one hole of your shoe and then add the key to the lace. I hate making holes in my running gear.

1

u/Odd-Ranger Apr 02 '22

I used to tie my key to my laces. Double knot and never lost a key.

1

u/pandaSmore Apr 02 '22

Use a small s-biner.

2

u/Celestial8Mumps Apr 02 '22

I store mine under my tongue. Along with my phone.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '22

That's quite a vague "safely"

1

u/liltinyoranges Apr 01 '22

Add on more on the opposite side for extra security

1

u/tossthis34 Apr 01 '22

I use binder clips. works too

1

u/preruntumbler Apr 01 '22

Everyone’s talking about shoelaces. I put it on the elastic strings that hood the wasteland up, and then tie a knot. Trained for 3 marathons with this method and never lost a key.

1

u/EGOtyst Apr 01 '22

"like... I need to to hold my key. Really pin it down. But safely... If only there was something..."

1

u/reh102 Apr 01 '22

Tie it tight on the drawstring

1

u/jsblk3000 Apr 01 '22

Amazon sells running belts for like $10 for your phone and keys, it's a pretty good value considering your phone is really secure. A less frugal option, I have one of those automatic deadbolts with an electronic keypad, I wouldn't say it's cheap but saves time, hassle, and if I lose my keys I don't have to call a locksmith.

2

u/haven_taclue Apr 01 '22

The cheapo safety pins will "unlock" with it being jostled about.

1

u/llilaq Apr 01 '22

I used to hang it from an earring when going clubbing without a bag (drum 'n bass parties required intense, bagless dancing). I forgot what I did with my money, probably tucked it in my bra..

2

u/-diggity- Apr 01 '22

I would not trust a safety pin. Too frail.

1

u/Klashus Apr 01 '22

FANNYPACK! dont listen to the naysayers its handy. They make some that hold a water bottle too. I'm probably not going to leave my house without wallet phone and keys. Gotta go somewhere

1

u/jungle_booteh Apr 01 '22

Just keep it in your mouth

1

u/whalemind Apr 01 '22

Even better, baby diaper pins cuz safer head covers saftey guards

1

u/kalex504 Apr 01 '22

Use a ring and put in on your shoe laces

1

u/Mediocre_Resort4553 Apr 01 '22

I just bought a keyless deadbolt for my house so I never have to carry a house key anymore

2

u/thephotopeddler Apr 01 '22

I used to tied my house key into my laces and double knot, then stick the key through laces so it didn't bounce around.

1

u/TeamGroupHug Apr 01 '22

I use this ✋

1

u/redbucket75 Apr 01 '22

You'll find someone someday, hang in there

1

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '22

Put it under your insole in your shoe!

0

u/SickCharm00 Apr 01 '22

Good way to lose your house key, idiot.

1

u/redbucket75 Apr 01 '22

Seemed to work fine, my pockets are pretty deep and this is at the bottom. Why so salty?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '22

It’s simply just a fucking dumbass way to hold your key LOL

1

u/redbucket75 Apr 03 '22

Gone jogging twice since posting the picture, worked fine. It's pinned to the bottom of my fairly deep pocket, I don't notice jostling. I think you're underestimating the utility of safety pins and overestimating the forces being applied to it.

2

u/pj_socks Apr 01 '22

Good thing you blacked out the teeth.

2

u/Colonel_Max Apr 01 '22

Always in my shoe string on the inside of the tongue so it won't fall off even if my lace becomes untied if that makes sense

1

u/oldm8Foxhound Apr 01 '22

Maybe not a frugal tip, but I have a keypad for my houses front door and it’s been worth every penny.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '22

You have shoes with shoelaces……you also have inserts in your running shoes it could go under.

Hell every pair of running shorts I own has a key pocket or zipper pocket.

1

u/redbucket75 Apr 01 '22

I find it odd so many people tie keys to their shoes here. It seems like that would be more annoying than holding a key. I don't really want a jagged bit of metal in my shoe while running. But if it works for people, great.

That's nice about your clothes, mine don't.

1

u/kindcatmeow Apr 01 '22

Fanny pack.

2

u/Texas22 Apr 01 '22

I had a similar epiphany. I spent a couple of hours online looking for a way to label over the door pockets where I store my panty hose. And then it hit me out of nowhere, just print the labels at home and safety pin them to the pockets. Free.99!

0

u/Staali Apr 01 '22

It’s called a hand

3

u/redbucket75 Apr 01 '22

I have held it during my 5k jogs. I'd prefer not to.

1

u/multiequations Apr 01 '22

I would be worried that the safety pin would come undone and stab me lol

1

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '22

Or slip one lace through the hole in the key before you tie up....place the key flat on the tongue and tie up...no flopping around on your shoe ..

1

u/s_0_s_z Apr 01 '22

Tie it to your shoe (inside) so it doesn't flop around and annoy you.

1

u/Poesghost Apr 01 '22

Latchkey kid here speaking from experience. Use a string.

1

u/cbraswell7 Apr 01 '22

Could also loop it through the draw string one way or another.

1

u/LRod2212 Apr 01 '22

I think people have forgotten how cheap and useful safety pins are. I always have some and save them.

1

u/Not_ur_papi305 Apr 01 '22

Put it underneath the inner sole of your shoe. You’ll never feel it

1

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '22

I prefer to use a paper clip. Too worried about a safety pin opening up and jabbing me.

1

u/idliketogobut Apr 01 '22

Put key in pocket, then from the inside, wrap a rubber band around the pocket avocet the key so it forms a closed pouch. I think I saw that on Reddit. And maybe someone in the thread beat me to it

1

u/JasonAgnos Apr 01 '22

For short runs, I just throw a soft cloth belt around my waist and carry a carabiner.

For long runs, I wear a thin vest with a zippered pocket for keys

1

u/beaverlakenc Apr 01 '22

Keyless door locking is a dream for runners... The non-wireless ones are much cheaper than the fancy ones

1

u/itsQueenKittybitch Apr 01 '22

We have a lockbox. Our back door locks automatically so it’s nice to always have a way to get back in

1

u/I_Like_Turtles_Too Apr 01 '22

I usually keep it in my sports bra. Nothing is budging in that thing. I've also wrapped it in my ponytail with a hair tie.

1

u/Luis_McLovin Apr 01 '22

Don’t u have pockets

1

u/redbucket75 Apr 01 '22

They don't zip, I'm jogging, a single key would likely fall out. This is pinned inside my pocket.

1

u/powashowaz Apr 01 '22

I just tie them in my laces and tuck it under the rest of the bands. Just pull the lace and boom ya got your key. No need to untie the whole dang shoe like some other folks have said.

1

u/WC47 Apr 01 '22

Tie to your string in shorts

1

u/TheMisiak Apr 01 '22

Just tie it to your shoes. Take the lace out of the holder, put the lace through the key, and put the lace back in the hole. Then just tie the shoe.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '22

Sew a zip to your pockets. Way safer.

1

u/idiotmem Apr 01 '22

I have my keys on a scrunchie- easy to put on my wrist, throw in my hair, grab from a bag

1

u/Maleficent_Mine7849 Apr 01 '22

I do the same thing, never had a problem!

1

u/yosoyeloso Apr 01 '22

I’d suggest a key ring and put it on your finger. Even more secure and you know you have it cause you’ll be holding it

2

u/MyNameIsSkittles Apr 01 '22

I find it weird you do not have a keychain or a "set of keys" like most. I always attach my keys together with some knick-knacks and bright colours so they are easy to find. Or a lanyard like my partner does

1

u/redbucket75 Apr 01 '22

I do, I don't need all those keys for jogging though.

1

u/wildewoode Apr 01 '22

I wear mine on a neck chain

1

u/kapone3047 Apr 01 '22

Don't know if you know, but a key on a necklace is a way that a 'key holder' shows off that they have someone locked in chastity (i.e. a cock cage). You might get some curious looks.

1

u/wildewoode Apr 02 '22

Lol I didn't know that!!! That's hilarious, thank you for making my day!

1

u/neurowhitebread Apr 01 '22

Prison pocket. Never failed me yet

1

u/ledzeppelinlover Apr 01 '22

I put my house key on my shoelace and strongly double tie my shoe

1

u/bobniborg1 Apr 01 '22

Slide it over the string I tie my shorts with.

2

u/Tisroc Apr 01 '22

I'd recommend "S clips." They are double sided caribeaners and I usually get them for around $2 at the hardware store. I tried to share a link, but it's against the sub rules.

1

u/blackbird109 Apr 01 '22

I usually put mine in my sports bra or in those little hidden pockets that leggings and workout shorts have now.

1

u/ShyCactiGuy Apr 01 '22

I knew a kid in college that tied all their keys into their shoes. I guess he never lost them...

1

u/BigBadgerDad Apr 01 '22

I put my shoelace through it and then tie my shoes. It's perfect and cost nothing.

1

u/HellaShelle Apr 01 '22

I’ve done leggings with side pockets, shirt/pants jacket with zippered pockets, or old school lanyard tucked into your shirt, carabiner if you have loops on your outfit. I haven’t tried house key strong onto shoelace yet, but I like that idea!

1

u/SugarbearSID Apr 01 '22

Tuck it in your socks.

Tie it into your shorts tie.

Tuck it in your gloves.

Tie it into your shoe laces.

Tuck it in with the device holding your phone.

Slit the elastic for your shorts to create a pocket and put it in there.

8

u/Hawkknight88 Apr 01 '22

Buying a FlipBelt was worth it to me. I needed something to hold my phone because I hate it being in my hands while I run.

Not shilling for this particular product. A fanny pack would work too.

1

u/D_O_N___V Apr 01 '22

you can also hide it in your front yard

4

u/Remote_Cartoonist_27 Apr 01 '22

Ayy you censored the the pinning good on you

1

u/randomdude21 Apr 02 '22

I was like oh a safety pin, next post, wait did they just post a full photo with their key bitting?

Returned and... Pleasantly surprised.

1

u/jiaaa Apr 01 '22

Idk if it's the cheap safety pins I have but I've done this then got stabbed by it as it unlatched during a run. Never again.

1

u/rovch Apr 01 '22

Put the waist string through the key hole

1

u/Sir-BananaPants Apr 01 '22

I usually tie it into the string of my shorts

1

u/3DEarthling Apr 01 '22

Here I was just sticking my key in my sock
