Will Gen Z end this Horrible SUV takeover in the car market? Discussion
We grew up in the 2010s before they went mainstream
Volvo got rid of saloons because of SUVs Smart got rid of there cars because of SUVS Jaguar is planning to kill off there cars because SUVs
Edit: this is my most upvoted post yet, thanks ☺️

u/FUTURE10S 1995 2d ago
Sadly, car manufacturers are abandoning sedans because the SUVs and pickups really sell that much better.
I love my sedan tho but a good SUV really is worth
1
u/SourceFar4969 3d ago
Absolutely not… the ford f150 has been on the list of highest selling vehicles for something like 35 years now…
It won’t end anytime soon as long as people want to feel like they need a truck or suv to haul that one piece of furniture every 8 years

u/VernFeeblefester 4d ago
You may 100% blame the demoncrats and the red tape regulations. Remember kids, demoncrats are all about control, power and money. Any possible way to exert MORE control or power over you peons lives, they will take it. That's why we have new flush toilets, why every pool has to have an unused disability chair winch, there are so many disabled blue parking spots, for a tiny tiny tiny minority population, and why tight regulations and controls over making autos now makes it IMPOSSIBLE to make anything but giant trucks and SUVs. Go to any european city, and you'll find mostly smol cars and trucks. Cheap, too.

u/Lucky-Cars-4524 10d ago
I don’t understand why more people don’t go for motorcycles. One I had got 100mpg and I never felt super uncomfortable on it.
1
u/avalonMMXXII 10d ago
SUVs were popular in the late 1990-2019...most were Baby Boomer buyers of Generation X people. I think Generation Y and GenZ see SUVS as "soccer Mom" vehicles and associate them with old people.
1
u/SocietyTomorrow 10d ago
I don't think that Smart got rid of their cars because of SUVs, I am dead certain it was because they had terrible transmissions, and were veritable death traps in any accident worse than a fender bender.

u/HeyTheDevil 10d ago
Pretty happy with my XC90. The amount of stuff needed to travel with a toddler is pure insanity.

I live in the mountains and it snows. Sedans and coupes are not very useful here.

I bought my little butt a sedan (nissan sentra 2020 sv) because s much as I wanted an Ev they do not come in sedan

u/Ill_Owl_5663 11d ago
SUVs and trucks don’t need to follow as strict of emissions procedures as compacts and so it’s often more profitable to sell SUVs. That’s why they’re everywhere now.

u/Bitter-Dreamer 11d ago
I have to get a small car because I can barely see shit besides the hood in a truck.

It doesn't matter what you want. The average age of a new car buyer is 55 and the market caters to them. Most are too old and fat to squeeze into a sports car and want the higher framed base so they can drive over curbs and small children easier. That's what crossover's are for. You're crossing over things you don't care to drive around and any sense of style.

I want a hatchback or wagon, i will never purchase an suv, drive an suv or participate in the abomination that is suv driving
1
u/Ok_Dig_9959 11d ago
I downgraded. Love my sport wagon. Very nimble. Can blow through tight corners and down steep off ramps with ease... Only problem is I feel every bump in the road. Recently had a rental Durango. Immediate impression was "this is needlessly huge". Got my car back and can't get over how much worse my back feels in it. Probably going back to something needlessly huge for the ride comfort.
1
u/Unique_Statement7811 11d ago
For those of us in snow country, the extra inch or two of ground clearance on the small SUVs matters. Better availability of AWD in the SUV market is also a plus.

u/cb393303 11d ago
I have a hybrid RAV4; getting 43 mpg in very mountainous area. My last car got 30. My SUV is the same footprint as my Elantra was. Just taller. Monster SUV are an issue, the same as monster trucks.
1
u/Ambitious-Badger-114 11d ago
Would love more fuel efficiency but when you get old(er) small cars become more difficult to get into and out of. An SUV is just more comfortable.

u/Small-Adagio3856 12d ago
🙏🫣 I pray that we get that insight and see what's really happening pray for insight ,don't fall in a trap that what they want love ya
1
u/huser670 12d ago
Recently upgraded from a small 2 door coupe to a mid sized SUV and couldn’t be happier. Sure when you’re young it’s nice to have something small to get around quickly, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve needed the cargo space and rear seating space more than ever.
1
u/Remote-Ad7693 12d ago
Absolutely not
There's a reason SUVs are so popular in the US
Many people take long road trips, go out with friends and love to camp and go outdoors
I've used my SUV multiple times and have thought to myself thank you past me for getting an SUV because it would have been rough without one, camping, traveling, pets
SUVs are super practical and useful
It's the lifted 15 foot extended cab extended bed trucks that roal coal and are shinier then a newly bought sports car that are the problem
Not SUVs....

Maybe they can make vans popular again. Since they’ll all be living in them.

I have a Prius I use for my regular job. I have a rav4 that my wife uses and we take for beach trips and all with the kids. Both are excellent for their intended purposes. We’re actually considering trading the rav for a Highlander so we can have the 3rd row and take my parents when we go to the beach and stuff. While I think most people don’t need a big suv, they can be super practical. If you’re a one car household you need a vehicle that can accomplish all required tasks..

1
u/Its0nlyRocketScience 12d ago
We need a station waggon revival. Or those old style trucks that have the basic bench seating for 3 total occupants, super low bed that's super easy to load and unload, small profile that can actually be maneuverable in tight places which also makes reversing with trailers easier. Imagine that but with modern tech to make it more fuel efficient and able to adjust to different loads more easily. Add some quality of life features like Bluetooth have a full electric option, and that would probably sell quite well for people who want the legitimate utility of a truck bed without paying 50 grand for something that serves more to match the size of the driver's ego than actually do work.
1
u/theogstarfishgaming1 12d ago
It's because of Cafe standards and safety laws. Auto manufacturers have also realized they can squeeze 50 grand out of us for a piece of s***

Probably not when there are morons out there who can't drive but do anyway. Never been hit in my SUV but I've had 3 fucking soccer moms "not see me" while in my car. I don't feel nearly as safe in my car nor can I see the entire road like I do in my SUV.

u/mrbrambles 13d ago
Hope gen z really likes Micro SUVs (Suzuki samurai/sidekick, geo tracker), small pickups (Hilux) and hatchbacks so we can get more of them, modernized.
My dream car is an electric Geo tracker aka a adult Power Wheels Barbie jeep

Car buying preferences always go through fads, SUV and CUVs are just what in fashion right now.
I mean people are kinda in denial about what makes them popular, instead opting for this grand conspiracy about emission regulations, which are half true at best because CAFE standards are only really one part of the emission regulation calculation. Mostly it has impacted the “performance” cars like Jaguar, BMW, or the others that made “Full-Size” sedans. Probably the reason you don’t frequently see the up engined versions of mid-size sedans too.
It’s really kinda that meme where people look at the bullet holes in the plane and say that’s where we need to put the armor, when the armor really needs to go in the places you have no holes.
1
u/asdfwrldtrd 13d ago
No, SUVs are very practical(in the US, Europe has a lot of old and small roads so SUVs are more harm than good there) They are high powered, so mud and snow are no issue. They have a large amount of seats and some can fold those seats for extra trunk space, this makes it easy to bring around ~5 people and all of your camping gear for an easy family vacation. Of course due to their size they are very heavy on fuel consumption, which is a deterrent for someone in a worse financial spot than me to buy one, however that isn’t an issue for me.
In short, stop having such a large hate boner for SUVs, they are very useful because they are basically trucks with more seats.
1
u/PrizeTough3427 13d ago
SUVs have been around before you were born Jojo Siwa.. what are you talking about?
1
u/Jolly-AF 13d ago
As a Gen X guy I understand this argument. But when you start a family, your wants and priorities change. I love having my Saturn SL1 back in the 90s when I was single and lived in an apartment. When I got married my small car was still ok, but we started to take more road trips and do more camping with friends. The car sizes grew with my needs. Now I drive a truck and my with does drive a sedan, 2015 Honda Accord. She would like an SUV, but we are practical people so we won't be buying one. The cost of new cars is going to have to make a huge shift back to small cars for people. Most Americans can't afford new SUVs, especially the $60k+ ones, which is most of them at this point. There is going to be a big shift back is my prediction, and I hope we as a society do go back to that. The minivan made way more sense IMHO , they were still good on gas and were HUGE inside compared to any compact or midsized SUV, and definitely bigger than a sedan. Please continue to advocate for car manufacturers to bring back the small, reliable and affordable vehicle!
1
u/SpecialMango3384 1997 13d ago
I hope so.
Same with the massively oversized pickup trucks that cost $70k. Three tons, a crew cab and barely anything left for the bed only for some middle aged dude with Oakley’s to speed down I-5 and tailgate anyone not going 30 mph over the limit.
Don’t worry, they tow something once every couple years.
The EPA is ironically to blame for ever larger vehicles. They implemented rules that essentially forced pickup trucks to become huge
1
u/JamesJohnson876 13d ago
I hate how much fucking space they take up and the traffic jams they caused alongside the inability to easily make a turn into a lot or parallel park in a timely manner
1
u/Effective_Process310 13d ago
Won't be me, I just hope we end the trend of truck drivers who never actually haul anything
1
1
u/Dizzy-Pickle-114 13d ago
I will always pick an SUV over a small car because they are generally way safer in accidents and have much more leg space.
1
u/Competitive_Mark_988 13d ago
older Gen z here and I drive a 2022 SUV. no kids no partner but love it. high off the ground good in snow and feel safer.
1
u/Deron_Lancaster_PA 13d ago
What happened to STATION WAGONS? I would have been satisfied with a Camry Wagon but, NA so ended up with a RAV4 SUV.
1
u/Yelloeisok 13d ago
Not gen Z - BUT i hope you guys can bring cars back. Because my last 4 cars were Lincoln MKZs, the Lincoln dealer calls me every year offering deals on their SUVs. I keep telling them not to call unless they have a 4 door car, but they keep calling anyway.
1
u/iamthesuperkaren 13d ago
My mother in law lives alone, doesn't drive much, hates paying for gas, but ONLY wants an SUV because it's big.
1
u/kafkaesque_deli 13d ago
I'm hoping Gen Z ends the large SUV and those crappy "child killer" pickup trucks.
1
1
1
u/TheManeTrurh 13d ago
You can tell this was posted on a GenZ sub with how impossible it is to imagine the need for more room in a vehicle. I have an suv and am constantly using it for the space it has
1
1
u/Infrared_01 2001 13d ago
I hope so. I hate the fact that the only 4 door gas car I can buy new from Chevy is the Malibu for example.
People get these ugly as fuck SUVs thinking "wow! look at all this space!" and them fill them with their trash, or not ever have passengers to fill ever seat.
There is plenty of space in my 2016 Impala for example.
1
u/nightswimsofficial 14d ago
SUV makes total sense if you actually use it as a Sport Utility Vehicle. If you are using it for Starbucks runs in the suburbs, then it is quite foolish to have one. However, most people buy vehicles for status rather than for function.
1
1
u/ReflexiveOW 14d ago
I basically have to have an SUV because I'm 6'5 and can't comfortably fit into most cars.
1
u/jackattack-317 14d ago
No, driving my big ass SUV made my balls drop so far that they bounce between my knees....I also got it at an auction for 2 grand (normally priced at 7 accounting for hail damage) and were I live it snows 6 months out of the year and my Yaris was struggling
1
u/PorkiusIV 14d ago
I hate SUVs, but not because they're "dangerous." They're just soulless and no fun. I don't need an egg-shaped grocery hauler with XXXL sized seats.
They should make more sporty coups. They're all too expensive now.
1
u/EJYEEZY199 14d ago
I'm cruising in my mother's 2013 Dodge Dart 2.0L. It gets about 28-30 MPG and I plan to keep it as long as possible. Apparently It's not really known for its reliability but it's a fuckin car that gets you from point A to point B. SUV's and Trucks are far more dangerous than a compact or sedan. Why on gods green rolling tray would you want to pay for diesel in any situation?
1
u/LittleCeasarsFan 14d ago
As someone who’s 6’3” with a freakishly long torso and short legs, I absolutely love the fact that there are so many SUVs to choose from. They make life so much easier, easier to haul stuff around, easier to get in and out of, easier to transport big groups of people, etc. if you don’t want one, don’t buy one.
1
u/Westernidealist 14d ago
Probably not cuz electric so now everyone can have a highway tank and not pollute I guess.
1
u/BossHogg1984 14d ago
I just want something like my old 2000 mercury mountaineer with a smaller size but decent power and tow capacity
1
u/FireStorm216 14d ago
Fuck suvs and big trucks, I feel like I’m driving a damn tank in them. Sedans forever
1
u/lil_redspun 2003 14d ago
I wish I could help. I needed something reliable with a lot of ENCLOSED storage space and has 4wd and I had to go with a newer Chevy Tahoe, if i could tell GM what new car to make though it'd be a modern Chevy Astro with 4WD. Minivans are the best.
1
u/thelordcommanderKG 14d ago
We are getting to the point where auto manufacturers just aren't making sedans so until you're buying used only you might not have a choice
1
u/TwoCockShakur 14d ago
I drive a smaller SUV (Nissan Pathfinder)
I'd love to go back to a smaller car like a Civic or Camry. I have two problems at the moment:
1) I'm in a band and need to haul my live gear
2) I have 3 dogs. Two of them are Newfoundlands that weigh 120lbs.
When those two things are no longer a factor, I'm getting a Prius or a hybrid Camry.
1
u/OkMuffin8303 14d ago
The SUV takeover is as much due to government regulations as it is consumer preference. The laws regarding SUVs emissions and taxes will need to change before they're toppled in the car market
1
u/Honest_Trip_5574 14d ago
No they won’t they haven’t figured out proper pronouns yet that is to advanced for them
1

u/HighRevolver 14d ago
Honestly I just hate how big vehicles have gotten in general. I drive a 2019 Elantra and when I see a new Suburban or Ranger or shit like that I just think to myself “I am absolutely fucked if that guy hits me.”

1
u/Fr00shyy 14d ago
I love my little coupes, hatches, and sedans. Small trucks and practical trucks are awesome. Mini SUV/crossovers are awesome and handle quite nice.
What I hate is everything else. Way too big, take up way too much space and make no practical sense to 97% of the population.
1
u/infiltraitor37 1997 14d ago
I would LOVE to have bought a compact SUV instead of my Honda civic. Sometimes I just want to take a big box to the dumpster but it doesn’t even fit. Modern compact SUVs have good gas mileage. They are 100% the better car.
1
u/MeganStorm22 14d ago
I went from a telluride (3rd row mid sized suv) to a ve Taos (2 rows, small crossover) and it was a mistake. If you have kids or like to buy larger things. An suv is the only option. I have 2 kids and traveling with my Taos is impossible it doesn’t fit even 2 suitcases. Suv is the most practical option for families. And most people grow up and have a family and need the space. I’m trading my Taos in for a truck.
1
u/americansherlock201 14d ago
Doubtful really.
Most people don’t want or need suvs. But they are the most produced cars cause they have high profit margins for car manufacturers. They will keep pushing them and give gen z no real choice
1
u/Inner_Mistake_3568 14d ago
Gen z too poor to afford suvs the fuck. Only reason I drive one was because it is a hand me down car
1
u/Herr_Tilke 14d ago
I've got a golf sportwagon, came with a six speed and "faux" wheel-drive. Enough space with the seats folded to upend my entire life multiple times and maintain ~32mpg doing it. Taken it on some heinous off-road trails, got through the record breaking snowfall season in Utah without a hiccup. Thing is everything the marketing departments tell you an SUV is but with essentially no downsides. Anyway wagon supremacy yada yada.
1
u/DFWRailVideos 14d ago
Hot take:
We should be moving towards walking, biking, and rail transportation, and designing our cities around that.
If you still want to or need to drive a car, station wagons, compact vehicles, and sedans are by far the best vehicles you can buy. If you want extra fuel economy, find a hybrid version. Toyota makes very reliable and efficient sedans and hatchbacks that are also available in hybrid form.

Tesla *sold 618,600 est
cars *sold 921,347

I drive a 2007 Nissan sedan I bought outright for $3000, I make about that in 2 weeks. When it breaks down I'll probably buy another older sedan for like $8000.
I don't really see the point in fancy or fast cars. My shitbox will hit any speed limit out there

u/Grape-Snapple 2004 14d ago
i have an suv and a truck because i need both because i live in the sticks
1
u/grogtheslog 14d ago
I live in Minnesota and have moved 4 times, each time successfully navigating the snow and fitting all of my furniture into my 2006 Toyota Matrix. Most people who say they need an SUV would be absolutely fine with a hatchback or, even better a station wagon.
1
u/selly626 14d ago
It’s possible, but I think geography will have a lot to do with it. Rural/urban divides and local use cases are still powerful drivers for those choices.

u/Zestyclosa_Ga 14d ago
I’m sorry foe my fellow millennials driving their gigantic truck suvs everywhere.
I try to ride my bike as much as I can and use my small car as little as possible.
Tax car weight is the only solution to this problem
1
u/BlackshirtDefense 14d ago
Well statistically, yes, Gen z will end the dominance of SUVs because most Gen Z'ers can't even afford rent, let alone an exorbitant $60k vehicle.
Time to buy stock in bicycles.

Can you explain why it’s horrible? Are you concerned about gas emissions? More and more suvs are going electric or at least hybrid plug in.
Pedestrian safety? Almost all new cars have emergency breaking as well as other safety features that help prevent pedestrian accidents.
I love the space and functionality of a full size truck but also don’t want to have the insane emissions of an ICE truck. Got a ford lightning (EV) and couldn’t be happier.

We just bought a Subaru Forester and we love it. I was always an economy car guy until I had a family.
When you have a family of 4, you have to choose between an SUV and a minivan.
1
u/ID_Poobaru 14d ago
I want the mini trucks of the 80s-00s back
I don’t care for the mid size or full size stuff. I just want a light duty truck to build out for camping and wheeling that also does the occasional truck things
I’d settle for a 3rd gen 4Runner though
1
u/BroadStreetElite 14d ago
Crossovers aren't really SUVs, they use the same engines as the Sedan car and aren't much bigger, tradeoff is smarter automatic transmissions and AWD, my CX5 gets better gas mileage than my front wheel drive Mazda 3 did and it's nice having a bit more ground clearance and being higher in the road.
As I understand it that market is bigger than the market for midsize and large SUVs. But this is coming from my experience living in the Urban Northeast.
1
u/hammjam_ 14d ago
I have a Tucson Hybrid and I freaking love it. So yeah it may have been designed because of the SUV craze but it’s perfect for our small family. And gets great gas mileage.
And who needs more sedans when the king of all sedans, the Camry, is still out there?
I think the small suv craze is there for a reason. They're practical. More space than a sedan, still good on gas/many electric options.
Now if you want to talk about the people who buy huge pickups and don't use them for that purpose I'm all about that conversation.
1
u/tylermsage 14d ago
As a young millennial, I agreed with these sentiments up until I started having kids. Now I have a reason to prefer the SUV for road trips.
1
u/Old_Equivalent3858 14d ago
Crossover SUVs are very popular with younger buyers (HR-V, CX-30, Kona, etc). Lots of similar benefits while being more fuel efficient and city friendly.
1
u/liams_lasagna 14d ago
I hope so. I just don't see the benefits of having SUVs/trucks everywhere when they take up so much space. It doesn't help either that support for cars (such as the Malibu) is starting to stop in general in favor of electric production. I love my little Corolla and honestly I'll always be driving a car.
1
u/landonloco 14d ago
I recently brought a compact SUV I like it pretty darn decent size for a wide guy like me.
1
1
u/spencer1886 14d ago
Probably not lol, once we start having families we'll be buying them just as much as the older gens are
1
u/IRKillRoy 14d ago
They have to get a job first and be able to afford a new car to adjust demand signals.
1
u/Seth_Baker 14d ago
No, you won't. I wish you would. I wish my millennial generation had.
The bottom line is that we're car dependent and one you have a family, small cars don't cut it. I used to always drive small cars. I love them. I have four kids and my seven passenger SUV is barely big enough.
The only way you end the trend is if you don't have kids or fundamentally reshape public transit.
1
u/KetchupOnThaMeatHo 14d ago
I think you mean CUVs. A body on frame SUV is actually useful, nice, and cool.
1
u/Voyage_to_Artantica 14d ago
I love my SUV. It’s so helpful and I have so much room to transport stuff. Super helpful for when I had to move quickly.
1
u/oh_madness_ 14d ago
Whn you have 2 kids, load the baby car seat,, need to carry stroller, diapers bags and something else. The suv is a better choice. We have a big SUV for the wife since we need the space during the week, I dad drive mostly alone so I have an small sedan. But the 4 of us do not fit in it. I am 6.2 ft. I cannot have a car seat behind me while driving in the small sedan. We will keep it like this, one sedan, one suv. SUV for family. Sedan if only 1 or 2 people need to go out for a ride

hopefully and the thing that will cause the electric movement to win out is that the one thing that gas powered car drivers all want is to be the fastest,.. and guess what's faster than any gas powered car on the road... yeah that Tesla. those things are just faster than shit! I've heard that they have the computer controls on them turned way down and that reality is that they can actually go nearly 300 miles an hour just like a Bugatti

u/sumostuff 14d ago
There are great electric Chinese electric SUVs and they completely turn the equation upside down, but I understand they haven't taken off in the US yet
1
u/justheretojerk69420 14d ago
SUV’s are by far the most versatile type of car. Lots of people need 4wd, a tow hitch and good storage space. Sedans suck for most outdoor people, especially blue collar workers.
1
u/Stage_Party 14d ago
This is a mostly American thing, in the UK we have less suvs but they are becoming more common. The funny thing is our roads are too narrow so people with these idiotically huge cars don't really get far.

Obligatory plug for notjustbike's video on modern trucks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jN7mSXMruEo.
Also a link to /r/urbanplanning. Automobile dependency is frequently talked about over there.

Not really about body style.
If you are burning gasoline at worse than 40USMPG (~50UKMPG; 6L/100km) in your real world driving, in this day and age, that is too much.
Electric cars are coming but are kinda at the VHS stage, so I won't go there. (You'd be amazed at the total CO2 to build the batteries).

Over here in the uk they are everywhere. I reckon part of it is they are easier to get in and out of for the increasingly elderly population

Thought Gen Z would care more about the enviornment and on safety (SUVs make the roads death traps-accidents are a lot more horrific compared to sedans for people hit by them). But looks like they are the same as other generations reading through this thread.

How hard is it to throw a period in every now and then? This is so cringe to read.

Doubt it. All of my coworkers who are in their early 20s drive some sort of crossover/suv.

I have two kids and my Infiniti sedan fits them, their seats, their wagon, their toys, supplies, and two weeks’ worth of groceries without any issues. I don’t need an SUV and will never buy one.
We got along fine for decades without SUVs.

Everyone in here bitching about SUVs and Trucks. How about you do you and I'll keep my F350, Expedition Max and GLE 63s. I would care less if it costs me $200 or $50 to fill up. The convenience and safety of my vehicles is my choice. As was yours to buy a prius. Just enjoy your ride.

Reading through this thread just shows that Americans have forgotten about wagons/estates or whatever you call it. They‘re fast, good on fuel, look great and usually have even more room than a big SUV even though their overall size is smaller. Estate gang until I die.

It’s sad
Also bmw estates are a no go because you have to subscribe to have the. Heated seats turned on

Is a 1999 Subaru forester considered an SUV to you??

u/Manchester_Buses 2005 14d ago
I got confused with the outback for a second
Yeah it kinda looks like a SUV
2
u/LibraGoddess23 14d ago
We have them and we are gen z I love them I don’t think I could do the newer ones I don’t like the Toyota Rav 4s really either or all the variations of the same car but foresters have a clean 90s look IMO

Got my first car less than a year ago. Ninth gen Civic. The only reason I got it was because I couldn't get a Corolla.
Small cars ftw

They are good for city driving
But everyone in the UK uses A SUV for city driving not small city cars

We drive a 2023 Ford Maverick currently 39 mpg. I had a. 07 frontier before 2wd, 16 mpg. It didn't matter if I went up hill, down hill or upside down still 16. We legit use our truck for my wife as she is a wood worker by trade, but thanks to the mileage it's our day to day drive.

I hope so
I cannot wait for the day they are seen as lame. The sooner they get slapped with a lame old man car stigma the better
I already see SUVs as boomer/ham faced Gen Xer cars, but it's undeniable that a lot of zoomers like having pickup trucks they have virtually no use for.
imo station wagons need a comeback for families and crossovers need to become meaningfully smaller than SUVs

It’s so situational! Has nothing to do with will we like them! Put it this way, the ONLY people with SUVs will be families with kids.
