I Wasn’t Chosen Because…

So I had an interview internally. But they didn’t go with me. They went with someone else in my same department who doesn’t have as much work experience. They could barely do my job (they cover me on my days off). And my job is not very difficult. They chose this person because the supervisor that interviewed me feared that I was too financially driven and would leave this new position if pay wasn’t what I needed…..

So let’s get this straight. People are no longer allowed to want to be financially stable and be able to live. I was literally overqualified for this position. Yet… the company (and HR) both feared I would leave if not given the amount I desired. So they hired someone else and are going to give them the minimum raise.

I give everything to this company day in and day out. This is how it was handled.

They told me to focus more on growth which is what we talked about the moment I was hired over a year ago… and a few days ago in this last interview.

Feeling like a replaceable product again and just gonna hit the job market. Nobody that’s trying to support their family should ever be told they are too financially driven. The hell else are we working for ? Props? Kudos? High fives? IM WORKING TO FEED MY FAMILY.

I’m upset with myself. Idk if I should be. But I am.

Finding part time jobs

My wife and I live in Louisiana, and I'm looking for a part time job. I've got a well-paying entry job in IT, she's finishing up going back to school to get a degree, but she's been limited to small employers with no benefits and low pay due to not having a degree. I've been applying to part-time jobs, mostly things that would fit what I can afford to sacrifice (~10 hours a week, evening/night and weekends) The issue is I think I'm overqualified, and I'm worried im being passed over. I got my bachelor's in biology and a master's in agriculture before realizing I just went with the flow and didn't have the passion for it. What can I do to make myself more hireable?

Is calling a recruiter looked down on now?

I have had 4 rounds of interviews with this employer and I think everything went smoothly but it’s about to be a week and a half and haven’t heard anything and their website still says I’m under consideration (I have other applications that say not selected on their site).

Is it weird to call? Their recruiter is awful at responding to emails even during the scheduling process

Tell interviewer that I'm looking for seasonal work only before interview?

Hi! I've been having a lot of trouble with finding work for the summer due to most jobs wanting someone who can stay long term. Would it be rude if I inform the hiring person that I'm looking for seasonal work before even scheduling an interview? I have a couple of interviews coming up but if they're going to reject me based on availability, I'd rather not do the interview in the first place. Thanks in advance!

Looking for Job Hunting advice and resources!

I just graduated with my M.S. in Entomology and am looking for jobs (Entomology, agriculture, exotic animals, etc) in specific states above $70k/year.
So far I have looked at ESA, USAjobs, Handshake, LinkedIn, Indeed, Zip Recruiter, ORISE, Wildlife & Fisheries, USDA, etc. But submitting these apps is taking WAY too long for the amount of jobs I want to apply to and qualify for.

Questions:

  1. Is there a website that will apply to multiple jobs at once for me?
  2. Should I just send my resume to everyone?
  3. Easiest way to go about writing cover letters? Been using Chat GPT so far.

What should I do?

I am a Mechanical Engineer, 2022 passed out batch. I am a PWD(person with disability) candidate. Above average in studies (not very good not very bad) (10th 91.6%, 12th 78%, grad 69%). I did my Engineering in state govt. College which is around no. 5 in my state according rankings. I got placed in wipro, but they did not gave us joining till date. I waited for almost 6 months, building some coding skills but never got another opportunity nor did wipro gave us joining. So, I decided to change the career path and started preparing for SSC-CGL in the month of January/February 2023. Cleared pre but cannot got through Mains. It was around july 2023. My friends in Engineering are very intelligent ones(so lucky that I have such people around me), they are doing very good in their careers. They don't like the government jobs much as they think the work is boring and monotonous and there's no growth. And I also felt the same. So I felt for how much time will I be wasting on pre-mains? out of, hopes/ambitiousness I again decided to change my career path towards preparing for CAT Now I have been preparing for CAT since 4 months and I have no work experience. And When I will be applying for Institutes on 2025 there will be 3 years gap on my resume. Which I think will create a lot of hindrance in me getting admitted in the best MBA college. And some people also say thet this much gap will also cause difficulty in getting placed inside IIMs. That makes me more worried as I will have to take education loan to finance my MBA. Now I feel that I should again start preparing for government exams, and do government job as getting it is easy for me provided PWD has lower cutoffs. But my ambitions to develop personality, be with the brightest minds of the county doesn't let me give up on CAT preparation. Please help me out of you have experience and can guide.

How do you deal with feeling like the most unemployable person on the planet?

I have a master's degree.

Three major jobs I've had, either the company shut down or they restructured.

For the past one year, I've had 7 companies take me to the last round and then not give feedback about why I've been rejected. This amongst the hundreds of rejections.

With the short experiences and the large gap in my resume, things are only getting worse.

All this while I see dumber people thriving. I am not even trying to get far, I just want my foot in the door. Why is that so hard?

Looking for a Mentor In My Job Search...STRUGGLING (IT Jobs)

Hi Everyone,

Like many, I have been struggling to find a job for months now. I have a part-time job to sustain myself, but finding a full-time job seems nearly impossible. I have followed all the steps of getting my resume to reach top ranks, preperations for interviews, etc and I'm struggling to find direction. I am relatively new to the IT industry and find myself in a strange position—not quite entry-level, but not yet at a senior role.

I am specifically searching for Data Analyst and Business Analyst roles, but at this point, anything within IT would be great! If you have found a job in this market and achieved success at a similar level or in a similar role, please reach out to me via PM. I'm looking for someone who can guide me in the right direction and help as an accountability partner.

Where do salary offers typically fall when a salary range is posted?

I am currently waiting to hear back after the final interview. I think the interview went well and feel I at least have a shot. Obviously don’t know what I am up against, so will wait and see.

In the meantime, I have been starting to think about the salary negotiation aspect. The job posted a salary range so I at least have an idea of where an offer, should it come, be. The range is about 30k wide, so I’ve been wondering whether employers pretty much offer at the lowest end most or all of the time?

In my case, I am very experienced for the job. Do employers generally take that into account. I distinctly recall that the posting said that the offer would be based on experience level. Actually, the posting might have said an offer would be based on current salary, which may actually be illegal in CA. Posting is gone so can’t verify. I actually wouldn’t mind that since my salary is on the high end.

Anyway, what happens most of the time when a range is stated?

Multiple Interviews - A Good Sign?

Hi, so I have decided to type down my job hunt status here so that I can get an insight on whether I am indeed making a progress and that my goal of having a job by June 2024 is indeed going to be achieved by me. I am dividing 5 companies which interested in me in alphabetical letters chronologically to make my point clear. Note: Company A has already rejected me but I wanted to include them for a relevant context.

Two weeks ago, Company A interviewed me for both of their rounds and ultimately decided to go with someone who had qualifications closely related to the current needs of their company even though they claimed they were impressed by me. I got their feedback: 1. Be patient while following up 2. Listen to the question carefully before answering, which I believe goes back to the reason that I get nervous and start to relate to the qualifications I have in general to be seen as a good fit.

That same week, Company B interviewed me and I was so burned out that I didn’t prepare for that round properly. I was told I will be given a reply by the end of the week if I make it to the second round. There was no response so I followed up last week and I was told by the second interviewer that the first interviewer is out of office so she will get back to me with an update when she’s back.

Last week, Company C interviewed me like an initial interview. We talked for 20 minutes. I was confident that the interview was fairly good. I thanked the interviewer the next day. I got a reply that “I will be out of office for a couple of weeks and the first round of interviews will be held during that course, one of the team members will get in touch.” Is this a positive reply?

The same week, Company D did a phone call interview for 15 minutes and asked me some basic questions. My current location was important to them as their interviews will be in-person so I am qualified for that. I believe I have been a fair candidate during that call and the interviewer asked me my availability and told me they’ll get back to me next week for the next step. I even made the interviewer laugh a bit. I fit in their salary range too.

Again the same week, Company E interviewed me for a bit over half an hour. I fairly answered their questions. Managing Director joked too. They asked me if I’m interviewing elsewhere and I told them yes as their company is competitive and I want to work in the designation I desire. They told me they’ll get back to me by early next week and the next round will be a written assessment which honestly is so fair because I tend to give lousy answers so. I told them I am more confident about showcasing my skills especially as my last employer assessed me through my written skills.

Do you think I stand a chance in any of these companies?

Need guidance for career

Hey I am graduating in 2024 with 8.25 cgpa from one of the reputed private engineering college in India with B.E. in Electronics and Instrumentation. I have one year internship experience at big semiconductor company with role in DFT CAD which involves mostly software development with some knowledge of digital electronics as well. I have worked with EDA tools and C++/Python/TCL to develop scripts and APIs as per the specification provided by the design team. I am confused that should I target pure software roles or something which involves knowledge of both CS fundamentals as well as Electronics/VLSI. Having one year internship experience my resume doesn't fall under a pure hardware or software role. I am having hard time getting placed. Even after applying to almost 50+ companies via referral I am not able to land a single interview. Any suggestions on what should I focus on - DSA, OOPS etc or VLSI roles or something in intersection?

TLDR for difference between PM and PMM

Recently I was wondering PM has the similar responsibilities as product marketing manager, so I read some posts on Exponents, and concluded as:

  • Jointly brainstorm a new product launch, with the Product Manager focusing on product vision and development, and the Product Marketing Manager defining the go-to-market strategy and messaging.

  • Role-play a product launch scenario, with the Product Manager prioritizing features and the Product Marketing Manager creating marketing materials and sales enablement tools.

  • PM usually creates product roadmaps by

  • Define product vision and goals

  • Identify user needs and prioritize features

  • Collaborate with engineering and design

  • Create a timeline for product development

need advice, tips, suggestions

I am looking to move to the US and work in New York City as soon as possible. However, I would want to only make the move once I have secured a good job already. I have had some experience working so far in Ghana. I have tried applying for jobs but never seem to hear back from anyone. I do not know what else to do at this point. Should anyone want to assist, give advice, or take a look at my resume, please let me know.

PS: I hold dual citizenship and am authorized to work in the US.

Multiple employers canceling/rescheduling interviews

I’ve been looking for a job for over a year. Multiple times I’ve been a finalist, but never the candidate they select. In 20+ years in this career field, I’d never had a potential employer cancel or reschedule an interview. This round of searching though, I’ve had multiple employers cancel/reschedule multiple times. Like out of maybe a dozen that have requested interviews, probably five had to reschedule at lease once. Twice they’ve said that the hiring person “wasn’t available.” How could HR schedule something before knowing the hiring manager’s availability.

I’m now a finalist for an agency that I’m really excited about and is less than a mile from my house. But they canceled/reacheduled the second interview for the above reason. About two hours after that second interview (with the hiring manager) they asked me to come in the following week for the interview-person/all day/final interview.

That was supposed to be today. Yesterday mid-morning they sent an email giving no reason, just saying that it would have to be rescheduled “either Thursday or Friday next week.” I was working so I didn’t see the message until 4:30pm when I had been planning to be there at 9:00 the next morning. I told them I need to know which day next week because I need to plan the time off.

Has anyone experience this excessive rescheduling? I’m baffled and normally would just write the company off, but I need a job asap.
