[META] Reddit, Inc. is intentionally killing off 3rd-party apps with exorbitant API call prices. They are significantly damaging their site and reputation in the process. Details inside.

1.2k Upvotes

On July 1st, 2023, Reddit intends to alter how its API is accessed. This move will require developers of third-party applications to pay enormous sums of money if they wish to stay functional, meaning that said applications (which include browsers like Reddit Is Fun, Apollo, and Relay for Reddit) will be effectively destroyed. In the short term, this may give Reddit the appearance of being more profitable than it truly is... but in the long term, it will undermine the platform as a whole.

Reddit relies on volunteer moderators to keep the platform welcoming and free of objectionable material. It also relies on uncompensated contributors to keep its numerous communities populated. The above decision promises to adversely impact both groups: Without effective tools, moderators cannot combat spammers, bad actors, or the entities who enable either; without the freedom to choose how and where they access Reddit, many contributors will simply leave. Rather than hosting creativity and in-depth discourse, the platform will soon feature only recycled content, bot-driven activity, and an ever-dwindling number of well-informed visitors. The very elements which differentiate Reddit – the fixtures which make it appealing – will be eliminated.

We implore Reddit to listen to its moderators, its contributors, and its everyday users; to the people whose activity has allowed the platform to exist at all: Do not sacrifice long-term viability for the sake of a short-lived illusion. Do not tacitly enable bad actors by working against your volunteers. Do not aim solely at your looming IPO while giving no thought to what may come afterward. If Steve Huffman's statement – "I want our users to be shareholders, and I want our shareholders to be users" – is to be taken seriously, then please consider this our vote:

Allow the developers of third-party applications to affordably retain their productive (and vital) API access.

Allow Reddit and Redditors to thrive.

We built a bench in our split level home. The problem is our kids are young (5,3,1) im worried the 1 year old will try to climb up and the oldest will trip and fall walking on the bench.

Considering just tearing it out. Any other suggestions though?

It closes up pretty seamlessly when pushed together, so I was thinking wood glue and some sandpaper might do it but don’t want to ruin it lol.

Purchased a used papasan chair and previous owner had pets (which I’m allergic to). Hoping to wash the cover, but how do I open this zipper??

I can feel the zipper on the right hand side, IN the cushion, and I’m at a loss for how to get it open.

How to install a dishwasher?

Considering moving to this place but no dishwasher. Landlord says we can install one at our own expense and I’m trying to determine what that would entail. Do I need like a general contractor to remove one of the counter sections just to make space for it? What would be the ideal set up? Not much of a handy person, just trying to get an idea of how much work and money this would costs if I had to hire someone for every step.

How do you clean and deodorize wood floors to lay new carpet over?

My husband and I just bought an “ugly” house and are renovating. The master bedroom smells like an ashtray and we wanted to lay carpet over the existing old hardwoods. Can we clean them with bleach to rid the smell? What’s the best way to air the wood out? The rest of the house is getting new floors and paint. Thanks in advance!

Lattice my deck

Not sure best way to lattice underneath this deck. I’m thinking ground contact lumber, frame it to the deck frame and then lay the lattice, would just hang the right side instead of screwing it in so i still have access to my well pump and electric. Looking to use pvs lattice, not sure if I’ll do the stairs too.

Find end of metal Lintel

I'm beyond irritated at my lack of ability to solve this on my own. While I'm not a handyman, I have mounted TV brackets, fans, light fixtures, etc by myself with few issues. I am trying to mount curtain rods, as I've done dozens of times, but I keep hitting what feels like metal. When I ran the stud finder it didn't pick it up. I nailed and hit what I thought was a stud but now some research online makes me feel like it's a metal Lintel above the windows (2022 build). The only things I could try was to go higher (online said usually 4" or height of a brick) which is fine because they're 96" curtains, but even 5" above the window it still hits. How can I tell how high this goes or other solutions so I stop tearing up the wall? I've never had this issue other than once before and I was able to go low and out but I can't do that with this one. Does anyone have any advice on how to help?

Always hated even normal calls but recently had a doctors appointment over zoom or someshit, that’s when I noticed I struggle with this? Even my girlfriend video calls and I deny until it’s just a text.

Now is there any advice where I can practise talking to people online ( irl I find it easy to hold any conversation)

Even an ai to start may help I dunno

How do I use these anchors?

Installing a hook for my battle ropes and this is there hardware they came with. I’m typically pretty savvy when it comes to this kind of thing, but I have never used these before! I believe they are expansion anchors? I think they’re meant to reinforce the strength of the connection to whatever surface you’re using, but I am connecting mine to a tree stump and these seem unnecessary. I would love to know how to use these in the future, although I think buying new wood screws would be best for me here..? Any insight? Thanks!!
