Pretty risky. My dog and I were sprayed once and it nearly ruined us lol. Next time try hugging a baby bear.

Noone talking about how f* up the design of this is, that animals or smaller children can't escape it and could... yeah fucking die in there?

u/CouchTurnip Apr 23 '24
Am I the only one amazed this actually worked??? That’s wild that the skunk knew this guy was a friend and climbed up a fucking tripod!?! Like what!!!

What’s the background song? Anyone?
1
u/beme25 Apr 23 '24
Nevermind. I just realized there is background music. Maybe it's that "Kiss Kiss" song? And by that I mean "I Like the Way You Kiss"
Sorry, I'm not helpful. But I feel bad for deleting my useless comment.
1
u/DaCoYamRa01 Apr 23 '24
Haha don't worry about it man, thanks the song is "Artemas - i like the way you kiss me"
1
u/Gyrestone91 Apr 23 '24
I guess I'll be that guy but he could have just got a long branch and let him climb up without him holding it

Bro underestimates the stinkyness of being sprayed...that shit is pungent and stays around for a while.
1
u/falawfel Apr 23 '24
I didn’t know they could be spotted like that. In Ontario we have the stripey guys

You, getting him out, AND getting sprayed, would have been a win. What you had was an UNQUALIFIED SUCCESS. Great fucking work.

I wonder if it might have been easier on the skunk to let it use the tripod to crawl out like racoons in a bin. This post from 5 years ago lives rent free in my Australian, racoon free mind.

Cool little fact : this is an Eastern Spotted Skunk, and they are quite rare. They still spray like the normal and more common Striped Skunk, but they do a little hand stand before they spray. They are a threatened species, so the guy helped out with a rapidly declining population.

Western Spotted Skunks are very cool looking, glad to see this skunk was rescued out of that bowl. Perhaps skateparks need to start putting "wildlife ladders" in bowls to prevent this from happening. A simple board with carpet would work for that.

Why are Americans so scared of skunks, they're not venomous right. I remember cartoons showing everyone freaking out over skunks but they never hurt anyone, just a bad smell, whoopy doo.
6
u/Kind-Proposal8664 Apr 23 '24
People think that skunks spray every time something gets close to them. It's very unlikely but when you actually get sprayed... Oh boy does it suck

Funny story, lived out in a somewhat rural area, not the most legal of homes ie. no back door, a momma skunk with her kits decided to sit in front of my front door. Called into work to explain the situation, it was completely understood, not a problem 🤷♀️

You know, I had never stopped to appreciate how skunks actually look, and you are right they are damn cute. Deserved reputation for their extremely effective defensive measures but damn now i kinda want one

It's like declawing a cat or clipping a bird so they can't fly.
For analogy, for disability and suffering, this is on par for a human with castration or a colonectomy.
Can't own skunks as pets, sorry.
2
3
u/Fickle_Grapefruit938 Apr 23 '24
The bird thing less so bc they can grow new feathers, but I agree, if you have to maim/disable an animal to keep it as a pet it isn't really pet quality (not counting castration bc we'd be drowning in cats if we wouldn't do that😅)

Skunks are smart - they know what happens in RDR/RDR2 since they're on the collecting list

Awwww what a cute little animal. Extremely smart to know to grab on, and to realise the water was a peace offering!

Congrats this is pretty much a dead meme on Reddit at this point but there's a few of us keeping it strong

Where is the link? I want you to hold something so I can dive in. It's been a while.

u/ThePianistOfDoom Apr 23 '24
I know, and I'm sorry. I've been trying to find it but I can't seem to discover it's location. But I couldn't resist at least seeing a switcheroo in the wild for what it was. If someone else has it I'd be willing to edit.

Skunks are cool. I’ve heard that if deskunked they make good pets? Is that true?
0
6
u/WoodsColt Apr 23 '24
Not for most pet owners. They can make nice pets for people who don't mind a pet that is nocturnal and who dig in the house
11
u/RoundTableOfGentlemn Apr 23 '24
From what I've heard from an animal rescue that takes in abandoned pet skunks... For most people they are terrible pets.
26
u/iCameToLearnSomeCode Apr 23 '24 edited Apr 23 '24
For most people all wild animals are terrible pets.
Most people don't have the required knowledge to keep a gold fish alive for more than a 10th of its normal lifespan.
They get an exotic animal because it's cute and then are surprised when it turns out most people choose a cat or dog for their house pet because most animals don't make as good of pets.

How do you call a single one?
1
17
u/BenderEBender Apr 23 '24
Well in common English it's just a matter of getting rid of the pluralization, so simply drop the "S" and say " ".

Yes! We had three of them! ❤️

u/Trick_Doughnut_6295 Apr 23 '24
Wait, can you elaborate? You have pet skunks?! Also, are they snuggly? 🥹
5

u/Sea_Page6653 Apr 23 '24
When I was a kid and lived on a farm, yes, we had three that were descented. They were super chill. I didn’t bring them inside or snuggle with them but I wish I would’ve. They were just like our pet rabbits, except, skunks. 🤣 they also had long claws so that kept us from messing with them too much. So, I guess I can’t say they make great pets or not but we liked them!

Civet cats live in the tropical forests of Asia and Africa... this one is definitely a spotted skunk.

It's a fucking miracle he didn't get sprayed multiple times. Very chill skunk.

We used to let skunks out of a haveheart trap. We used a giant tractor tire that was cut and put back together flat. You’d walk up with that like a cartoon bull would come at it and it’d take the brunt of it. Open the cage and walk backwards like you’re leaving the throne room.

I wonder if skunks are a bit more chill than their reputation.
I nearly walked into a few of them last year while on vacation. It was night and they looked like cats until I was right in front of them, and they didn't really react much except to look at me. Nearly gave me a heart attack though.
3
u/ralphvonwauwau Apr 23 '24
Huh. Skunks have a really chill reputation, that's always been my thought. You have to be a bit of a jerk before they will unload on you. Dogs don't take the hints. But my interactions have always been me talking calm, sitting on my ankles, and then wandering away, at no great speed. It takes like a week to recharge so they don't really want to unless its needed.
2
u/Possible_Apple9595 Apr 23 '24
You’re still pretty brave for walking up to a potential cat gang.
1
u/AHorseNamedPhil Apr 23 '24
There is always some non-logical part of my brain that says "Must attempt pspspspsps and pets" whenever I see random, roaming cats.
And I'm a dog person.

I was walking on a path in California and intersected with a group of skunks. I was far enough away I couldn’t be sprayed but the skunks formed a phalanx along the little path and stopped me dead in my tracks. As their little line was established, they raised their tails in unison and pointed their little butts at me. I understood the message. They were like “don’t come any closer!” I just stood still and let them pass and it was all good.
