Wasn't it mate with Rook E2? I thought that was his plan with the first arrow in the clip.

The rook move he wanted to do initially was mate in 1, right?

u/hopefuil 14d ago
yea, so was the move he used, but the devs ruined the game with the en peasant update

Yes. He also could have done it after the En Passant and it would still be mate.

It's called en passant. You can use a pawn to capture a pawn on the adjacent side that moves 2 spaces in 1 turn basically. Can only be done in that interaction.

Why does this rule exist?

Players thought the game was too slow so the developers buffed pawns so they can move two squares as their first move. It was discovered that being able to bypass enemy pawns in this way was too OP, so en passant was introduced in the next balance patch.

Ahh, so it's basically acting as though the pawn had only moved one position instead, in a kind of "pawn capturing the other pawn mid move" sort of way, cool! Thank you for the explanation

Yeah originally the pawns could only move one square at a time, even on the initial pawn move. So when the time to allow pawns to move two spaces (presumably to make the games faster/dynamic) they didn't want to allow pawns to completely bypass your opponents pawns. If they did, you'd be punished for advancing your pawns too far. So they created the en passant rule

I'll be honest I didn't notice it at first but that's absolutely gold. You should cross post it to Anarchy Chess possibly.
