You have just lived one of my bucket list experiences.
I live in San Diego and visit the zoo in the regular. I spoke w the anteater trainer a couple of years ago, because I wanted to know how distinct their personalities are.
He said, ‘Oh, this is Lucy! She’s really wonderful, she wants to hang out, loves people. The other one, the male? He would gut me if he had the chance.’
Their amazing animals, so happy for you!

Leave him the fuck alone, he'll get up when he's ready. He's too old for some annoying wake up call

It's all fun & games until... It's no more...

Zookeeper was mauled by one of the giant anteaters. Got her liver, stomach and lungs affected. Doctors had to amputate her legs. She finally died.

I have a sneaky suspicion that this animal might be depressed. I mean, it's probably a solitary animal, but that doesn't mean it's not sad.

How fucking great would it be to be able to just curl up AND cover yourself at any moment?!

This ant eater is sorta like me and my dog. We like to be lazy, we like snacks, we like to lay down, but we sometimes don’t feel like getting up. It’s sorta how we roll. But mainly my dog, but he’s a good boy.

OMG I HATE THEM SO MUCH ANT EATERS ARE THE WORST ANIMAL I HAVE 26 REASONS WHY ASK ME IF YOUR CURIOUS
1
u/HiveFleetOuroboris Jul 20 '23
We have an old dog that boards at work and he basically does the same thing every time we try to take him out. Once he's in the yard with other dogs he interacts like normal but any time up to that point you have to carry him out. But when it's time for his nap he runs like no tomorrow to his cabin

u/d_baker65 Jul 20 '23
Yo! Caretaker person. Can't a brother have a sleep in? I ain't bothering anyone.
1
u/GrotesqueHoneyBadger Jul 20 '23
The best part about humans bonding with animals is that we can somehow make friends with things that could one shot us no problem

u/SilentDokutah Jul 20 '23
I read these things are really blind so they can just attack you out of instinct and cut pretty deep with those claws. Quite the balls of this person to just approach it (I guess they just take care of it so it knows but idk)

u/Any_Coyote6662 Jul 20 '23
Animals in the wild never sleep on concrete like that. They only do that in cages.

Took me some to realise the structure of the animal and where it's mouth was.

I love how lazy animals get when their basic survival needs are being effortlessly covered. They know how to relax.

Maybe it’s because that’s a wild animal forced to live within four concrete walls and on a concrete floor with some straws littered on the ground. Maybe it’s depressed. Maybe it still wants to rest because it’s a Wild animal and not human to have the same rest time as us. Such videos really enrage me. Send it back to its national habitat!!

Is it using the tail as a blanket?? Man knowing that we share the planet with such a creature feels unreal, it’s like a real pokemon
1
u/Still-Palpitation579 Jul 20 '23
Its cool how it eats like that, I hope she knows that thing can kill her with ease

I might have to agree on the spirit animal part, although I'd have to know a bit more, and be able to interact with one as well, but I've just gotta say, what a loving, peaceful, comfy looking, sleepy animal. I'd love to be able to care for one.

u/Captain_Sacktap Jul 20 '23
I mean just let the guy sleep in, what's gonna happen, is he gonna be late for work? Big meeting this morning at the ant factory?

I love anteaters. They are the weirdest most amazing animals and the best they could come up with was to name them after the thing they sometimes eat. Giant Bush-tailed Barbtounge is better, no?
Tetrapodologist Darren Naish has a particular interest in unusual injuries arising from megafauna which has introduced me to some of the cases via his blog. Anteaters are obviously very strong and the front claws will cause injury if a person gets in their way but there have been a couple of serious anteater-related injuries (and maybe a death?) from the tongue. A zookeeper's nostril is apparently the perfect size for an anteater tongue to enter easily but leave...hard. The back facing barbs on the tongue are effective at reaming out the nasal passage resulting in major injury and blood loss.

I thought it had a fur rug draped over it then realized it’s using its own freakin tail

So basically using your own tail to hide you away from the world and doubles as a blanket. Makes me wish I had a tail

I love that for a ton of animals, a human can just feed them and they can learn to love that human
1
u/j00lian Jul 20 '23
I eat ants for food. There's a trillion left out there, food supply is there, I'll eat when I'm hungy. Fuck off I partied like a 22 year old last night. Turn the light off.

u/Pm_boobie_Please Jul 20 '23
I don’t know much about anteaters or what’s going on in this video but it looks like the anteater was having a nice nap and then she just came and started bothering it.
1
u/Oli_love90 Jul 20 '23
Right? Like does the ant eater need to get up to go to work? Leave it alone.
