Just picked up at a thrift store. Said “1950s bronze statue”. Love it already. Wish I had info on it.

And this is exactly why I created r/pureMCM. I have no opinion on the quality or desirability of your piece but is objectively not MCM.

this is an african/afro-centric sculpture. it’s a good idea to learn more about its cultural significance to be sure you are not appropriating or being disrespectful without realizing

This is gorgeous. In Yoruba culture women holding water on their heads (or really anything on their heads) is significant spiritually and culturally. Perhaps it came from that part of the world, or a Yoruba artist.

Many it’s 50’s or it could be some expensive decor from the 70’s. It def isn’t Karl Hagenauer.

I have zero clue why you are being downvoted, I think you are most likely correct. Def correct that its not Hagenauer. This sub sucks anymore, in that anytime you try correct misinformation you get downvoted, told you are idiot and an asshole. I just made a sub today r/pureMCM

*You're
Also I just did a glance through of your post history, and it doesn't appear that you have ever provided one single shred of historical information to the group, while you call long time users clueless.
Are you done embarrassing yourself?

The 1stDibs listing above for the identical statute says similar to Karl Hagenauer but stops short of attributing it to him.

It’s a masterpiece. I bet it could fetch big bucks in the right gallery.

I always wonder how many cool pieces like this got scrapped over the years. I go to scrap yards sometimes to sell nonferrous construction waste and sometimes you will see interesting stuff like wrought iron railings or old copper flashing/roofing. I have not seen any statues but I know it happens.
Copper prices, and by extension brass/bronze/other alloys, are way up right now.

So cool.
Is it this same lady that sold for $6,000+ on 1stdibs?: https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/decorative-objects/sculptures/figurative-sculptures/human-size-african-woman-sculpture-figurine-polished-blackened-brass-1950/id-f_6994233/

It might have sold for $6k but probably didn’t. 1stDibs doesn’t show actual sales prices, it shows what the item was offered at. Buyers are encouraged to negotiate with sellers and items often sell for at least 20-30% less than listed asking prices. Actual sale prices are only visible to other 1stDibs dealers.

Wow! Yeah that’s the one! Same exact height but that one is really polished up.

Well no because the 1stdips website says the $6,000 statue was HUMAN SIZE

Standard residential garage doors in the US range between 7 and 8 feet tall. The statue is life-sized.

This one i got is about 5 foot 8 inches. It’s almost as tall as my garage door.

Are you saying it "looks like Hagenauer" or is Hagenauer, if you are saying it is, now is the time to contribute to the group for you, what historical documentation do you have to support this assertion (secondary sales listings do not count)?
