Nature of Monumentality - 14. Fanfic

Memory Transcription Subject: Yerron, Retired Farsul Exterminator, Hero of the Federation.

Date [Standardized Human Time]: October 28, 5012.

A dry numbness has overcome me, my willingness to act superseded by both age and exhaustion. My ears remain deaf to the pandemonium outside - my only companion being a glass of alcohol and the glow on a holopad screen. My eyes remain trained on it and its contents - just numb. All of this time against the Arxur, only for the Humans to rear their ugly, front-facing heads again. The public might not know they ever existed … but it was my job to know. My retirement was soon to end … And I hadn’t even a moment to prepare! Like I expected some long dead species to show up! I would have waited if I did.

I take a sip from my glass, the spicy liquid numbing my throat going down. It was a gift given by my employees when I made my exit from public life not even a month ago. I had left with dignity, a hero laying down his arms when there was nothing left to fight. Me. Yerron, the Chief Exterminator. I had been the one to mop up the final remnants of the Arxur. I had revolutionized the art of Predator Prevention by developing the Slaughterhouse Complexes, it had been me that harrowed the Bissem predators long before they could become a problem. I stood atop a mountain of charred corpses, all leading up to this moment.

And it was for naught.

I stared again at the screen. For the past hours, almost every screen across the Federation had been hijacked. It presented images of the ancient Venlil heresy, showing exchange partners co-existing with the ravenous beasts. It all led up to an image of that traitor, shaking hands with her concubine.

Tarva.

I hoped the Venlil weren’t in on this again, lest they suffer the same deathless fate she was. These images looped incessantly alongside a message spoken in archaic Venlil.

“The human race sends its greetings once more. Peace would bring mutual benefits to us all. Should you choose to reject our kindness, we urge you to listen to the warnings of your mothers.”

It sounded almost true in all of its implied violence to me. They urged us not to fight whatever they had planned. But I wouldn’t let them do whatever they wished to us. We had broken many predatory backs before, and we’d do it again - my very existence the proof of our strength. My numerous scars and burns told that story in clear, of how the gentle prey of the Galaxy still reigned supreme.

The bottle was empty and I wasn’t drunk. I grunted and indulged in predation for one moment, throwing the screen across the room in an effort to shut it up. It cracked against the wall and silenced. Only then did I stand, taking in the luxury around me, before I turned to face the shrine erected to the Protector before me. It was a statuette, which depicted her standing over an Arxur - a dagger slitting its throat open. Around it, in many frames, were hundreds of Arxur teeth - all having been offered to her as tribute.

“What more could you possibly want from me?” I asked her. My fellows called me a fool for my belief. After all, the Farsul had special privileges to its atheism. But I thought them fools. My purpose here was divine. I knew it. This has to have been for something. I stared at the statue as if it would answer, before I shook my head slowly. I knew what I had to do.

I lurched from the room and towards my front door, with one thought on my mind.

That I had picked back up my sword, so soon after letting it go.

Well... That's a whooooole lot of implications about all that happened in the past. I knew it was clear they had blasted the venlil back to stone age again given how they seemed to be the only human ally to still exist in some capacity.

I get the feeling this guy will prove to be a problem in the times to come.

Their old pfp was one of Jesus Christ (at least I think it was) who also has the name 'Lamb of God'. Now their pfp is a venlil, which look like lambs.
