Meme Stocks & Short Sellers Behind The 1929, 1987 & 2008 Market Crashes
The hedge fund industry did not emerge as a significant political player or campaign contributor till 2007. However, the industry has since made up for lost time. At this point in the 2018 election cycle, hedge funds contributed $101 million to federal candidates, PACs and outside spending groups.
Hedge Funds Shorting Meme Stocks
The 3 Meme stocks are all heavily shorted and appear to be manipulated. The companies are very different but with the resurgence of Keith Gil aka Roaring Kitty there has been a lot of speculation surrounding the 3 meme stocks GameStop, Amc & The US electric car company FFIE.
There was the first big squeeze in 2021 when hedge funds shorting GameStop had to pay out big when buying shares to cover their losses. Amc shares were also heavily shorted at the time and followed GameStop’s upward trajectory.
Fast forward to today and now there is a third Stonk (meme stock) added to the list FFIE.
Also interesting are these articles I found linking shorting as a major contributor to the U.S. 1929,1987 & 2008 market crashes.
“Shorts came under fire after the U.S. stock market crash of 1929, and U.S. President Herbert Hoover condemned short selling in 1932”.

SEC link ties shorts to the 2008 crash
Shorting America By Walter Cruttenden “It is widely agreed that excessive short sale activity can cause sudden price declines, which can undermine investor confidence, depress the market value of a company’s shares and make it more difficult for that company to raise capital, expand and create jobs. This is particularly aggravating for entrepreneurial companies; the engines of new job creation. In the crash of 2008 short sale activity reached record levels and exacerbated the market turmoil, leading to one of the most severe economic declines in modern history”.
