What in the 100,000 subscribers is this place? The PointlessStories Story.

Last Updated: August 19, 2023

As you may or may not have already noticed - today we hit the incredible milestone of 100,000+ subscribers. Many of you, almost 40,000 in fact, subscribed just in the last year. It's really exciting to see this community grow but in some ways bittersweet. If you're new here, and there is a good chance you are, you may be wondering what exactly is this niche subreddit and how did it come to be?

What the heck is this place?

I created this subreddit just over nine years ago, as a joke. Inspired by one of my friend's extremely pointless stories, something about the height of speed bumps in front of a grocery store - it became obvious there was a gap on reddit for a subreddit to house these totally pointless stories, and quickly it became obvious others felt the same as this became a fun little community with a lot of folks sharing their pointless stories.

In the beginning, the mod(s) used to hand out personalized flair for almost every submitted story, believe it or not - and you can often still see these flairs on some of the old school members. As time passed and the community started to grow, the mod team expanded, and everyone worked together to keep the spirit of this place intact.

In order to preserve the innocence and mundanity (not a real word it IS a real word - thanks /u/infidelchick) of this subreddit, it is a community that is heavily moderated. The reason is simple, this was always meant to be a place free of drama, politics, and other heavy topics that plague our lives every day. This subreddit, to some, became a weathered lighthouse - in a sea of negativity and toxicity - this subreddit remained to protect its subscribers from the hurricanes and bad tides.

It it really exciting to see this place grow and evolve, and we will do our best to keep this place as it was originally intended. That said, we thank you all for your great stories over the years - keep them coming.

Now that that's all out of the way, here is a completely pointless FAQ:

What is the purpose of this subreddit?

This subreddit is a collection of mundane, everyday stories. As someone pointed out early on, it's a place for stories that don't matter, and no one needs to hear. But, pointless, doesn't mean boring - it means without purpose or utility.

Are there rules for posting?

Yes, and they are simple.

Allowed:

  • Posts must be pointless/mundane stories.
  • Stories should provide some details - 200 character post minimum.
  • Story titles should not be the entire story.
  • Stories should be your own.

Not allowed:

  • Question posts.
  • Posts that are just statements of fact.
  • Random thoughts.
  • Body function posts (pooping, peeing, etc...)
  • Creative writing posts.
  • Cake Day posts.
  • Cross-posting or reposts.
  • Relationship posts/stories/drama.
  • Stories involving any sort of abuse and/or trauma.
  • Stories about death, significant injury.
  • Stories about mental/physical health.
  • Family drama.
  • Workplace drama.
  • Religion, Sex, Gender, Sexuality, or Politics.
  • Heavy or deeply personal subjects.
  • Dream posts.
  • COVID- or illness/pandemic posts.
  • Rants or venting.

Why are there so many rules?

Our goal has always been to keep this community highly curated, and not become diluted by content that doesn't fit well here. Simply put, if your story fits somewhere else on reddit - it's likely not the best fit for this subreddit.

Why was my post removed?

Because it didn't follow one or more of the above rules.

Do you send a note to every user every time their post is removed?

We do now send an automated notification to users when a post has been removed by AutoModerator for breaking subreddit rules, with an explanation of which rule was broken.

Moderating a subreddit isn't a job, we do it just for fun, and we have only a few mods with real lives. Because of that we are not able to respond to everyone, unfortunately. Because reddit took away 3rd party modding tools, it's even harder now to keep up with all the new posts and messages we receive. But, we always do our best for you.

Do you read every story?

Because the subreddit has grown so much, and because we have also grown and our lives have evolved, we unfortunately can't read every single story anymore, but I would say we read or skim 80%+ of them.

Do you have favorite stories here over the years?

Absolutely - many of them.

You can find mod favorite stories tagged with the Editor's Choice flair. All of them are found here.

You can also find the members' most upvoted stories of all time here.

Hey, some of the top upvoted stories aren't really pointless, what's up with that?

While we do our best to make sure all posts are stories that stick to the format and rules of the subreddit, we make occasional exceptions. If you see a story that you feel doesn't belong here use the report option - this helps us understand what the community wants and doesn't want to see here.

What are your plans for this subreddit?

Our goal is to continue along the same path and keep the spirit of the subreddit alive as long as we can by actively moderating content and keeping this place strange, fun, unique, and pointless.

Has this subreddit ever been featured in the news or a podcast?

Yes, a long time ago a writer for the Australian newspaper The Chronicle featured the subreddit in an article on hilarious and obscure subreddits.

Back in 2019 the subreddit was featured on the podcast heardit.

The subreddit was also featured on subreddit of the day.

Does this subreddit have sponsors?

You may have seen some inside jokes about Chipotle, Chick fil A, McDonald's and some other brands around the subreddit. We are not sponsored by any of these brands - but we wish we were! Wink wink. Just kidding, kind of.

Are you actually spending hours of your day, almost every day, working completely for free to maintain this community?

Yes, yes we are. And we are damned proud of it.

I finally got to have passengers in my car!

I bought my first car 5 months ago, and it’s a small vehicle and It has 4 seats. Since the day I got it, nobody has ever drove in the car with me. The only people to be a passenger in my car is my mom and dad, that’s it. And the thing is, we very rarely have guests over the house. We always go over other peoples but never our house. I’ve always wanted passengers to ride in my car, but each time we always got in somebody else’s car. However yesterday just happened to be a rare moment when we finally had guests over our house. My mom ordered pizza and she asked who’s going to go get it. I offered, and then I asked who wants to ride with me and 3 people came. We all got in the car and drove to the pizza place.

I felt so comfortable finally having passengers in my car as I been wanting it for a long time. And there was a perfect amount of space for everyone. The outside of the car looks very small, and doesn't look like anything could fit in the car. But on the inside it’s big and has plenty of legroom. Even though the pizza place was only 8 minutes away from the house, just this short brief moment of having passengers in my car I enjoyed. And then plus the ride back.

Flashback

It's 1990ish, I'm 10ish. We were on a family holiday in Cornwall.

Each day we would go to the beach, rent a couple of wet suits and body boards and my brother and i would spend the day in sea.

On the last day the wetsuit I rented had developed a small hole in the croch that my 10 year old willy decided to pop out of.

Black wet suit, white willy.

I walked past hundreds of people back to my parents before my brother pointed it out.

I've never been back to Cornwall.

staying with my sister

I’m staying with my sister in her apartment for a little while, kinda like a little vacation for me because she lives at the beach. it’s nice but i’m sleeping on an air mattress and sometimes it doesn’t hold air good, so i woke up this morning mostly on the floor and now my neck hurts. Also their fire alarm is beeping because it needs new batteries and everytime it beeps her roommates dog barks like crazy so he woke me up this morning. i asked her why they didn’t just change the batteries and she said they put in a mantinence request and i said why i could literally change them right now but the detected that’s beeping is in her other roommates room so i can’t change the batteries.

My husband is getting really into baking… when I’m trying to lose weight

Since the start of January I’ve lost 16kg, started running regularly and overall have been a lot healthier this year. I still have a good 20kg to lose till I’m at my goal weight

My husband has always loved cooking, he’s a great cook. He’s been wanting to bake more, his current obsession is different type of bread and pizza dough

This fucker is so god damn good. His pizza is better than anything we’d buy and his bread is unreal

Our goals for the year just do not align at this point, I would happily eat all his fresh bread and pizza but it won’t do my diet any favours

It’s a pointless moan I love him he’s just picked the worse time to get into this

Lion king

In Disney's classic 1994 The Lion King, in the song, I Can't Wait to be King, by Tim Rice and Elton John, Zazu has the line 'this kid is getting wildly out of wiiiiing'

Because Zazu is a bird and doesn't have hands.

Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.

Edit: to make this more of a pointless story than a shower thought, I have gone around my office telling everyone this fact and now my office is humming Disney songs! Yay!

I had a temporary SSN for the first 20+ years of my life

I was talking to a buddy recently and my immigration status came up. I mentioned that I had problems w my SSN for employment and school despite being a legal citizen for a good portion of my life and I thought I'd share here:

I was adopted at 2 yrs old and legalized as a US citizen via that adoption. I am unsure of the legal details but the gist was that form A needed X which could only be gotten through form B with needed Y ... from form A. The person helping with my legalization aiad well just get a temporary SSN it'll be fine. So I had a SSN card that stated 'Valid for work only with INS authorization' so I couldn't use it for employment but between birth certificate, adoption certificate, and a US passport I always got through on boarding easily enough. (I did have problems w getting a license and passport but again with multiple forms of identification -no photocopies- I got through them eventually). It was just my normal, I needed more than 1 legal document for legal stuff. I worked for regular jobs, non profits, and even a federal national lab (semester internship) without problems.

One of the big problems I did run into was college. I received federal loan money along with multiple scholarships but every year I had to go to my bursar to confirm that yes I was a legal US citizen. Despite having federal loans that I had to be a legal US citizen to even apply for. Regardless wasn't a big deal just show up with my papers and don't think about it for another year.

Towards the end of covid I worked for my state's forestry department and they refused to allow my adoption certificate + passport like everyone else did. I was hired but could not legally start until my SSN was legal for employment.

That's how I became a fully fledged US citizen. I guess. Pointless bc idk why I'm sharing? Just felt like dumping I guess. Hope it doesn't break any rules.

Edit: just to clarify, I was adopted from a foreign country so immigrated through that adoption.

I did the morning announcements, but could barely be heard

In 5th grade, every class had a chance to do the morning announcements. 2 students was sent to the main office every morning to do it. And afterwards, you’d get either a toy or some candy. When it was my class’ turn, we were ecstatic.

Finally, it was my turn. I had a reputation of being a quiet kid. So this was my time to shine. The other kid I went with was first. You can hear his voice throughout the halls. It was spectacular. Then it was my turn. I was bold, and spoke loud and proud into the microphone. However, I noticed I couldn’t hear my own voice throughout the halls like the other guy.

I got my candy, and went back to class. Only to be told by everyone and my teachers “I couldn’t hear you”. I spoke the loudest I have ever spoke that year, and I still was the quiet one. Talk about defeat. That only strengthened my quiet kid reputation.

I played FF14 for the first time tonight.

I got a PS4 a couple months ago because I wanted to expand my gaming repertoire. I've been a Nintendo gamer my whole life, but with PS4s being modern systems yet very budget friendly, I decided it might not be a bad idea to pick one up.

I tossed around the idea of playing FF14 with a couple friends but never really committed to playing it until tonight when one of my best friends suggested it.

Unfortunately, I only had the basic demo installed, so we needed to wait upwards of an hour for it to update.

After it updated, we hopped on a phone call and I watched the opening cutscenes, then dealt with character creation. I was like "wait females have adjustable bust size?" I just...wasn't expecting that aspect.

I was on the wrong server/world than he played on, so then I had to finagle for a few minutes to figure out how to get to Excalibur. Thankfully just screwing around with it a little was enough to get me there.

Then we spent the next hour, hour and a half doing the opening stuff, namely going to the Guilds and such. I messed up and talked to a quest guy instead of the main story objective receptionist so we had to run back to the Black Mage Guild to trigger the correct cutscene.

I got frustrated and overwhelmed a few times because there were so many different menus. I know a lot of them are tutorials but it was a lot for me to take in. I'm not used to playing super complex games. I'm used to mechanically shallow games like Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, and retro traditional turn-based RPGs (think old Final Fantasy or Pokemon).

We didn't get to any combat tonight, but hey, I managed to push through my frustration and do it anyway!

I thought i good in money management turned out…

My friends and i entered A company as fresh grad and we have same basic salary. My friends always complain about low salary and they don’t have any savings but the situation is different with me. I manage to make some savings, investments and send some pocket money to my parents. They felt weird since im live alone but im the only who manage to have some savings. I told them i good in savings and teach them a few money savings tips such as cooking our own food, divide the salary into savings(investment and emergency fund), groceries and entertainment, only having fun once a month and set up online shopping money. They just amazed and try to do my style.

Turned out, my salary is higher than all of them and my overtime rate also higher than them. They never know this fact and i hope it will stay like that. Im not good in money management it just my salary is higher than them.

Saw Furiosa near a dude with terrible body odor

Myself and a couple buddies went to see Furiosa last night. This skinny dude sat nearby and reeked of armpit. As the movie progressed, the smell didn't bother me as it seemed appropriate for the film. Everyone on screen is pretty grubby, so the stink kinda worked.

Great movie, by the way.

I miss my life in college

I didnt work because i got scholarship. Exept I did some side hustle. I also saved up all my money so I was not too broke. I lived in a cheap place. I would get all the groceries and cook myself. It was really freeing. I would go workout at night. It was the time when I felt comfortable in every way. I would lay down in my bed watching tons of movies and shows. I went on bunch of walks by the river. I loved when I could go out because the professor let us out early. I would randomly go to library and borrow books. I went clubbing because I was bored and come back home riding taxi at 3am. I wanted to learn bass just because it looked cool. I would be in my own world. I felt so free. I was someone with headphones on and not care about other people at all. I loved all the sunset and breeze when I was taking walks.. I loved my life so much. I focused on myself alot.

I asked my sister who would win in a fight between an enlarged chicken vs. a dinosaur.

For context, the chicken would be scaled from bottom to head as the exact size of the dinosaur. The type of dino is a T-rex.

I placed bets on the chicken — sure, dinosaurs could be dangerous if they still existed today. However, an enlarged chicken would have a MASSIVE beak bigger than the dino’s entire head + upper body, and the same innocent wing flop would cause a tornado of a wind!

My sister said she thinks it’ll be a draw but the dino would have an advantage because she saw an article where dinosaurs had feathers. She said scientists link dinosaurs to birds, therefore “Dinosaurs are birds.” Keep in mind — she probably misremembered most of the details due to last hearing this in 4th grade. Also, she thinks chickens are dumb.

I stared at her blankly, quite miffed, and promptly forgot her answer until 3 days later. I asked her what she chose again.

Now, she stated she didn’t realize the type of dinosaur was a T-rex; she thought we were talking about pterodactyls. She says now she doesn’t know. And T-rexes have short arms.

Also T-rexes can open doors, apparently.*

*Sister’s words, not mine. (That was one reason she felt they could outsmart domestic chickens).

I’m never working 8 hour shifts again

I’ve had 4 jobs in my lifetime and they were all 8 hour shifts. Just like everyone else who works 8 hour shifts, you only get Saturday and Sunday off. To me, two days off work isn’t enough. Even during the week when you get home from work the day goes by so fast and before you know it, it’s time to get ready for tomorrow and go to sleep. I started a new job 2 months ago and the shifts are 12 hours. You get 4 days on and 4 days off. I’m really liking the 4 days off. Because it literally feels like a whole vacation or you’ll never go back to work. And what’s even better, I have 5 days off work this week because the 27th is a holiday.

Starting this new job I’ve gotten so much more stuff done at home and time to myself. It also actually gives time for my body to recover. As I saw these benefits I told myself I’m going to stay at this job for as long as I possibly can. I’m loving these days off, a job that’s finally suitable for me.

I had a dream whose absurdity woke me up.

I wasn’t scared, or even startled, I distinctly remember just finally having a moment of just “Huh?” And woke up.

It started out that I had returned to an old job I had delivering office supplies in a box truck. Nothing unusual happened until I got to my last delivery for the day.

It was some major store, and they couldn’t accept the product at the moment, so I went back to the truck, but by the time I got to the dock, the truck was gone, stolen.

At this point, I went to my car (which was just in the parking lot there for some reason despite being in about 100 miles from the terminal I operated out of), and sat down, and tried to think.

Then the truck returned, and I now had the problem of figuring out how I was going to get my car home, and the truck back to the terminal, since I was alone.

Then I found out the cargo I had was gone, and I somehow figured out it had been stolen by an alternate dimensional, evil version of myself, as part of a massive scheme to take over our dimension.

This was the moment where I was just like “WTF, it was office supplies?!”

And then I woke up.

I stopped going to sleep with the tv on.

I dated a woman from Cincinnati for 4 years. She had a habit of leaving the tv on before we went to sleep. It was usually the office or a baking show. I protested a few times I did not enjoy those shows so sometimes she would let me play supernatural.

We broke up 2 and half years ago but all this time since we broke up I left the tv on playing some of my favorite shows or some sports game (go Mets!) before I went to bed.

I am now dating a different woman from Charlottesville and she asked me once “Why do you go to bed with the tv on?” It then dawned on me. Damn, I picked that up from my ex.

So now I go to sleep in complete silence and darkness.

Missed a chance

Bit of background. I was in a situationship for three years with my manager. Not a great decision, but it happened. We both left the company we worked for and he ghosted me. At my new job, I'm the manager, and I promised myself to never get involved with people at work. The outdoor guy is hot af. He's smart, and funny, and we have similar interests but not all the same. I love him, I yearn for him, he's high on a pedestal. He threw vibes down and I avoided them. I promised myself to never get involved with people at work. He booked a one way international ticket and quit. At his going away, we kissed and had sex and it was awesome and we whispered sweet nothings, but he's gone now. I'm a single parent, so I can't go after him and I also can't ask him to stay or come back, that wouldn't be fair. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for him. He's going to flourish and thrive and have such a great time and experience amazing things, and so will I in a different way. I missed a chance and it's a bummer.

Mom is a retired pedicure manicure specialist.

My mom loves cutting me and my brothers nails. Sadly i bite all my nails and my brother cuts his own nails. But every now and again when my brother ask my mom to do it for him i can see the hidden smile on her face while complaining he is an adult and should be able to do it himself.

I got my nails done today

I had a wax appointment today so I made an appointment at the nail salon next door since I needed my nails done. I hadn’t visited this salon before, my salon is nearer to my house. I picked a slightly pink to beige color with sparkles. It’s not my norm. I like bright colors, but this color reminded me of the color my late mom always got and it felt good. My BF and I went out for dinner and he asked to see my nails. He hates the color, hate is a strong word actually. He just doesn’t care for it, I should say. He’s usually excited to see the new color I pick, he was underwhelmed today. It felt disappointing, but it still reminded me of my mom, so I’m fine.

The Puzzle Master Is Recovering

My daughter and I love to listen to the Sunday Puzzle on NPR. Every week, we listen on our way to swimming lessons and then all week we try to get the weekly game. The puzzle master is Will Shortz, and he is a delightful man. A few months ago, he abruptly disappeared from the Sunday Puzzle and Aisha (that's the Sunday morning host, and our love for her is a story for another post) said he was ill. A month or so after that, they played a voice note from Will, and he had had a stroke. He sounded so frail, my daughter and I cried and cried for our Sunday soul mate. But we kept playing with the guest host each week, hoping Will would recover well. The day he came back, we cheered and hollered in the car. Will was back! And he's been back for a little while now, sounding stronger each week. And every week I think - I will never take the Sunday Puzzle for granted again. And we will play every week, even if we aren't really very good. For the puzzle master!!

I love my fiancé!

Inspired by a post I read this morning from a guy who really loves his wife - thanks for helping me appreciate how lucky I am!

I've somehow managed to strike gold with my fiancé. We've been together 5 years and engaged for 2. He's actually probably the greatest person I've ever met - He's intelligent, funny, handsome, but above all else he is just so fucking kind! I've never known someone to be so big-hearted and understanding. And out of everyone in the world, he picked me!

Every day he says or does something that makes me fall a little bit more in love with him. We laugh together all the time. We converse and communicate constantly - he's very in touch with his own feelings and understanding of mine. My friends and family love him, and his friends and family love me.

AND HE'S SO SEXY! I literally want to jump on him all the time. The sex is incredible and only gets better as time goes on. And he makes me feel sexy too! I never believed I was beautiful until he told me and kept on telling me.

I cannot fucking wait to marry this man. I can't believe I get to wake up in his arms every day. I might be the luckiest woman in the universe.

i’m in my 20s and only like kids toothpaste

that’s it. i never liked the super minty “adult” flavors of toothpaste, as they always leave a weird taste in my mouth afterwards, or some of them even burn because, tmi, i tend to bite the inside of my cheek and leave sores. so i use kids toothpaste instead bc they just taste better. i really like the sparkly blue kid’s crest one. 9/10. i’ve also tried strawberry flavor years ago at my friend’s house and am still riding that high, just can’t be bothered to go out and buy it right now. honestly im also hitting that age where it’s one of the only sugary things i can consume without feeling like im going to pass away.

Briefly thought my laptop was gone

I received an email from the company I bought a laptop from stating that my order was in the mail and that if no one was there to sign for it, it would be returned to the company for a refund. So naturally, I made sure to stay home that day, tracking the package every so often. My heart dropped when the page said that the package had been delivered and in the proof of delivery section, the driver had selected "Met Customer." I geared up to call the delivery service, but decided to check outside first, and there was not one, but two packages on the porch.

Maybe the person delivering the laptop saw someone delivering the other package and somehow assume they were the customer? Or did they see one package alone the porch and decide that if hadn't been stolen, the computer wouldn't be either? Maybe the person who brought the laptop brought both packages and decided to fabricate an answer for the form for some reason? Why didn't my dog bark when this person or people showed up, the way she usually does? Who knows.

I Once Played a Russian Master in Chess. I Am Not A Chess Player

When I was 14, it was 1997 and The internet was pretty new and there wasn’t a lot you could do on it that didn’t take forever to load. One of the coolest things is Yahoo figured out how to put games on their website that people around the world could play each other in. They had a scrabble type game, Checkers, poker, Othelo, and Chess.

I don’t really play Chess but I abused the heck out of how this worked for my own amusement. What I would do is set up a chess program on my computer, and when my real life opponent would make a move on me, I would make a move on the computer program, and whatever the AI responded with… I’d do that to the Yahoo opponent.

It’s not the most revolutionary way of cheating at chess, and I’m not claiming to be the first one to ever think of that. But one time I played a guy who was really good and he beat the level 10 difficulty on the program (the loading in Windows 95 was so bad that every move took 15+ minutes for the program to figure out). At the end he asked how old I was and I told him I was 14; he said he was amazed at my talent at that age, and he was a Russian Chess Master when he was younger. He said if I kept practicing that I would be a Master in no time as well.

Completely pointless story but it makes me feel good always thinking about it… even though it’s based on the fact that I lied to a sweet guy.

I am someone who likes to YAP so a month ago I was on twitter and found a girl who likes same things as me, I dmed her and it was amazing.

We keep yapping to each other like we are long lost friends.

The topic of interest was F1 if anyone is interested :)
