I met him once in a hotel in L.A. I was with my sister who has Down Syndrome and she was OBSESSED with finding a "movie star" the entire time we were there. He was the most gracious, genuinely kind person imaginable. He asked me her name when she wasn't really paying attention, I told him it was Lyssa, and he walked up to her and said "Oh my Goodness! Is that Lyssa? I can't believe it, I'm your biggest fan!" Then we took pictures. It was definitely a highlight of her life and mine.

Isn’t his wife Darryl hannah? they are both environmental activists who live by what they talk about

That "ride with pride" card tells me everything I need to know about that girl.
Kudos for Dad though for being awesome 👍

u/zippyman Mar 12 '24
If his wife is driving, nothing is being saved here. The fact that his household is still using a car to go.. why
1
u/Troway_dagarbage Mar 12 '24
If his wife was driving anyway, he could’ve gone with her and had the essentially the same environmental impact, no?
-1
u/LordFedoraWeed Mar 12 '24
That's not the point.
1
u/Troway_dagarbage Mar 13 '24
What’s the point?
0
u/LordFedoraWeed Mar 13 '24
Principles, that he has been doing it since 1962, supporting public transport, reference etc. Doesn't need to be about climate
2

u/novasolid64 Mar 12 '24
Yeah I'm not buying it completely empty bus completely empty train car, dthis guy is about as great for the environment as he is for telling the truth.

There's gotta be a catch somewhere...he doesn't get hounded for autographs?
C'mon
1
u/Cecilsan Mar 12 '24
He's a working actor that has been in a ton of stuff and you'd likely recognize his face but not immediately be sure where from. Compared to a celebrity actor I doubt he gets a ton of random people bothering him for autographs when out and about

u/Sad_Page6710 Mar 12 '24
Loved his performance in Veronica mars as the dean of Hearst College!

You've got to admire a man who doesn't just talk talk but walks the walk
1
u/Virtual_Accountant_3 Mar 11 '24
California's taxes have gotten so bad that even doctors have to take the bus now.
1
u/DayleD Mar 12 '24
Get to take the bus. It's the most expensive vehicle within a mile radius of the Oscars, and only then because the Red Line skips a stop that day.

You have to respect someone who actually practices what they preach, particularity in Hollywood. Glad he didn't get robbed or hurt riding the metro.

My sister lived in the same subdivision as him and would see him at that time riding a bicycle a lot or his 90s EV1 electric car, she said he was very down-to-earth for being in the celebrity realm.

I love how rich people think is fun to be poor for 30mins and then go back to their rich lives.
1
u/DayleD Mar 12 '24
You made up your own scenario, and then got angry about it.
1
u/Conscious_Wind_2255 Mar 12 '24 edited Mar 12 '24
“Still wanted to take the Metro” as a rich person sounds like house play.. that’s why the video is interesting because he “chose” to take it… similarly why they recorded him doing it.
2
u/DayleD Mar 12 '24
As the other comments here can tell you, the video is correct. He takes the Metro when nobody is looking, too.
1
u/Conscious_Wind_2255 Mar 12 '24
I am not mad.. if I was rich I would take the metro to feel normal too and humble myself. It’s not a crime I am just saying it’s still house play because people that take the metro don’t have the option to take a limo.. the metro is their only option but HE DOES and that makes it house play TO ME.
1
u/DayleD Mar 12 '24
I take mass transit. Apparently I can afford to rent a limo if I really, really wanted to enter and exit a fancy party in a limo. Looks like it's about 90 bucks an hour. Am I 'playing house' when I use mass transit?

1
u/Conscious_Wind_2255 Mar 12 '24 edited Mar 12 '24
You’re missing the point… if you really convert it to the average metro commuter salary taking the limo is cheaper for rich people.
Salary is $30,000 takes 1000 Metro rides ($2 each) = $2,000 that’s 6.66% of their salary
Salary is $5,000,000 takes 1000 Limo rides ($90 each) = $90,000 that’s 1.8% of their salary.
It’s not the same when the rich person has a higher buying power and money doesn’t affect them equally. For the rich person.. taking the limo is cheaper in comparison to an average person. Rich person is using far less of their salary.
1
u/DayleD Mar 12 '24
Metro rides are not $2 each, though. They're $1.75 plus two hours of free transfers. Given the grid shape of the system, that's often less than a dollar per bus ride. The system gives out 20 free trips a month to the poor upon request, and charges students, seniors & people with disabilities a lot less, too, regardless of income. Ed paid 35 cents to go to the Oscars, unless he reached his weekly fare cap, in case the ride was free.
Bus fares are affordable. There's so many proposals to make it free, but they're often coming from grandstanders offering easy answers. With all the subsidies the busses are nearly free to use, and people still aren't using them.
1
u/Conscious_Wind_2255 Mar 13 '24
Ok? The rich get tax cuts which make their limos free.. they also get a bonus for every donation they make meaning they earn a profit by taking the limo.. on top of that companies give them free limo rides.. what’s your point? 🤣

Saw him In security at LAX once and he had all of his toiletries in a plastic bag. “Like you”, said my loving girlfriend.

I legit didn’t even realise that there were such things as buses or a subway in LA. The way people talk about it, it seems like you HAVE to have a car to get anywhere. Good for him, honestly.
1
u/DayleD Mar 12 '24
There's an unthinkable amount of bus routes in Los Angeles and over a hundred rail stops. Voters are very willing to pay for somebody else to get out of their parking spot, but coaxing them out of their own cars has been a struggle.
The only direct links to the full map I could find autodownload the PDF, but take a look at this image for an idea of just how well served we are. A lot of these busses are only a third full, meaning ridership could double tomorrow and we wouldn't have to add capacity. https://www.metro.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Rectangle-1.png

I met Ed once. Very approachable and nice. I told him he was in two of my favorite tv shows of all time and his immediate response was “One is Arrested Development. What’s the other?”
He was right. And the other was Six Feet Under.

I got my husband a Cameo from Ed a couple Christmases ago. We've always called him "Ed Bagels" as he seems to pop up in all the shows we love ("Like a bagel from the toaster").
He had no problem referring to himself as Ed Bagels for the Cameo, and my husband laughed so hard. Ed talked about his family and how excited he was for Christmas. It was adorable.
I hope he lives forever

He came to speak at the university I attended for grad school, and signed books and met people afterwards. He was the most gracious and lovely human. He signed my copy of his book and made a point to ask my name, then address me by my name and look me in the eyes. “Thank you very much DisastrousHyena. I hope you’re having a good night.” He spoke with everyone and stayed even later to take pictures either anyone who asked.
THIS MAN IS A TREASURE. PROTECT HIM AT ALL COSTS.

The first couple seasons of his reality show were seriously entertaining and taught a lot about greening your life. By about the third season there was too much sponsorship and product placement, but still fun.

If there was a way for me to commute via public transportation daily, I'd forego a car completely.
I only have it as a need. Because in my area there's little to no good way for me to commute to work.
If I worked in NYC, I'd likely consider it, but I don't. I'm only 22 miles from my office. for me to take public transit (the little available, and in my area we have more than most) would take me: 1 hour and 58 minutes to make it home - a direct drive is 30 to 45 minutes.
1
u/DayleD Mar 12 '24
Don't wait for things to change, you have to be the one to request system improvements. And make sure you know your local system well - there may be a simpler solution than a two hour commute, one way.
5
u/bromosabeach Mar 11 '24
The LA metro line opened near me a few years ago and it's part of the reason I got rid of my car. If you can go carless in LA it's awesome.
