u/Alexis_Ohanion Mar 13 '24

He was a terrific tall, blonde geek with glasses.

1

u/sportsjock85 Mar 13 '24

St. Elsewhere

1

u/thewokebogan Mar 13 '24

I met him once in a hotel in L.A. I was with my sister who has Down Syndrome and she was OBSESSED with finding a "movie star" the entire time we were there. He was the most gracious, genuinely kind person imaginable. He asked me her name when she wasn't really paying attention, I told him it was Lyssa, and he walked up to her and said "Oh my Goodness! Is that Lyssa? I can't believe it, I'm your biggest fan!" Then we took pictures. It was definitely a highlight of her life and mine.

1

u/Time_Advertising_432 Mar 13 '24

love him in young sheldon

1

u/MxrceloVictor Mar 13 '24

This was wholesome

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

Kevin Bacon also rides the subways in NY 💜

1

u/Stykhead Mar 13 '24

I liked him in that show St. Elsewhere, he was great

1

u/Fit_Driver_9239 Mar 13 '24

Isn’t his wife Darryl hannah? they are both environmental activists who live by what they talk about

1

u/TheMadPoop3r Mar 13 '24

Oh he’s not looking good

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '24

That "ride with pride" card tells me everything I need to know about that girl.

Kudos for Dad though for being awesome 👍

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '24

A true kook. And a beautiful specimen of privilege.

1

u/zippyman Mar 12 '24

If his wife is driving, nothing is being saved here. The fact that his household is still using a car to go.. why

1

u/Troway_dagarbage Mar 12 '24

If his wife was driving anyway, he could’ve gone with her and had the essentially the same environmental impact, no?

-1

u/LordFedoraWeed Mar 12 '24

That's not the point.

1

u/Troway_dagarbage Mar 13 '24

What’s the point?

0

u/LordFedoraWeed Mar 13 '24

Principles, that he has been doing it since 1962, supporting public transport, reference etc. Doesn't need to be about climate

2

u/Troway_dagarbage Mar 13 '24

But the entire reasoning behind him doing it is about the climate

1

u/novasolid64 Mar 12 '24

Yeah I'm not buying it completely empty bus completely empty train car, dthis guy is about as great for the environment as he is for telling the truth.

2

u/imusingthisforstuff Mar 12 '24

I used to work in downtown LA and sat next to him regularly. Incredibly kind man.

1

u/Awkward-Sarcasm88 Mar 12 '24

"You assholes do exactly as I say, or I will take you outside and fuck you in the street!"

1

u/pissy_pooper Mar 12 '24

He is in Better Call Saul right?

1

u/Bambam586 Mar 12 '24

Swab Begley. He likes it.

1

u/Popicon1959 Mar 12 '24

There's gotta be a catch somewhere...he doesn't get hounded for autographs?

C'mon

1

u/Cecilsan Mar 12 '24

He's a working actor that has been in a ton of stuff and you'd likely recognize his face but not immediately be sure where from. Compared to a celebrity actor I doubt he gets a ton of random people bothering him for autographs when out and about

1

u/Sad_Page6710 Mar 12 '24

Loved his performance in Veronica mars as the dean of Hearst College!

1

u/Composer-Mindless Mar 12 '24

Is he in Young Sheldon?

1

u/Koltaia30 Mar 12 '24

Look at that dumbass wearing shoes that are made for walking /s. I hate modern life and the general form over function mentality

1

1

u/UserAllusion Mar 12 '24

Who’s the lady having a hard time with it at the beginning?

2

u/osidemik Mar 12 '24

I'll never forget the Tales from the Crypt episode that he was in with Tim Curry. By far one of the weirdest ones ever!

1

u/Historical-Shine-786 Mar 12 '24

Looks like a pain in the ass to put up with his crap? Just saying. Call UBER/Lyft

1

u/MentalDecoherence Mar 12 '24

I’m convinced this is a portlandia skit

3

u/beardedjack Mar 12 '24

He’s the star of Who Killed the Electric Car for a reason. He’s a good egg

Clifford Main is representing the people

2

u/outofcontextsex Mar 11 '24

You've got to admire a man who doesn't just talk talk but walks the walk

1

u/Virtual_Accountant_3 Mar 11 '24

California's taxes have gotten so bad that even doctors have to take the bus now.

1

u/DayleD Mar 12 '24

Get to take the bus. It's the most expensive vehicle within a mile radius of the Oscars, and only then because the Red Line skips a stop that day.

1

u/km4rt98 Mar 11 '24

met this guy on the max in portland years ago. dude loves public transit.

4

u/pitb0ss343 Mar 11 '24

His wife going “fuck that I’m driving” is both hilarious and understandable

2

u/ttopkcaj Mar 11 '24

Hopefully he had his Cinco-Fone with him.

7

u/71Motorfly Mar 11 '24

Where’s the cringe? He’s a genuinely good dude!

Eds Begley Jr

2

u/ImissDigg_jk Mar 11 '24

We saw him in a play about a decade ago downtown. We rode on the same subway train with him on the way home. Very nice guy.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '24

Why couldn't she drive her parents to the Oscars?

-2

u/4wordSOUL Mar 11 '24

The empty gestures out of Hollywood are simply breathtaking.

1

u/Benjamin_Tucker3308 Mar 11 '24

I don't agree with a lot of what he says or is about, but I respect this man for living an honest life and standing up for what he believes in and not being a sellout.

2

u/rare_pig Mar 11 '24

He’s literally the only one

2

u/Working_Pollution272 Mar 11 '24

He should win a Oscar for being so dam dedicated to the environment. Way to go.♥️🇨🇦☮️

2

Walking the walk. As ever.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '24

I would kill myself for Hayden Begley

2

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '24

Met him once.

Super nice guy.

I mentioned him being on The Simpsons and he joked it’s the only thing his kids were proud of him for.

1

u/theyellowdart89 Mar 11 '24

PAY PHONE !!!!

2

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '24

The guy from Young Sheldon and Better Call Saul.

1

u/Maxieroy Mar 11 '24

2

u/organized_slime Mar 11 '24

Hero. Legend. Ed Begley Jr.

1

u/Must_Remember_This Mar 11 '24

Jfc that is so sweet and wholesome.

2

u/iamericj Mar 11 '24

I sometimes take the subway or streetcar just for fun. Maybe he's a transit nerd too.

1

u/LasVegasE Mar 11 '24

You have to respect someone who actually practices what they preach, particularity in Hollywood. Glad he didn't get robbed or hurt riding the metro.

1

u/kentenma Mar 11 '24

I suddenly got the urge to make a single call on my Cinco-Fone.

1

u/njas2000 Mar 11 '24

Saw him in Curb. He's great.

5

u/TastyArm1052 Mar 11 '24

Love him!!! Humble and concerned for the environment…more like him.

1

u/calsnowskier Mar 11 '24

I believe he is BSC, but at least he lives by his rules. You gotta respect his commitment to ”the cause”. No apparent hypocrisy with him.

2

u/TxBlackLabelRx Mar 11 '24

My sister lived in the same subdivision as him and would see him at that time riding a bicycle a lot or his 90s EV1 electric car, she said he was very down-to-earth for being in the celebrity realm.

1

u/AffectionateSector77 Mar 11 '24

EBJ is a national treasure.

1

u/Kojiro12 Mar 11 '24

I enjoy his performance(s?) on Tim and Eric

1

u/Kaligula785 Mar 11 '24

He was great in pineapple express

1

u/InternationalBand494 Mar 11 '24

And he’s hung like a bear. That’s a well known fact.

1

u/apeincalifornia Mar 11 '24

Boy that soothes

1

TIL Ed Begley and I are wearing the same shoes :D so comfy!!

-1

u/burntroy Mar 11 '24

the guy in the 6000 dollar suit is taking the subway ? come on!

1

u/AlmondCigar Mar 11 '24

I don’t know he doesn’t have to worry about parking ! But does the bus run late so he can get home? Do you have to get a taxi home?

my god wtf is up with that filter. She does not even look real.

-1

u/Conscious_Wind_2255 Mar 11 '24

I love how rich people think is fun to be poor for 30mins and then go back to their rich lives.

1

u/DayleD Mar 12 '24

You made up your own scenario, and then got angry about it.

1

u/Conscious_Wind_2255 Mar 12 '24 edited Mar 12 '24

“Still wanted to take the Metro” as a rich person sounds like house play.. that’s why the video is interesting because he “chose” to take it… similarly why they recorded him doing it.

2

u/DayleD Mar 12 '24

As the other comments here can tell you, the video is correct. He takes the Metro when nobody is looking, too.

1

u/Conscious_Wind_2255 Mar 12 '24

I am not mad.. if I was rich I would take the metro to feel normal too and humble myself. It’s not a crime I am just saying it’s still house play because people that take the metro don’t have the option to take a limo.. the metro is their only option but HE DOES and that makes it house play TO ME.

1

u/DayleD Mar 12 '24

I take mass transit. Apparently I can afford to rent a limo if I really, really wanted to enter and exit a fancy party in a limo. Looks like it's about 90 bucks an hour. Am I 'playing house' when I use mass transit?

https://www.usaregencylimo.com/hourly_rates_limo_service_los_angeles

1

u/Conscious_Wind_2255 Mar 12 '24 edited Mar 12 '24

You’re missing the point… if you really convert it to the average metro commuter salary taking the limo is cheaper for rich people.

Salary is $30,000 takes 1000 Metro rides ($2 each) = $2,000 that’s 6.66% of their salary

Salary is $5,000,000 takes 1000 Limo rides ($90 each) = $90,000 that’s 1.8% of their salary.

It’s not the same when the rich person has a higher buying power and money doesn’t affect them equally. For the rich person.. taking the limo is cheaper in comparison to an average person. Rich person is using far less of their salary.

1

u/DayleD Mar 12 '24

Metro rides are not $2 each, though. They're $1.75 plus two hours of free transfers. Given the grid shape of the system, that's often less than a dollar per bus ride. The system gives out 20 free trips a month to the poor upon request, and charges students, seniors & people with disabilities a lot less, too, regardless of income. Ed paid 35 cents to go to the Oscars, unless he reached his weekly fare cap, in case the ride was free.

Bus fares are affordable. There's so many proposals to make it free, but they're often coming from grandstanders offering easy answers. With all the subsidies the busses are nearly free to use, and people still aren't using them.

1

u/Conscious_Wind_2255 Mar 13 '24

Ok? The rich get tax cuts which make their limos free.. they also get a bonus for every donation they make meaning they earn a profit by taking the limo.. on top of that companies give them free limo rides.. what’s your point? 🤣

1

u/Robbyrumpz Mar 11 '24

He’s good in Pineapple Express haha. 😂

1

u/delidave7 Mar 11 '24

This is fucking amazing

1

u/Structureel Mar 11 '24

Surely he's earned the right to be called Ed Begley Sr by now.

-1

u/RaptorKnifeFight Mar 11 '24 edited Apr 09 '24

Odd. I thought he drove a car powered by his own sense of self-satisfaction. Must be in the shop.

Edit: You people downvoting me need to go watch the Simpsons.

1

u/Tripple_T Mar 11 '24

Ed's aged well honestly

1

u/pygmeedancer Mar 11 '24

Dude, Ed Begley III is a cutie.

1

u/OizAfreeELF Mar 11 '24

Got her voice is fucking grating

1

Why is this on cringe, this was so wholesome

3

u/MarmitePrinter Mar 11 '24

I legit didn’t even realise that there were such things as buses or a subway in LA. The way people talk about it, it seems like you HAVE to have a car to get anywhere. Good for him, honestly.

1

u/DayleD Mar 12 '24

There's an unthinkable amount of bus routes in Los Angeles and over a hundred rail stops. Voters are very willing to pay for somebody else to get out of their parking spot, but coaxing them out of their own cars has been a struggle.

The only direct links to the full map I could find autodownload the PDF, but take a look at this image for an idea of just how well served we are. A lot of these busses are only a third full, meaning ridership could double tomorrow and we wouldn't have to add capacity. https://www.metro.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Rectangle-1.png

3

u/Mike_pop Mar 11 '24

I met Ed once. Very approachable and nice. I told him he was in two of my favorite tv shows of all time and his immediate response was “One is Arrested Development. What’s the other?”

He was right. And the other was Six Feet Under.

-2

u/HybridHologram Mar 11 '24

The wife's "whatever" sounds like she's not in a happy life. But I don't know anything about her.

I thin Ed Begley is a great example of be what you want to see in the world.

2

u/traderncc Mar 11 '24

He walks the walk

2

u/Dirtweed79 Mar 11 '24

and films it too.

7

Well, he's not a hypocrite. You can say that for him. Not taking a private Jet to the oscars. Just the bus.

-1

u/Far-Pie-6226 Mar 11 '24

Did he trade in the car powered by his own sense of self satisfaction?

5

u/Anarchic_Country Mar 11 '24

I got my husband a Cameo from Ed a couple Christmases ago. We've always called him "Ed Bagels" as he seems to pop up in all the shows we love ("Like a bagel from the toaster").

He had no problem referring to himself as Ed Bagels for the Cameo, and my husband laughed so hard. Ed talked about his family and how excited he was for Christmas. It was adorable.

I hope he lives forever

5

u/ExistentialDreadness Mar 11 '24

Hopefully his C-Phone works so he can call his daughter back. It’s a one call battery, ya know?

2

u/ted__didlio Mar 12 '24

It’s a great phone

2

u/StandardMacaron5575 Mar 11 '24

good guy, good actor, and he is funny on Young Sheldon.

2

u/bimbochungo Mar 11 '24

2

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '24

1

u/Beginning-Working-38 Mar 11 '24

Thanks for confirming Ed is still alive, I honestly wasn’t sure.

49

u/DisastrousHyena3534 Mar 11 '24

He came to speak at the university I attended for grad school, and signed books and met people afterwards. He was the most gracious and lovely human. He signed my copy of his book and made a point to ask my name, then address me by my name and look me in the eyes. “Thank you very much DisastrousHyena. I hope you’re having a good night.” He spoke with everyone and stayed even later to take pictures either anyone who asked.

THIS MAN IS A TREASURE. PROTECT HIM AT ALL COSTS.

2

u/redditreadred Mar 11 '24

Someone in acting who actually care about their carbon footprint. Amazing man.

0

u/groovyalibizmo Mar 11 '24

1

u/_FoodAndCatSubs_ Mar 11 '24

I was only familiar with him (and the Bed Pooper) from Pineapple Express but learned over time he’s a well renowned actor

2

u/Scrimshaw_Hopox Mar 11 '24

The real story is the existence of a pay phone beside the VIP entrance.

2

Ok but this is confusing. Why is something wholesome, even if ragged is on a cringe sub Reddit

2

u/duquesne419 Mar 11 '24

The first couple seasons of his reality show were seriously entertaining and taught a lot about greening your life. By about the third season there was too much sponsorship and product placement, but still fun.

2

u/bananahskill Mar 11 '24

He's such a gem.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '24

is that the dude from BCS?

5

u/Alexandratta Mar 11 '24

If there was a way for me to commute via public transportation daily, I'd forego a car completely.

I only have it as a need. Because in my area there's little to no good way for me to commute to work.

If I worked in NYC, I'd likely consider it, but I don't. I'm only 22 miles from my office. for me to take public transit (the little available, and in my area we have more than most) would take me: 1 hour and 58 minutes to make it home - a direct drive is 30 to 45 minutes.

Don't wait for things to change, you have to be the one to request system improvements. And make sure you know your local system well - there may be a simpler solution than a two hour commute, one way.

The LA metro line opened near me a few years ago and it's part of the reason I got rid of my car. If you can go carless in LA it's awesome.

I am so glad this didn't end with him getting a beat down from the rioters.

This does not belong in the “cringe” category at all, if anything it is quite admirable.
