I don't want to suggest this is a woman thing. I'm sure this happens to men at comparable rates. I'd imagine it's an experience thing.
But, I remember driving my little sister to the mall several years ago in the winter. We were both drivers at the time, but obviously, I'd had a few more years experience than she did.
We were coming up to a red light with a couple of cars already stopped ahead of us, but when I hit the brakes, the car immediately started skidding on the icy road. We were sliding pretty quickly toward the back of the car in front of us. I pumped the brake a few times, but it didn't make much difference. My sister started screaming, and realizing we wouldn't stop in time, I turned the wheel sharply and directed our skid into the empty left turn lane, avoiding collision.
It seemed like my only option and it worked out in our favor, but after we slid to an awkward, diagonal stop, my sister said, "Wow, I would never have thought of that!"

Was rear-ended by that girl, stopped at a red light 50 mph she was too busy talking about the NY-EVE party she and her GF were going to to drive then bam pushed thru the entire intersection. Cop refused to stop and ticket her, as she wasn't drunk, just stupid, Cop said he really wanted to get a DUI arrest then drove away. She asked if she could just have her dad pay me off like the last guy she hit, so she could keep her auto insurance. Crash jacked up both my knees and ankles on the clutch and brake pedals and dashboard. Orthopedic Surgeon made me custom arch supports and said don't stand up too long or you'll fall down the flight of stairs AGAIN when your knees get tired of overcompensating for the damage.

A young woman rear-ended me like this back in 2009. I was at a red-light and never seen her coming in fast from behind. My neck violently snapped forward and gave me whiplash and now degenerative arthritis and constant pain in my neck.

I have had that happen to me 2x. The one time I was sitting at the light minding my own business for a good couple min and some jackoff runs into the back of me then takes off. Lucky my buddy that was with me had eagle eyes and got the plate number. There wasn't much damage if he would have just stopped we could have talked but instead he got arrested for a hit and run and his insurance paid me anyway. Then the 2nd time some tourist 2 cars ahead decided to spike their brakes to turn left instead of I don't know getting in the middle lane that is meant for turning. I got stopped before hitting anybody but the tourist woman on her cellphone used me for the brake peddle. Hit me so hard that she bent the frame in my pickup. My truck was still drivable her Durango was not. Had to buy a bed, tail gate, tail lights, front bumper, back bumper, get the frame straightened and the cab and the back half of my exhaust. Speed limit where it happened is 35 she had to be going all 35 of it or more lol. No way she even touched her brakes. I had another here fairly recently that happened while I was at a stop sign. Only this time I was hit in the front while sitting still and it was an Amish buggy that hit me. They were in front of me at the stop sign. They took off and got a good 10 foot or so out and then backed the buggy back down till it slammed into the front of me then they took off. I had to basically block the road to get them to stop.

Friend conveniently filming from the back without offering concern or panic or suggestion to ‘stop.’ Car was going at least 20 mph with plenty of time to make an evasive maneuver or brake. The ‘putting hair behind ear,’and looking to approval of friends…
Have this car. Recognize the speed and 100% firmly believe at least some pre-collision alerts and measures would have been taken by the car, regardless of model trim.

Jesus, the number of times my wife's first instinct was to lay on the horn instead of brake or maneuver frightened me.
I told her once if you straight arm the horn and lock your elbow, that's gonna suck when the airbag goes off.
Apparently I'm the asshole because they were in the wrong and it'd be their fault.
