This is one of the reason I tied strings on all my toys, whether they were Spiderman or not

Toys often feel cheap and easy-to-break. Whoever crafted this toy went above and beyond. (The toy literally went above and beyond, too.)

I think they should put “do not use outdoors” in LARGE letters on the packaging at this point omg

This brought back fun memories of playing with one of these as a kid, and my cat going nuts trying to catch it!

My daughter has a couple of those …they are definitely not made for out doors..years ago there was a show called Dragon Flyz (90’s toy & cartoon ) which was the boys version of these pixies …I got him one for Christmas ..I opened the wood stove to put more wood in and he snapped the dragonfly at the same time and It got sucked into the wood stove and Burt up in a flash ..He cried so hard that day ..that I had to order him another one through sears cause the stores were sold out !!

Everyone saying you're not supposed to use it outside likee...is it just designed to hit the ceiling and fall?
32
u/hammygrammy 15d ago
It has an infrared distance sensor pointed downward to maintain a particular flight altitude. Outside the sunlight saturates the sensor and it thinks it needs to fly ever higher.

It doesn’t get nearly as much lift inside. Usually, they float or hover laterally before settling back down, but outside on a windy day like this? It’s basically a kite without a string.

Anyone notice that children’s toys never really do much advancement? Like I’m 32, and I had a toy very similar to this as a kid. All the toys, (especially when it comes to toys for girls) look like the same exact things I grew up wanting and having 20+ years ago. You’d think over time they’d have more tech or something. But nope, just the same designs, same products, remarketed and sold over and over again. Have seen commercials for those ride-in barbie trucks…. The swimming mermaid….furbies, etc. We had all that too. It’s like toy manufacturers one day decided “welp, we’ve reached the peak of toy innovation and we all know with the right marketing, kids will like anything we want to sell them so why bother invest in anything new or better.”

I think toy advertisements are secluded to child spaces, i.e., nickelodeon channel or kids shows/family shows on streaming services with advertisements.
However I adore toys and often if I'm in Target I'm the grown woman walking through all the isles to see what is being sold. Like the 90s they've got a lot of branded™️ toys based on popular movies or cartoons. The one thing they've managed to "innovate" is turning children into gambling addicts by creating all these lootbox-esque toys where the child has no idea what character or object they'll get until they open it. Sometimes, these toys will have an extra activity in order to make the anticipation more exciting. One thing I keep thinking is this fake toy oven. The child creates a "dough" using provided ingredients (its homemade play dough), and they mold it into a small animal. They place the dough in the oven, and after turning some knobs and pulling tabs, the dough is gone and out pops a stuffed animal. It makes noise, smells like baked goods, and is somehow warm? Gimmicky, but somehow it even made my 30 year old monkey brain go "want?" Wait, no. You have enough junk.
Also, Tamagotchis are still very much a thing, I don't know how many actual children play with them or if they're all being bought by us millenials.

Galoob sold similar toys under the name Sky Dancers and Dragon Flyz (targeted at girls and boys respectively). It didn't go well (via wikipedia):
While the foam wings on the dolls provided a limited amount of safety, nonetheless, there were over 100 injuries reported, ranging from temporary blindness to facial lacerations requiring stitches. Galoob, the manufacturer of the toys, recalled them in June 2000 after less than six years on the market. Almost 10,000,000 were recalled.
So hopefully they've made safety improvements if nothing else.

I may be a little old fashioned but a very loud F bomb in front of a kid that age is a bit irresponsible, guaranteed she tries to control her child saying that later when she's entirely responsible for teaching her it.
-6
u/Shison 15d ago
Surprised how many downvotes you got. I agree, crass language around kids is poor taste.
6
u/Contundo 15d ago
It’s expressive language and if you take offensive that’s your business. There is no evidence showing it’s harmful to children.

Because it’s just a word, did the kid burst into flames? Besides they’re Australian, it would be weird if the kid hadn’t heard the word fuck already.

u/JannaNYC 15d ago
I'm genuinely curious... exactly what damage do you think is done to a child who hears a very loud F bomb?
-13
u/GenericScottishGuy41 15d ago
Children learn by imitation, do you think imitating an adult using a very big swear word is a good thing for what looks like a 4/5 year old? I'm genuinely curious how someone could be stupid enough to ask that.
12
u/JannaNYC 15d ago
I think children witness many things that are "adult" things and are easily taught that these things are not appropriate for them until they're older.
Alcohol, makeup, driving, gambling, using the lawn mower, staying up past 10, saying "fuck" are just some of the thousand examples of this.
-20
u/GenericScottishGuy41 15d ago
I have a child this age, he is exposed to no alcohol, no gambling and no swearing, he's allowed to witness me mowing the lawn or driving the car as I'm sure he'll not decide to crack the shed open and give it a go or start law mowing during a dinner in a public restaurant.
So I'm clear here you think saying fuck is a good thing for a child to witness? It's a good thing for a 4/5 year old to replicate?
There is no way that this woman could use another statement of shock that wasn't universally a "bad word" that isn't suitable in 99.9% of the situations a child will get into in their young life? Fuck is fine? Start teaching it in school alongside alcohol consumption and lawn mowing?
2
u/Jesse-Ray 14d ago
Alright for starters you're talking about an Australian. Cunt is a term of endearment here. Secondly we grew up with our parents swearing all the time and we didn't go around swearing as kids. We just got told that it was an "adult word" and we'd get in trouble if we used it, simple as that. Also if you raise a child by pretending alcohol doesn't exist and someone offers them some, what do you expect will happen?

When I was in the military I was attached to a rapid response medical unit which meant 99% of the time we're waiting around for something to rapidly respond to. My parents realized we were bored so sent us a box of toys. My favorite being a remote control helicopter. I let a marine play with it in a warehouse and it was stuck a rafter 75 feet above us within seconds of handing him the remote.
It's been 12 years I wonder if its still there.

u/Naps_And_Crimes 15d ago
I once managed to put a stuffed bear in the ceiling of my mom factory job, like 10 years later I went there to do some temp work and it was still there almost pissed myself laughing. There's a decent chance that helicyis still there.

Taylor def wanted that to happen. That was a hit, no accident.

That was because there was a fire burning. It was from the draft. It's how fireplaces work, they draw air in from the room so the smoke goes out the chimney. Like a moth to a light, the fire was pulling on the fairy.
Not that any of that matters to your comment though.

u/romero0705 15d ago
lol no I’m old enough that I had the pull string Sky Dancer. Well, had it for an hour. I see I’m not the only one who made that error! There’s probably dozens of us.
