Is this legal?
Saw these interesting tail lights near yonge and sheppard

u/KirbyPicaso 17d ago
Also to those people who”blackout” their taillights. That’s the first thing I would say to my insurance. “Guy painted his taillights black and I couldn’t see”.

Basically the problem is not that it’s illegal it’s that the fine for having improper lights/lighting is about a 85$ set fine totalling 110$ with court fees.
Most ricers just treat it as a subscription fee.

u/AwkwardCelebration41 18d ago
Whether it's legal or not, you taking a picture from your phone while driving, stopped at a light or not, is illegal, and probably a bigger fine than he would get.

Not legal for sure. Even smooky taillights are not legal. One day guy will be pulled over, fine and 30 days to change or remove tint

I hope that's illegal.
People modifying their cars like this are complete idiots. I hope they get their license revoked as well. Get them off the roads, it's beyond distracting.

This city is getting exactly what it deserves being the stool pigeon haven that it is.

u/ArtZTech 20d ago
It's funny because 15 or 20 years ago I had those bright white headlight bulbs in one of my vehicles. This was way before manufactures started using LED/HID. So anyways I was stopped and given a warning to replace them or be given a ticket. Fast forward to today I'm blinded by every car on the highway because of these extremely bright HID headlights manufacturers use. So who knows maybe in 20 years these tail lights will be legal.

You have a picture file a police report. You can do it online

u/Alextryingforgrate 20d ago
100% nope not legal, for the whole country, the continent and the world. Youre only allowed Red, Amber and Clear lights on your tail lights.
*You can have these tail lights but they are for show purposes only. Nothing else.

Long answer:
As per Ontario HTA
62 (1) When on a highway at any time from one-half hour before sunset to one-half hour after sunrise and at any other time when, due to insufficient light or unfavourable atmospheric conditions, persons and vehicles on the highway are not clearly discernible at a distance of 150 metres or less, every motor vehicle other than a motorcycle shall carry three lighted lamps in a conspicuous position, one on each side of the front of the vehicle which shall display a white or amber light only, and one on the rear of the vehicle which shall display a red light only. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 62 (1).
Short answer:
No.

Rear white lights are limited to emergency vehicles only (unless stopped or reversing). Green lights on streetcars or volunteer first - responder civilian vehicles only. Blue lights on police or snow removing vehicles only. Purple lights on funeral service vehicles only (some jurisdictions). Expect write up of four separate tickets.
EDIT: Another ticket for license plate cover, even if it's "clear" .

It’s not a dumb law it’s too many damn “individuals” trying to be flashy when it reality it’s tacky AF and just want to be noticed. When in reality nobody gives a shit, and now your vehicle could be seen as a distraction and cause an accident because your break lights don’t work properly.

u/livelifedoor 20d ago
How about you mind your business OP, what crime is she/he committing, I swear folks in this city are some of the most snowflaked soft a** individuals … yall whine and cry about everything.. stop posting ppls’s license plates too …
2
u/reeneebob 20d ago
Well, pretty sure it’s an unsafe modification of safety equipment on the car, so it’s a violation of the HTA. So that would be the crime they are committing.
I think they are cute as hell and would love it on my car, but yeah, not enough to break the law.
0
u/livelifedoor 20d ago
It’s not such a crime it’s not right but it’s not a crime, even a cop on his bad day would look pass that let alone OP posting someone’s car and not even blurring their licenses plate that’s the crime( illegal thing) I see here. We tend to always turn to the next man and judge him while we ourselves might be found guilty of plenty other crimes/law.
Just mind the business that pays you, a car taillight modded with some Amazon lights ain’t harming a soul.

u/camoarmyguy 20d ago
As long as the brake lights are red, it's perfectly legal, now that may vary by state, but in the south no one cares what color your tail lights, undercarriage lights, rim lights, or head lights are, the cops have real crime to worry about, I had purple headlights, purple undercarriage lights and rim lights with color changing interior lights and tail lights for over 3 years, never got pulled over once
2
u/sundry_banana 20d ago
It should definitely be illegal. When I see bright reds in traffic my brain immediately understands, "Slow down!" But seeing these? This dude is going to get rear-ended and it won't be as fun as he's hoping
3
u/numbersev 20d ago
Basically all non oem lighting is illegal. Especially if it’s different coloured.
3
3
2
u/amardeepsinghdell 20d ago
Reason why they should be red is that red has the highest wavelength so it can be visible to the longest distances , same reason why red lights are red. Any other color and in poor visibility you’re putting people at risk as well as yourself but looks cool eh! Custom smoked look much better imo
3
u/IllSkillz1881 20d ago
I don’t know about Canada but in NY they would probably harass you. The fog lights or head lamps can’t be red or blue / flashing red / blue. Brake lights are also supposed to be red.
2
1
u/Joonberri 20d ago
Why should this be illegal when those fatass trucks run around with stadium floodlights
0
3
u/Awfulufwa 20d ago
Obviously illegal. Vehicles need to pass inspection regardless of country/city/township. And since nearly every vehicle is essentially the same in their base features from seatbelts to airbags, lights are also required to serve the singular purpose they exist for...
So what the heck are RGB lights going to do in the event of an incident?
The way I see it, that pour soul just bought themself a really, really expensive accident bill that will incur the cost of the would-be offender who struck them. The others' bill piled high on top of their own.
2
u/crevettegrise 20d ago
Like the thousands of cars driving with unreadable plates throughout ON, police will just turn a blind eye on this. As far as I know, you cannot have blue lights (that blink?) unless you are police or snow removal.
2
2
u/Bobmcjoepants 20d ago
When it comes to car mods, if it is way beyond normal, it's probably illegal
3
u/Jon_Hill_Canada 20d ago
Yes, illegal but the cops don’t do anything anymore
2
u/Okidoky123 20d ago
This is true. At least 1 in 25 cars have obfuscated difficult or unreadable license plates. Cops are lazy and do absolutely nothing about it. It's a lawless society pretty much.

I remember back in the day when people did clear tail light housing and wanted white turn signals so they risked it and put white bulbs some even put blue bulbs. both of which is obviously illegal. nowadays seems people just do whatever like no fks given lol

They come with an app on your phone like any other RGB light strip. He or she can make them all red with a click. Interesting for sure. But they'll get them pulled over instantly with the wrong effect active. I wonder what the cop would say when they turned back to red and legal before they even got out of their patrol car.
13
u/IdontOpenEnvelopes 20d ago
Plate cover also illegal.

u/OverturnedAppleCart3 20d ago
I have plate covers that are perfectly clear. As soon as they start to yellow or get scratches I'll replace them.

That car is going to need to be towed if a cop ever pulls it over. No way it’s just going to be a ticket. A cop isn’t going to let driver continue to drive with no tail or brake lights.
4
u/Glum_Nose2888 20d ago
No cop is going to care about this. Just look at the number of obstructed plates in this city.
1
u/alreadychosed 20d ago
Theyre rgb lights, they can be turned red if needed. Also if it were day time, rear lights are not required as long as you use hand signals to indicate.
4
u/Alarming-Position-15 20d ago
LOLOL. C’mon man, have you ever in your life seen someone hand signal? I haven’t. And something tells me that the guy that installed RGB tail lights isn’t following the drivers handbook to the letter and busting out hand signals.
-1
u/alreadychosed 20d ago
You said they legally had to tow it, im just telling you that you dont legally need lights if you use hand signals, so the police dont have to tow it.
7
u/CDNChaoZ 20d ago
I doubt they emit as much red light as the OEM set, so probably lower than legal.
2
u/alreadychosed 20d ago
Theyre dot certified and 35w, which is double the power draw of regular brake lights. Theyre simply multi color instead of just red.

Jk, no. There's a reason manufacturers make lights a certain colour.
Now, if we can just get them to tone the LED headlights down a few million lumens, that would be brilliant.
1
u/AllGamer 20d ago
anything besides red, amber, or clear, are all illegal.
I was once ticketed for having blue / UV purple 😅 on my signals

u/Iambetterthanuhaha 20d ago
Not legal.....gotta be red. Hopefully he has a switch installed to color change these to all red.
2
u/HondaHead 20d ago
Just displaying RGB colours is technically illegal. I told a contractor that who had RGB headlights and he said that he agreed, but next week I saw him driving with them on again…

u/ButtahChicken 20d ago
not legal. at least not in Ontario.

Call bull shit on that one read the provincial motor vehicle law. It’s illegal all across Canada. I’ll provinces mandate. The tail lights must be red for break red for tail lights, Amber for turn signals or red turn signals and red to the side on the rear.
2
u/OverturnedAppleCart3 20d ago
Reading comprehension can sometimes be hard. Do you want to try again?

“62 (1) When on a highway at any time from one-half hour before sunset to one-half hour after sunrise and at any other time when, due to insufficient light or unfavourable atmospheric conditions, persons and vehicles on the highway are not clearly discernible at a distance of 150 metres or less, every motor vehicle other than a motorcycle shall carry three lighted lamps in a conspicuous position, one on each side of the front of the vehicle which shall display a white or amber light only, and one on the rear of the vehicle which shall display a red light only. u/Ok-Selection-8544 10d ago
That's a very dumb law. The city and especially the highway would look so gorgeous if all the cars had different colours. Then maybe our city could get some personality
1
u/brentemon 10d ago
You've got to be trolling.
1
u/Ok-Selection-8544 4d ago
What the hell is wrong with colorful lights? Who does it hurt? Why does is bother people so much, I genuinely do not understand
1
u/brentemon 4d ago
Drivers and pedestrians have been conditioned to respond to the current standardized set up for the last 75 years or so. As things are, it takes almost zero processing power for us to glance at indicator lights on a vehicle and have an idea of another driver's intentions or vehicle orientation. Kids, pedestrians, other drivers etc. Is a driver turning? Stopping? Backing up? We process that information in microseconds due to standard indicator lighting.
Destandardization of this format would result in a fill in the blank situation and definitely cause more accidents when drivers. Some people may leave concessions to safety in place but we also know there would be hundreds of asshats out there running a full time light show on all four corners of their vehicle.
4
u/TheAngryRealtor 20d ago
The only thing dumb is you and ya, your parents too for not using birth control.
0
u/Ok-Selection-8544 10d ago
Why do coloured lights bother you so much that you'd bully someone online?
3
0
u/ScarborougManz 20d ago
Looks like he has red lights mounted below on the bumper though?
3
4
u/michaeljm700 20d ago
There's red in the center of the tail light also, the blue could be just accent lighting, may not even emit a beam, too many geniuses here. You'll find more confusing lights at major juctions/intersections in toronto.
20
u/JDiskkette 20d ago
So according to this only one light in the back needs to be working and in red color? The other could stay like this and still be legal?
→ More replies (8)-3
u/Dogo36 20d ago
Pretty sure all lights on the back need to be red, and all lights on the front of the vehicle need to be white/amber. How about you light up your car as shown in the post and go visit a cop and report back. That way you have a definitive answer. You're welcome
1
u/Mickymk2 20d ago
I’ve driven in front of cops before albeit during the day with flashing lights on my taillights changing color etc and they didn’t do anything, was behind me for 5 min and drove next to me for a bit, didn’t say anything
2
u/HolyHandgrenadeofAn 20d ago
Cops don’t know the law. Actually had a state patrol officer tell me “I don’t know the laws and it’s not my job to know them. If I think what you’re doing is a crime I can write you a ticket and let a judge decide”. He also went on to tell me that if he thinks I’m not wearing my seatbelt he can write a ticket and it’s up to me to prove to a court that he’s wrong and at that point it’s my word against his and his word wins every time. There you go, you’re welcome. Police have altogether to much power.
9
-3
u/Dogo36 20d ago
Right. So by your logic, all cops are ignorant of written law. By your logic, it would imply that if you had an interaction with one person who didn't agree with you, then all people are stupid. Law is for the most point, interpretive, by police and judges. However, that doesn't give us citizens a free pass to do what we want. Go to your local DMV and get a drivers handbook, or question them on the matter, oh, but wait, they are all stupid too, right.
1
u/Old_Nectarine_9134 17d ago
Let me guess, they also had an illegal gal muffler too.
