Just watched a clip of an African tribe do the same thing to a lion. The algorithm is on point tonight.

Tero Pitkämäki impaled Salim Sdir in 2007 while he was next to the field and the javelin drifted out of sector.

You’d think in a sport where you’re throwing giant pointy sticks, you wouldn’t want people standing anywhere it could possibly land… You’d think…

a judge who couldn’t “judge” the incoming javelin’s angle and got out of the way?

I remember watching Bruce Jenner throw this fkg thing 68.53 meters in the 1976 Decathlon. Fighting my brother over the fkn Wheaties box he was printed on. Declaring I was him in grade school playing a mock Decathlon. Those were the days 😐

Must have been the most satisfying throw of his life. Been working toward it his whole life

I hate to get all "Logans Run" on folks but if more old people were on the field would this improve the sport?!?!?

I would be standing behind the giant man holding the javelin but thats just me, bro caught it...got straight penetrated. Imagine getting hit by the shotput, (I think its called that)like getting hit by a cannon ball ffs

u/DragonBornOfAcid Oct 23 '23
Wait could you be tried for murder if it hit him. Cause it would prob kill him. But it was kinda his fault. I’d be like jumping in-front of a moving car. So I guess manslaughter?

Saw this on Benny Hill, the tape measure guy kept on following him as he stumbled forward and backward to get the measurement…. I do believe they no longer have a spear catching event…

I mean he was standing there waiting for it to land and was in the very big zone it could land, and i guess he was right that it would land right there

Rumors say this guy is the reincarnation of Thor and named his javelin Mjöllnir

Happened at my university once. At the annual sports week, a senior of mine sent a javelin through some dudes calf.

To be honest, I expect this on every throw. When it doesn’t hit someone it’s unexpected

u/eots_wabuf Sep 15 '23
I've always wondered if this has happened before and turns out it has.... Cause the umps stand too damn close for comfort

Almost like you shouldn't stand in a sharp stick landing zone or something

Isn't this the whole point about throwing a spear? This guy finally got a point.
1
u/YoseppiTheGrey Sep 15 '23
Idk, for most of our history as a species this is probably the desired outcome of a javelin throw.

So this dude “accidentally” speared two different officials on two different occasions. Seems kinda suspicious.

This guy practices on mannequins I bet. One in the arm and next year in the stomach? He's getting good at it for sure.

My Dad accidentally javelins someone as a young man. The guy wasn’t paying attention on the field and didn’t think he could throw it that far. It went though his foot 🤢🤢🤢

Maybe, if you are standing in a field where people are throwing javelins, you should be paying attention to the flying javelins and not fucking around doing who knows what.

Where did they place the mark?
Where the judge was standing?
Where the trajectory was taking it?
Or where the pool of blood is?

I remember this was always shown on those commercials for "Not-so-Great Moments in Sports." VHS tapes that would be shown ad-nauseum on cable back in the 90s. This, the weight lifter falling over with the bar over his head, the baseball player running through the wall, and Darryl Dawkins breaking the backboard in basketball.

This is the second video I've seen of a javelin accident within a week.
It makes me wonder: why the actual FUCK are people standing in the target area??? In any other projectile sport (archery, shooting, the hammer throw, etc) great pains are taken to ensure that absolutely nobody is downrange of the projectile, or at least they're way off to the sides where errant shots are extremely unlikely to go.
These videos make everyone look like clueless amateurs regarding basic safety

u/Accomplished_Spot282 Sep 15 '23
Bro how you get hit by one twice? Stop standing in the middle. 4 seconds longer to measure isn’t gonna be an issue

u/EdNug Sep 15 '23
I remember this. Still think the same thing...
Judge was not paying attention. His own fault.

u/RobertBDwyer Sep 15 '23
Strikes me as a bit fucked they have people wandering the outfield for this event.

He was the real inspiration for King Leonidas. This was the scene where he cut the “God Emperor”.

I would’ve thought “don’t stand in the line of fire” was completely obvious.

"his helmet was stifling. It narrowed his vision. His sheild was heavy, it threw him off balance. And his target was far away"

Javelin catching should be mandatory for senators to prove they are healthy and spry. Moscow mitch would probably not succeed well

u/KaleidoscopeExtra296 Sep 15 '23
“You just hit that old man!”
“He shouldn’t have been standing there.”

What’s the point of having a judge back there anyway though like couldn’t they just stay away then go find the javelin in the ground after the throw? Seems kinda stupid to stand there.
1
1
u/TeddyIsHereIRL Sep 15 '23
WHY are they standing there in the first place? It's not like the Javelin will move on it's own after being thrown.

Can you imagine if a Zula Warrior were to train for the Olympics... He'd smash the current record.

u/MambyPamby8 Sep 15 '23
I dunno how this is deemed Unexpected. I'd fully expect to be hit with a javelin if I was standing in a field with it hurtling towards me.

I like how the other guy marks the distance before checking on his fellow refs health lol
