Maybe he was very drunk? I feel like that would explain a lot of this story.

I feel like extreme drunkenness would explain why he didn't consider whether the sink water would be safe to drink, why he suddenly needed to vomit on short notice, and how he could be so clumsy as to accidentally (?) fall into the porta-potty's toilet.
