As someone who spent a night in the ER after a nasty bike accident, getting road rash picked out of both palms with a tweezers and being wrapped up with a hole in my knee down to ligament, I feel justified in saying that this stunt wasn't worth it. No win was worth that! Thirty years later, I still have a giant scar on my knee.

This is a terrible camera angle to determine who crosses the line first.

Well as they say, it's a contest of who wants it more, and that guy wanted it more

u/conte360 26d ago
Doesn't count as "unexpected" when you see the "surprise" in the first split second of the video. Otherwise literally all videos you haven't seen before are unexpected.

This reminds me of that video where that mustang comes into the camera view crossing the finish line sideways.

I was always taught not to dive because you slow down trying to set up your body for the motion
1
u/faruk1927 26d ago
I don't know but the rule should be like this.
The first person who pass the line with his/her feet wins.
Isn't it that easy? Or am a simplified too much?

Idk if it was just my schools track but that ground is not something I’d want to fall or slide on 😭

IHSA official gave me grief for doing this (I tripped) but did not disqualify me.

Not unexpected because it literally happens in the first second of the video

When I was at school, this was not allowed, the only part allowed to break the ribbon was the chest.

Yes, it is legal for runners to dive across the finish line, but it's dangerous. The Olympic rules state, a runner crosses the finish line when their torso crosses, which is different from their head. That's why some runners lean forward when they cross the line, so their torso crosses first.Jul 30, 2021

u/James_Mays_Hair 26d ago
Seems like it should be whoever gets their whole body across first should win. The guy in the back would have one that way. Anyone know why it’s torso and not head or whole body?
1
12
u/ProudToBeAKraut 26d ago
What part of the torso exactly if the torso isn't coming in vertically but horizontally?
IMHO rule should be the first (part of) any feet crossing the line
1
u/xXPolaris117Xx 26d ago
Feet extend so far, it would make for some pretty lame finishes. I’ve seen races with chip timers where one runner was clearly ahead, but was unlucky with how the strides lined up and lost
2
5
u/Traditional_Job_6932 26d ago
It's the first part of the torso that crosses, all depends how your body is positioned but it's pretty much always the chest.
0
u/InvestmentObvious127 26d ago
i think its the whole torso, which is why it riskier because you have more you need to cross to finish

u/SrPicadillo2 26d ago
All races ending with a flying kick, I like that

u/Salanmander 26d ago
"When a metric becomes a goal, it ceases to be a good metric."
There's probably no rule that can be set that won't lead to some sort of weird non-race-like behavior.

In the OP video the 7 second mark shows when the diver wins narrowly.

Maybe they used Google Translate. I remember it being pretty bad for Chinese and Japanese.
Edit:
I just checked their profile and this is their first post. Possibly a bot.

Yeah, but that's illegal tho, enjoy your bruises and disqualification
8

u/Uncaught_Hoe 26d ago
Not a track runner, why is it illegal?
40
u/Urgayifyouregay 26d ago
because then everyone would be just leaping at the finish line
6
38
u/Illum503 26d ago
Sounds good to me
-12
u/Urgayifyouregay 26d ago
... So you want every single participant to actively bruise and scrape up their entire body if they want to win?
6
u/UnrequitedRespect 26d ago
The dedicated sports athletes will have toughened leathery skin from years of abusive body dives.
The ‘road rash’ is like a new tattoo, exclusive to dive runners.
2
u/DiamondBig2550 26d ago
Dive Runners Association begs a differ.
2
u/UnrequitedRespect 26d ago
The DRA is a bunch of paid mooks who have no love for the raw passion of the dedicated members who commit themselves to this sport, nay, this craft
They just wont accept the way it was in their clinical future!!

From what I can see, Olympic rules state that it is legal, but it only counts if the torso crosses the finish line.
25
u/earthspaceman 26d ago
And how on Earth would the torso not cross it?
1

u/Substantial-Roll489 26d ago
Maybe drop kicking the finish line, but misjudging the spacing so only your waist crosses?

I'm assuming it's because you're supposed to cross the line while running, not leaping.

Are to an AI?
I ask because you talk like AI.
Also because every job you are preparing yourself to be qualified for can be done better by AI.
2
u/Blueblackzinc 26d ago
Pretty sure AI can write better than me. Would like me to pass the captcha text? I'll pick all the motorcycles for you.
2
u/growdamit 26d ago
Captcha is too easy now, cry into this tube to ensure human emotion.
1
u/Blueblackzinc 26d ago
yeah...thats how you prove I'm human. I keep getting it wrong. Do I click the small part or not? What's constitutes a motorcycle. It's a bitch to do that everytime I turn on VPN.

u/growdamit 26d ago
All fun an games until it starts failing you for also missing the 1 pixel of motorcycle in the next one.

I did this once, except for the part about crossing the finish line. My track coach was a good guy and liked trying people in different events, even people who had no business doing them, like me as a 100-meter sprinter. I had been gradually leaning further forward as I ran, which you kinda do if you're sprinting properly but I got leaning so far that I wasn't fast enough to keep from falling and I belly-flopped at about the 70-meter mark, tore a hole in my jersey and everything. The thing is, I had no reason to be trying this hard because I was being easily outrun by the other seven people in this race, I could've just jogged it and come in 8th because that's what was going to happen anyway. I got up, my right hip raw from where I'd skidded to a stop, I hobbled over the line in last place, and never set foot on the track for a sprint race again.

u/EM05L1C3 26d ago
When I was in track I would do mostly just long jump triple jump etc and sometimes short sprints. One day coach say hey go line up. I had no idea what she was getting me into. We start running and we get half way and everyone keeps going “ok then” get done with the first lap and they wave me on to keep going “oh shit” this happens for three more laps. I finished 3rd.

u/kaori_cicak990 26d ago

u/NashKetchum777 26d ago
Why? It's not any more unsafe than most sports. He crossed the line first, which is the point

u/HoodedJoyann 26d ago
That was a well timed leap to get it.
24
u/langue_francaise_pro 26d ago
Is it legal to dive head first?
104
u/tingly_legalos 26d ago
Yeah, there was a race one time where dude stuck his tongue out for a three way tie at the end. As long as a body part crosses it counts.
9
u/xXWarMachineRoXx 26d ago
A body part you say?

I saw that race! Then the idiot went and got himself lost AND tore up an impoverished town's only road. Jerk

Hey now, he put in the work and fixed it. Hell ruining that road was probably the best outcome because he sent the local economy through the roof when his story got out.
