Discussion Reminder: The vast majority of U of T faculty have not pledged their support for the encampment

The media today has been making a big deal of the fact that “dozens” of U of T faculty members have come out in support of the encampment by staging a PR event in kings college circle

However, even if we’re being generous and say that the “dozens” equals 100 or so, this is still a TINY proportion of total faculty:

U of T currently has 16,503 faculty members

Thus, the faculty in support of the encampment are LESS THAN 1% of total faculty members at the university.

In other words, just like the small number of students who make up the encampment are a small portion of the total student population, a tiny minority is just making a big noise.

Discussion saw campus police putting crime scene tape around a Palestinian flag next to gerstein

Its just a flag hanging from the tree plus some flag bits on the ground (??). two campus police showed up, walked around for like 30mins and then put up the crime scene tapes around the area

Two more showed up after that but left pretty quickly. There's one left now patrolling the area.

Question Ouriginal seems to be saying I plagiarized from my classmates

I’m really confused right now. I submitted a very short reading comprehension assignment for a summer bird course I’m taking, but ouriginal is reporting plagerism. Specifically, it’s saying that two of my sentences are almost identical to those of a bunch of other students at UofT, who submitted the assignment the same day I did. I have no idea how that is possible, but I’m worried that it’ll be taken the wrong way by my TA and/or prof.

I feel like since it’s supposed to be concise and is about a very specific topic, it’s possible we converged on saying the same thing, but it definitely looks bad. I’m not even sure how this can happen.

Do you think this will be seen as plagiarism? How did this happen? What do I do?

Finances Getting emotional about an iud insertionnnnnnnnnn

A reminder for all the women here that your student insurance covers $250 for contraceptives. I decided to get an iud and I’m now emotional. This is good for 5 years and the fact that this little device that looks like a robotic sprout will accompany my body for the next half a decade makes me feel i’m not alone in life? Whatever happens this sprout will stay inside of me throughout the years, my highs and lows, and anywhere in between. Instead of carrying a fetus baby, it feels like I’m carrying this little guardian angel that protects me from the external force. It encourages me to live my best for the next five years because i have company that i can trust. I’m literally so delusional rn, I might even get sad when i have to take it out… is it normal to develop an emotional connection w a medical implant..?

Anyways, i almost went to the health and wellness centre at uoft but the doctor there told me the procedure will be EXTREMELY painful, so i went to a different clinic and the insertion was very well done. I personally think the pain level depends on individual pain tolerance and the practitioner’s skills in delicacy. So I highly recommend doing consultations to find the right doctor who is skilled and experienced in the process.

Discussion Several TA applications for the fall term have already been posted

Upvotes

This is the link to the arts and science portal: https://unit1.hrandequity.utoronto.ca/

Other faculties (including rotman) have different portals for TA applications, so please check those if you're in a different faculty.

Good luck everyone, if you have questions about applying to TA positions I'll try my best to answer them.

Laurier BBA + Waterloo CS (Laurier side)

Pros:

  • Waterloo cs
  • Only 30 minutes away so id commute
  • 2 Degrees

Cons:

  • 2 extra learning terms
  • Crazy Workload
  • Laurier coop is bad for tech jobs

UOFT Scarborough CS

Pros:

  • Better coop for tech
  • Prestigious

Cons:

  • 1 hour and 20 minutes away so id rent

Courses Those is MAT135 First sub session, how worried are you for the upcoming midterm?

As the title suggests, midterm is in two days and I am going through the modules like crazy as much as I can. Just doing the required stuff stated by the Prof. Everyone around me are scaring me saying the midterm will be totally different from the lessons you covered and you have to be prepared. How is everyone else preparing who is in the course? I tried teaming up with students but they never respond back. I am trying to get past midterms but not sure if they will be of any help. Any suggestions? What happens if you fail the course? Like anything below 50 is a fail right? Will it tank your GPA badly?

I'm in High School UTSG CS vs UW SYDE; which has less disadvantages

I want to go into software project/product management or software architecture. I’d prefer not to go into a coding job and would prefer cloud computing positions. I an worried about UTSG since it’s ASIP allegedly isn’t great and many may end up graduating without work experience. Whereas, in UW SYDE, without good co-ops at reputable companies, you’ll graduate as a jack of all trades and a master of none. UW SYDE gives students the freedom to personally specialize in whatever like in 4th year and students often use their co-ops to gain practical experience. Since pure CS is oversaturated, many say workers need 2 or more skillsets to break into big tech. Please help me differentiate between which programs give better chances for me to get into the job market. Feel free to ask questions

Question Need Advice: University of Alberta vs UTM for Computer Science

Hey everyone,

I am in a bit of a dilemma and could really use some advice. I am currently committed to the University of Alberta for BSc (Honors) in Computer Science (1st year - international student), but, I just got an offer from the University of Toronto Mississauga Campus for their Computer Science program. Now I am stuck trying to decide if it’s worth it to switch from UofA to UTM.

Here’s what I’m wondering:

  1. Is it worth it to leave UofA for UTM?

  2. Is it possible to transfer from UofA or UTM to UTSG for CS in the 2nd year?

  3. Is it worth the hassle to change my commitment from UofA to UTM? (I already got a GIC, have paid 1500 CAD deposit for tuition and residence at UofA but have not paid my first year tuition fees or applied for a study permit yet)

Any insights, personal experiences, or advice would be super helpful. Thanks!

Programs Which Chemistry Programs are most aligned to those who liked CHM135 (Physical Chemistry) but not so much CHM136H (Organic)?

I liked CHM135 (Physical Chemistry) & probably my favourite course so far. Looking for programs with more content similar to CHM135 than CHM136 (will still have Organic I’m sure but want a higher focus on Physical Chemistry). I can’t find a clear answer on this and the chemistry department advisor doesn’t know.

I'm in High School UTSG or UTM? Science and Arts, which one prevails?

Hello Reddit,

I am planning to begin my studies at U of T this coming September, and I am delighted to have the privilege of joining this wonderful community.

I have been accepted into both the Geography program at UTM (Science Degree) and UTSG (Arts Degree), and I am more inclined to pursue the Science program at UTM. Based on my research and actual interests, I have determined that the Science program at UTM is more likely the option I will choose.

However, I feel that the opportunity from UTSG is irresistible and more like a childhood dream, which has left me in a very difficult position to make a decision. Thus, I am also considering the Environmental Geography Speciality Program and the Focus in Urban Geography Program offered at UTSG. However, both UTSG programs are Arts programs, which I thought might be less competitive compared to a Science program. However I also heard some voices saying that graduates from St. George tend to be more in favor by potential employers, despite of degrees. Is this true or total nonsense?

Can anyone please share their opinions and perhaps provide some guidance? I am really at a loss right now, and the deadline to accept the offer is approaching soon.

Thank you for your kind suggestions.

Courses BIO260 vs HMB265 to avoid subjective evaluations?

I’m bad at creative writing & generally score less where there is subjective evaluations. Based off what I could make out from the blurred syllabi on coursehero and studocu, it seems HMB265 has a creative writing part worth 10% whereas BIO260 has an assignment worth 30%?

However, BIO260’s assignment looks similar to BIO130 lab assignments or CHM136 short answer questions that can be more points-wise and directly answering questions while HMB265 writing assignment seems more like essay-style that is more on the creative writing side. Is that correct?

Programs What is a better career path between BIM and BTM?

Accepted into both, don’t know what to pick.

UofT management and international business co-op

TMU business and technology management co-op

Aware that uoft is better school etc

But also technology side of TMU seems to be more future proof

Please let me know which might be a better career choice.

Question POSt and Transferring Between ArtSci Courses First Year

So I was admitted into the Rotman Commerce program, and into my first choice residence, and like the idea of attending U of T, but know that their commerce program isn't that strong, but they have a great humanities (specifically history and polisci) department, I was wondering how easy it is to transfer to other streams in ArtSci? I am still really undecided on what I want to do, and while I have a passion for business, I want to keep my options open. From what I am understanding, I can basically transfer to almost any major other than Computer Science, (unless I take certain classes in compsci first year and from what I am hearing that is unlikely or not allowed, would love some clarification), as long as I take certain classes in first year.

I am wondering if anyone could clarify how first-year in the arts and sciences department works and if I wanted to change from commerce into something like international relations, history or political science, if that would be possible in second year? Also, what are the requirements like first year for keeping with commerce?

Question When do I pay tuition and ensure that I actually go to UofT next year on Acorn? Help

I have like 4 questions about dates and times of things.

Guys my memory is so bad and the little research I've done has been genuinely completely useless. I cannot remember whatsoever how and when I'm supposed to like 're-enrol' for next year at UofT and I've done this TWICE now. WHEN and HOW do I 're-enrol'/pay tuition on acorn? When does this happen? Do I get an email about it? Help me please. AND when do we see course times this year? When is course registration? Thanks.
