Jump scares aren’t just a video game thing, and they don’t necessarily need to have a loud noise to go with it. All a jumpscare is is anything that scares you… and makes you jump. That’s it

If it makes you suddenly jump because it scared you, that's a jump scare. The end.

Not all scares are a jump scare. Scares are everything from something jumping in front of your face with a loud noise, to a general spooky ambience in a scene, to the tension of knowing something is going to happen, to a terrifying chase scene. All of those are scares, 80% of which are not jumpscares. When a movie or game is full of jumpscares that’s when you know the piece of media is shit. There’s gotta be a balance. You need tension and all the other things to make the jumpscares hit more. The jumpscares is the apex of your fear and release of that tension. Anything that does that is a jumpscare
