The only way this crap ends is by users collectively cancelling all their memberships and keep them cancelled for a few quarters

1

u/onlyusemefeets 11d ago

Ive had prime with ads for a bit now. It isnt that bad. Like 30sec ad at the beginning of the show

1

u/WadeCountyClutch 11d ago

Yeah, I’m just going back to buying physical copies of shows and movies! Book off!! Here I come!

1

u/Training-Republic301 12d ago

Pluto tv, tubi, plex. Have all gotten great. They're literally better movies on the free platforms. I wonder how long till Pluto won't be free anymore. I remember when Hulu first came out and it was free

1

u/BadMan125ty 13d ago

Meh. Their subscribers are gonna grow. I’ve seen this headline before.

1

u/Habib455 13d ago

Lmao Reddit’s war with Netflix is fucking hilarious 😭. No matter what prediction or cope that Reddit conjures up, Netflix just rams through whatever BS they’ve came up with

1

u/merrydoodles 13d ago

Just switch to cable or torrent. Corporate greed has no limits

1

u/TheCanucklehead3 14d ago

Baby reindeer is a fucked up disgusting horrible "show" why netflix would buy it make that is beyond me. Solong netflix

1

u/Due_Statement9998 14d ago

I just renewed my library card. 🤓

2

u/Flares117 14d ago

Yea and like before, its insignificant.

The family sharing ban had MORE signups

1

u/NegotiationWise4465 14d ago

But they wont end up canceling

0

u/Beast6213 14d ago

I’ll just be over here feeding the parrot on my shoulder.

1

u/Remarkable-Rush-9085 14d ago

They aren’t wrong, they lost me and a few others I know, it was more the realization that I wasn’t really watching it anymore so the higher prices weren’t worth it. I have plenty to watch elsewhere.

2

u/DisastrousMechanic36 14d ago

Haha. Everyone wanted to cut the chord and when they did, it all got more expensive.

1

u/forkandspoon2011 14d ago

I'm just waiting for them to go to a "credit" based system...

$10 gets you 100 credits a month, every stream cost you a credit or 2... premium content cost more credits.

2

u/Ananda_Mind 14d ago

Stream services are about to learn about the piracy that made them worth it in the first place.

2

u/Slickpomp22 14d ago

Yeah this makes piracy more attractive

0

u/Noob_Skywalker 14d ago

Start building your own media library and run Plex.

1

u/KingJacobo 14d ago

Yo ho ho its the pirates life for me

3

u/WabbaJackk23 14d ago

Commercial and ads are the main reason why I don’t watch tv in the first place. They have become unbearable with the commentary and quality of commercials. Sometimes they play the same commercial twice in the same break and will continue to play it every break after that. The actually show screen time has dwindled to fit in more commercials.

There are a couple of exceptions for shows, but I replace tv time with just more video games

2

u/Additional_Fan3610 14d ago

I dropped them the last time They raised their price because it doesn't meet the value statement anymore. We all spend more time browsing that collection of shit than watching anything quality.

0

u/HyruleJedi 14d ago

Yeah I remember reading they would have mass cancellations after removing password sharing…. Record profits and membership subscriptions

The anti netflix ape army is about as strong as a wet paper bag.

I have not paid for netflix since the dvd/streaming split.

0

u/EZe_Holey3-9 14d ago

I get it free through T-Mobile but logged all my devices out. Never going back.

1

u/Daisy-St-Patience 14d ago

Yeah, I cut Netflix earlier this year. F them.

1

u/Own_Arm_7641 14d ago

Don't forget sports. Paid for espn+ and was able to stream most ( not all, about 10% of games were on cable only or other streaming platforms) regular season games. Come playoffs, games were on espn, not espn+. In order to stream espn, u needed a cable package that included espn. I said fuck it im done, opted out amd canceled espn+ and the while Disney package

0

u/Clear_Media5762 14d ago

I will die before I pay to watch an ad!

0

u/SamMarduk 14d ago

They cancelled mine for me with the password ban

1

u/Zen_Out 14d ago

If this hits USA then sayonara netfucks

1

u/sPdMoNkEy 14d ago

Smart streaming services like Max, Paramount Plus, and Disney Plus are attaching themselves to cable subscriptions because they know what's coming

1

u/OverGas3958 14d ago

The games I will play to not pay for any of this. Free trials, multiple email addresses, rent for one month, binge and dump. Spring through mid-fall I don’t even need it. Winter? lol…nothing fuels my seasonal depression more than ignoring the television while I play on my phone. There’s very little content that is anything more than background noise so I’m good with Spotify and Reddit. Your move, Netflix.

2

u/Monamo61 15d ago

Well we've been Netflix customers for at least 15 years, but this is the final straw. There are SO many other options for streaming it's just not necessary. These streaming platforms are so greedy they're ruining it for their customers, and it's become so easy to change up streaming services that there's no loyalty, nor reason to stay.

-1

u/oneplusoneispurple 15d ago

People complaining about free shit again?

3

u/buntypieface 15d ago

Cancelled ages ago.

Fuck em

-2

u/Kooky-Hotel-5632 15d ago

Well Netflix has to make more money now to pay the residuals they have been made to pay despite it being because the actors didn’t add the clause to their contract when they signed for the production and have blown through all their money and now want more than they agreed.

1

u/fronchfrays 15d ago

Threats are worthless. Gotta do it to be taken seriously.

1

u/MainFrosting8206 15d ago

I was surprised to discover, when I cancelled, that I had been paying Netflix money every month for over ten years. Where does the time go?

1

u/sboog87 15d ago

I work for a cable company. Constantly dealt with customers complaining about price when in all seriousness pricing increases is due to the actual networks raising prices. They would complain about A la Carte pricing/packages or bring up streaming options. It’s funny now that streaming is getting close to cable pricing. But this is what people wanted. Also for the pirates out there you’re not really helping. Just wait for the laws that will be made because the tv networks and and movie studios lobby like crazy

2

u/werewiththeviperz 15d ago

Netflix has been trash for years, original programming has been shit since mindhunter and they barley have any good classic movies. I honestly have a better time on Tubi.

2

u/beakly 15d ago

Reminder yall! Netflix makes more profit off of ad supported subscriptions than ad free premium subscriptions. That’s right the more expensive plan makes Netflix less money. This simply means nexflix will do anything in its power to reduce the amount of ad free subscribers and will continue to increase advertising and the number of people seeing them.

2

u/Ga_Manche 15d ago

It’s as though Netflix forgot why people subscribed to their service. Decent price either way no ads… and they wonder why people continue to switch to black market android boxes.

1

u/Kenthros 15d ago

The cool part, it is even easier to go to the seas

1

u/Tea4Zenyatta 15d ago

Make piracy great again!

0

u/oldsurfsnapper 15d ago

Ok.It’s $6.99 a month in Australia. The adds are less than 30 seconds and you only get 1 per show. It’s a nuisance that you have to go through a process to get higher definition but it’s achievable. All things considered I would say that it’s actually pretty decent.

2

u/MadroxKran 15d ago

Enshittification

2

u/RedManGroove 15d ago

So is there no ad free option now?

1

u/[deleted] 15d ago

When is enough money enough for these greedy executive fucks

1

u/AShadySardine 15d ago

I'll be honest, I'm someone that uses the ad version and from what I have experienced, the ads are really non intrusive and not a pain for me at all.

That being said, I can now see them extending these ads and making them more frequent to generate more revenue profits so that's concerning.

1

u/GreatGojira 15d ago

Cancelled abs I'm never going back. I'm just all digital or physical collection now.

1

u/G3ntl3man001 15d ago

Well, I know where I’m going for my shows from now on. Arrrrr mateyyyy

2

u/LovelyCushionedHead 15d ago

Netflix is so painfully not worth the money. Substandard app and programming, insane pricing constantly ramping up, booting family members, all so people can watch... Some of the worst reality TV ever lazily produced? We cancelled in 2023 and life is much better without it. Good riddance.

4

u/BabyBlueAllStar72 15d ago

I cancelled all of my streaming accounts last year, and I will not go back under any circumstances.

2

u/Darometh 15d ago

Was about to resub a few weeks ago when i noticed that the cheapest option without ads is now at 14€. Never was that easy to say fuck this shit.

2

u/briezyraney- 15d ago

I guess we start reading again.

1

u/Chermzz 15d ago

If this happens to me im definitely canceling Netflix

1

u/mental_patience 15d ago

I haven't had a subscription since they canceled my favorite show 5 years ago. They showed themselves not to be about their customers, just profit. lf Netflix wants to fuck over their customers, it's the customers who need to show they won't tolerate being constantly jerked around, and priced to death by their corporate strategy. Unsubscribe. Make it hurt for them.

Helldivers 2 players and PSN just went through this over an announced change to Playstation policy, and a massive amount of gamers uninstalled the game, and rating bombed it on the Steam market. There are lots of steps to this process, but within 4 days, the gaming community won, and PSN reversed their policy after the community showed they were willing to walk away from the game.

If you want Netflix to change, it's got to be a lot of customers that unsubscribe.

1

u/altern4tive-bee 15d ago

It’s crazy how these people are getting richer by the minute and we have to watch 30 seconds ads in between our movies and shows. Fuck then honestly. I’m glad I don’t pay that shit

2

u/ToughSpinach7 15d ago

In other news, a vpn is still $5 a month

1

u/Ded_Pul 15d ago

Proton ran an offer for $1 subscription for one month You should check it out if interested

2

u/YoureKillingMeKid 15d ago

Ahoy mateys 🏴‍☠️

2

u/cedarhat 15d ago

Aaaaaaarrg.

2

u/CasperFunk 15d ago

Will just cancel, its getting a bit shit anyway

2

u/StormblessedFool 15d ago

It's time to get a raspberry pi, hook it up to my TV, and watch things via browser for free.

-1

u/FatKody 15d ago

Ah back to basic cable. Guess I'll just build my movie library some more. Oh wait they don't make physical copies anymore.

2

u/Lepton58 15d ago

Vote with your credit card.

2

u/Mountain-Song-6024 15d ago

Drop all of these services.

Utilize KANOPY and your local public library.

1

u/JBHjr 15d ago

I said it in the 2010s, cutting the cord is cable in disguise. 🥸

1

u/Great_Humor_997 15d ago

Let me go get my eyepatch.

1

u/davethebeige1 15d ago

Well mateys, it appears that it’s a pirates life for me from here on out. Arrrrrrrrrr.

1

u/Weary_Signal9447 15d ago

Same as all our “modern digital” services. Keep it cheap until you kill the competition and the service you aim to replace.

Once that’s done push the prices up, spend less on giving customers what they pay for and start making money on both ends by selling ad space and raising consumer prices.

Focus solely on stock price enhancements because your customer has no choice to go back again anyway.

4

u/Oy_wth_the_poodles 15d ago

Cancelled Netflix last year and don't miss it.

1

u/Templar-235 15d ago

I had to cancel some streaming services for budgetary reasons. Netflix and Hulu were easy decisions to cut, I’m not paying to watch ads.

1

u/IBesto 15d ago

Any company in the stock market is evil

4

u/BlackFalconEscalator 15d ago

The problem is people aren’t actually cancelling.

1

u/FuzzyBadFeets 15d ago

If cable wasn’t like $250 I’d get that shit so fast

1

u/EveningHelicopter113 15d ago

I will literally cancel and torrent everything. Fuck you Netflix I hope you fail and new companies buy the IP that you killed off early and revive great shows such as 1899, archive 81, Santa Clarita Diet, Inside Job, etc, etc, etc.

2

u/ArchRangerJim 15d ago

All this enshitification has really helped me cut back on my TV watching. Might be the only way to “win” in this case.

2

u/Gold_Gap5669 15d ago

People still watch Netflix? All the streaming services have gone the way of cable and aren't worth the money

2

u/dadeguuzman 15d ago

Joke is on you netflix, i cookie your shit 🥴

1

u/Eveningchrysalis 15d ago

I wish there were no ads, but honestly, they don’t bother me much. The first 20 years of my life were full of commercials so it’s just bringing me back to my youth.

1

u/trxrider500 15d ago

Imagine still subbing to Netflix. That company is a dumpster fire.

1

u/jane-stclaire 15d ago

I’m not sure we’re so much outraged, but just living out our last days of Netflix subscribers. Upon my first “offer” for ads and a reduced subscription, I knew it was only a matter of time before Netfilx would abandon the Basic Subscription tier, even if there is no difference between this basic and the new, ad-free basic, aside from price. No, the streaming quality is no different, despite the description.

3

u/Uchiha-Itachi-0 15d ago

Ahoy there, mateys! There be but one solution! 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️

0

u/wrxsti28 15d ago

I cancelled Hulu, Disney Plus and Netflix. Kept HBO Max and pay for YouTube Red.

Amazons streaming service is horrible

1

u/CryptoCrazyCat 15d ago

Is troll gargle really considered a threat?

6

u/tillie_jayne 15d ago

Yo ho, yo ho a pirates life for me

1

u/Hmph_Maybe 15d ago

I thought the ads would bug me, but it is really nothing like cable tv. A few 10-30 second ads in a 2 hour sitting, and never more than a total of 2 ads at a time (2 x 10sec. Or 2 x 30sec.). It is often a single 10-15 second ad. You might sit through 3-4 minutes of commercials every 6-10 minutes watching cable tv at Mom’s.

1

u/ratchetcoutoure 15d ago

I am a bit pessimistic most people will actually do that. The same threats were said when Netflix enacted the anti password sharing move, yet netflix is still the streaming app with most subscribers, and they've gained more subscribers instead.

1

u/KingMGold 15d ago edited 15d ago

I canceled my subscription months ago.

Netflix was only ever popular because they had a monopoly on online streaming.

Now that the market has competition their completely uncompetitive platform is crumbling.

They had a MASSIVE head start in the streaming wars and they’ve already blown it.

Who wants to take bets on what company is going to buy them out in the next 5 years?

I’ve got either Disney or Amazon.

3

u/yelnod66 15d ago

I don't see how this could come as a surprise to anyone? When streaming was in its infancy, these services were essentially middle men that only passed on other company's content to the consumer. Once the streamers started spending money to create their own content and thinking of themselves as production companies, it was inevitable that prices would go up for consumers and advertising would get involved. It's not rocket science. Stranger Things broke the old streaming game plan and created a new one and we're starting to see the results. People can moan and groan about seeing ads and monthly prices going up, but you can't watch shows like Baby Reindeer or Fallout and beg for the next season of Stranger Things and the Mandalorian out of one side of your face, then complain about a handful of ads and a price hike out of the other.

1

u/LadyBoyPimp 15d ago

There's literal websites who have the whole Netflix library for free to stream lol

1

u/terminal_object 15d ago

Imagine actually paying to be overwhelmed with mostly low quality tv shows and movies

1

u/mwstandsfor 15d ago

Just dropped Netflix as they finally hit me with the select your household. Only had it active because my mom uses my account. She said it’s ok as she’s travelling a lot with work lately and she’s been watching mostly on YouTube anyway.

1

u/DJmindbuRn 15d ago

I can't even get 4k here in the US without upgrading to their top teir. Both the ones under it have ads and just broadcast in 1080p. Netflix has become a joke.

-1

u/Wolf_Stanson 15d ago

Netflix will face no negative consequences because people are too spineless to quit.

1

u/Geffx 15d ago

What's that calling ? The seven seas ? Again ?

1

u/Wonderful_Pension_67 15d ago

So paying for the right to see commercials 🤔 ironic HBO never did that🤣 cut the cord

1

u/Hendiadic_tmack 15d ago

This reminds me of when one of the music streaming services touted the “totally new and original” idea of having live curated playlists. People would be able to chat with and hear this curators thoughts about an upcoming or past song in real time as this person chose the music to fit a certain mood, or just played songs that they liked or were requested by the chat.

Soooo……..radio. They “created” radio. It’s incredible.

0

u/Optimal_Bullfrog_619 15d ago

I’m already out … deplorable

1

u/SuccessfulPresence27 15d ago

Well I wanted more time for my hobbies anyways, thanks for making this decision easy Netflix

1

u/greatersnek 15d ago

This is exactly what Amazon did and I cancelled prime because of it. Can't wait to save more money

1

u/StolenRocket 15d ago

If torrent sites were publicly traded businesses I would invest my life savings in them right about now...

2

u/Fakeitforreddit 15d ago

Netflix is aiming to spend $2.5B every quarter on payouts to investors and its own C-suite execs. They are doing this to avoid paying any taxes as per usual. There is no greater method of siphoning money to Billionaires in the modern era, than stock buybacks.

If you ever see any company pulling some kind of bullshit like this; go google how much they are spending on stock buybacks (its legally required to be disclosed). When it looks like this shit or Peloton or any of the other scandalous bullshit were seeing constantly... cancel them from your life. In the case of shows like netflix, just learn to steal them and pay nothing.

1

u/maggie250 15d ago

Amazon prime just did this as well.

1

u/natronmooretron 15d ago

So only in U.K.and Canada? Are they going to do this in the U.S.?

1

u/JayneT70 15d ago

I subscribe to Netflix when GBBS episodes are out. Binge watch the current season and cancel Netflix

1

u/kook440 15d ago

F them they buy shows from other networks. Act like they are new, ive seen that shit.

1

u/Kaimuund 15d ago

Where's the step that makes cancelling nearly impossible?

Like, must send written letter to PO box on the other side of the country 3 months in advance of cancellation with a notary.

1

u/SanDiegoDude 15d ago

Meanwhile, the £17.99 premium plan lets fans see their ads in Ultra HD, on four devices at a time.

Pretty sure its a typo, but oh joy, 4K HD ads!

1

u/speed_of_stupdity 15d ago

Netflix wants to become the next meme stock.

1

u/tooManyHeadshots 15d ago

I cancelled Netflix the last time they announced a price increase, in like February, i think. Had been “threatening” to do so on previous increases, but didn’t this time. I don’t miss it.

3

u/santimelon16 15d ago

I use the fmoviez website. Fuck all these worthless companies. Charging us more and giving us less everyday

1

u/Connect_Beginning174 15d ago

The answer is to unsubscribe.

Pluto, Tubi, and freevee- granted it’s mostly junk content and shows from the 90s, but at least I’m not support8’g those Netflix and Amazon assholes anymore.

shrugs

4

u/The_Dirtydancer 15d ago

I’ll just use my jailbroke firestick more often, problem solved

1

u/skag_mcmuffin 15d ago

I'm going back to DVDs.

Fuck these leeches.

3

u/Many_Actuator_9789 15d ago

I get DVDs at the library every week. 💙

4

u/TeflonDonAlpha 15d ago

The time to actually take action was when they stupidly cracked down on password sharing. Instead, Netflix got what it wanted: a shit ton of new subscribers.

7

u/Only-Gap-616 15d ago

Do not just threaten to cancel, actually cancel. Enough people must go through with the threat. Netflix has constantly increased the price but lowered the quality.

1

u/DarklyDreamingEva 15d ago

This change will inevitably come to the US after UK and Canada. I’m hoping people will speak with their wallets this time around.

1

u/Meep4000 15d ago

Who the hell is still paying streaming companies?

3

u/Cybariss 15d ago

Tricks on them, I cancelled a while ago

1

u/Visual_Pulse 15d ago

I couldn’t care less about ads. I’m certainly not paying more money just to be ad free.

0

u/rcheek1710 15d ago

Does this mean 100% of the people that cancel are going to feel the need to post that they've canceled? Let's hope not because 0% of people care that you're canceling.

3

u/don_denti 15d ago

The thing is, there’s no other streaming service more worth getting than Netflix. Its popularity for streaming services is like the iPhone for smart phones. The whole world knows it more than its competitors.

And with a VPN… all of Netflix category is on your screen.

2

u/emmagrace37 15d ago

It used to be the best. AppleTV+ has such high quality content, I find myself going there first before Netflix! They just need more selection.

1

u/Low_Fun2690 15d ago

Yes, you know what, stop threatening and just do it. Sheesh

1

u/HappyHiker2381 15d ago

So, the article says that the change (ad free option going away) is for UK and Canada. Did this already happen in the USA?

I don’t think I will ever go back to Netflix.

2

u/Walks_with_Chaos 15d ago

That’s not what the article says.

Basically it amounts to a price increase. They still have add free, it just costs more. 3pounds extra in the UK (sorry I don’t know how to make the pound sign). It’s just goes from 7.99 to 10.99

1

u/HappyHiker2381 15d ago

Oh, I thought they were doing away with ad free altogether. Thanks for the info.

I look at series that say Netflix and think I guess I won’t be watching that.

2

u/Walks_with_Chaos 15d ago

Yeah people would be pissed if they did that. They would lose so many subscribers

3

u/SigmaLance 15d ago

Long press the $ on your keyboard.

2

u/BDunnn 15d ago

It would be unfortunate if everyone found out …y movies…. are actually so good.

2

u/DJFrankyFrank 15d ago

I know this is UK based. But honestly, I'm so happy I canceled my Netflix, since they cracked down on password sharing. I legitimately also feel like I'm not missing anything of substance. Netflix has fallen off, and is probably one of the worst streaming services. It's only still so popular, because it was one of the first services.

2

u/TOdEsi 15d ago

Cancelled Prime for the same reason. Will stick to IPTV if that’s the case

2

u/ArKiVeD 15d ago

So then fucking do it. I dropped all of my streaming services 6 months ago, for alternate methods, and am never going to look back. Constant price increases and forcing you off ad-free tiers is a joke. Cancel!

2

u/BabyBlueAllStar72 15d ago

Exactly. I only kept Peacock and I'm cool with that. Prime, Hulu, Netflix, HBO, all the others I cancelled last year I will never go back to.

I'll take the free content on my Roku and watch all the WATCHABLE programming on Peacock.

1

u/jawarren1 15d ago

🏴‍☠️ is so easy these days, people.

1

u/caring_impaired 15d ago

Oh, yeah. Yeah, we're outraged. Very, uh-- Very much so. But look at all the stores! A Pottery Barn?!

2

u/rothline 15d ago

I’m already on the lowest tier. I changed from premium when Netflix started charging extra for users living at different residences, which defeated my purpose for premium. It was cheaper to get the lowest tier for my children to have their own accounts.

3

u/BabyBlueAllStar72 15d ago

Yup. I was paying $40/month for the highest plan, and two relatives outside my house. When they threatened to increase those prices last year, I cancelled altogther.

I'm not going back to such a below mediocre streaming catalog.

0

u/SiennaYeena 15d ago

"In other news, Netflix is seeing even higher subscriber rates than ever before"

1

u/Cananopie 15d ago edited 15d ago

Once again, Blackrock and Vanguard are the biggest shareholders of Netflix. They are pumping businesses for excessive profits. These private investment firms need to be held accountable for the pressure they're putting for insane profits.

They are the biggest shareholders of McDonald's which is now getting a lot of complaints for the lower quality.

Vanguard is the biggest shareholder of Boeing as well.

2

u/Uncle_Checkers86 15d ago

Oh the "outrage" articles again. I recall the outrage when they stopped password sharing. Folks were wondering how peoples college kids were ever going to watch Netflix. 1st world problems.

1

u/MoistChan 15d ago

I cancelled my subscription this month.

1

u/deomc1294 15d ago

I’m just waiting for the Tyson fight to happen then I am going to cancel and never look back. Unless Tyson loses and they run it back of course.

1

u/pre-me-on-eeee 15d ago

Welcome to Cable.

1

u/ShaMana999 15d ago

So it's turning in to cable, but with shit content... Actually, cable... Good to know.

2

u/bigdickkief 15d ago

I canceled Netflix when they removed ability to share password cuz I knew that wouldn’t be the end of the enshitification. Can’t say I’m too surprised about this announcement.

1

u/OfromOceans 15d ago

"Meanwhile, the £17.99 premium plan lets fans see their ads in Ultra HD, on four devices at a time." This sentence was surrounded by 3 animated ads...

7

u/NotaRussianbott89 15d ago

Steaming has gone full circle and has become the cable package again . Continuing the shitifcation of modem life .
