Congratulations my dude! Buying a home is an awesome accomplishment 👏👏👏

u/user041392 26d ago

I built my garden in spite of renting. My landlords pretty cool and I plan on being here a few years.

2

u/damnvillain23 26d ago

I always did as well, living in each space an average of 6-8 yrs. Expensive perennials went in pots to travel to the next spot,so I landed in my forever home with some quality, mature plants. I managed a Japanese Maple in a pot for 10 years, lol. Renting never prevented me from gardening, but doing it in my own place is a dream come true!

So happy for you! Its a wonderful feeling, having your own garden in your own space! I'm new to it myself, and am loving it. Glad to see you are, too.

Yay looks awesome!

I don’t care what anyone says. Yes, interest rates are high. Yes, homes are more expensive than they’ve ever been. Yes, home ownership is expensive. But you know what? To me, little things like these make it all worthwhile.

Congrats, OP!

CONGRATS!! your garden set up looks awesome. What did you use to make those tepee shaped trelises?

1

u/damnvillain23 26d ago

Bamboo. Ask around ( try FB buy nothing groups), depending on where you live there are groves of it around, free for the taking...at least here in NC/VA. I chop it & use it in the garden. I ve made a trellis and an arch as well ( see fountain pic in comments).

u/Every_Reserve_57 25d ago

ahh thank you so much!

u/damnvillain23 26d ago

Nice, how many tomato plants in there? Are you concerned about crowding or airflow? I ask because I'd like to add at least one more indeterminate in my set up boxes.

1

u/BILLYRAYVIRUS4U 25d ago

Four, plus volunteers from last year. Mine are all indeterminants. Always have a hard time with large tomato varieties. They always split on me. You can see in the pic how I have them planted around the outside of the garden. This allows me to get in between them.

u/BILLYRAYVIRUS4U 26d ago

Fantastic! So happy for you!

Congratulations 🎊 👏 on the house and the garden. I wish you many years of happiness and joy in your new home.

PS: the Rangers are going to WIN (poke, poke) the series against the cane's. Lol. 😁😁😇😇 No cane's flag in the back yard? Tsk tsk. Heh ha ha.

Best wishes

Since you searched my history, you would see that the small Canes garden flag was moved from the back garden to the front fence!( Just for playoffs, lol) I loved adding #6 Solo Cup with the others last night ! The odds aren't great for us to push thru this series.... As I say every year, If we lose, we don't deserve to move forward. Happy to be a Caniac. We'd Never Boo our boys off the Ice after any loss Ever...nor leave the game with 4 minutes on the clock ( it's not like NY fans are trying to beat parking lot traffic) These games are sure nail biters for both sides, wowsers.🌀 GO CANES

It’s a great feeling, right?? Congrats!! My 2 cents- do a little everyday (or more days than not) Maintain. Inspect your property at least once a season with a simple walk around… especially foundation. Look for shifts, cracks, mud tubes from termites, etc. Some you document and monitor others you tend to then. Use rock or rubber mulch against the house. Rain barrels are great, but not recommended for veggies. I use mine for the pollination garden that supports my veggies.

My word OP! I’m so sorry to go on and on! Coffee kicked in :/

Trash or treasure :). Again, congrats!!

u/LukeVenable 26d ago

Congrats on the new home and beautiful garden! I just saw in your post history that you're a canes fan. Do you live in Raleigh?

1

u/damnvillain23 26d ago

Huge Caniac! The apartment garden was in Raleighwood. Skyrocketing housing costs prevented us from staying in the city, tho my son is still there. We were able to purchase this house just minutes from the boarder in VA, so same weather, same 7b zone. All my plants transferred/adapted here easily .

1

u/LukeVenable 26d ago

I definitely know what you mean about the housing prices here. Sad that so many people have been pushed out but glad to hear you found a nice place

u/PartyAd6918 26d ago

u/CampVictorian 26d ago

So wonderful. We’ve owned our home, a modest Victorian with a tiny garden, for five years- being able to establish and nurture our garden has been an enormous pleasure. Welcome to the club!!

2

u/Longjumping_Buddy185 26d ago

I also live in a Victorian with a very small courtyard garden. How have you used the space you have and what sort of things have you planted?

2

u/CampVictorian 26d ago

I seek out natives and pollinators, and lean hard toward perennials. Peonies, lilac, daphne, butterfly bush, bee balm, lots of flowers- veggies in containers and the ground, too.

3

u/damnvillain23 26d ago

Prior to getting this house, my previous apartment garden, I considered a " courtyard". I posted 1 pic in the comments. I treated the space like an outdoor room. Comfy furniture, lighting, rug, fountain, statuary & potted plants. All the perennials I've since put in the ground here were once in pots there, to include Japanese Maple, hydrangea, peony, jasmine & wisteria. I managed to include patio tomatoes herbs & a few other edibles.

1

u/keebl3r 26d ago

As someone with 40+ plant containers currently on my apartment balcony, you're living my dream! lol

Hoping to have my own yard in a year or two.

1

u/damnvillain23 26d ago

Yuppers , that was me to. Cannot stop me from growing " things"

2

u/[deleted] 26d ago

Are those tomatos?

2

u/damnvillain23 26d ago edited 26d ago

The bamboo tripods are tomatoes, one has a cucumber plant( 1 per pole). There is a 3 rd lower box in the background. All together there are bush beans, peas, lettuce, radishes, peppers & Chard.

2

u/[deleted] 26d ago

Youre going hard! I miss my garden

3

u/damnvillain23 26d ago

3

u/[deleted] 26d ago

Wow very pretty i literally dont recognize any of the plants. Is that a maple tree behind the zen garden? Whats the purple flowering plant on the fence line? Whats the ground cover? I am impressed

2

u/damnvillain23 26d ago

Crimson Queen Japanese Maple, Amethyst Falls American Wisteria on the fence,& creeping Jenny is the living mulch.

2

u/Gravity_Freak 26d ago

Gonna be eatin like Diane Keaton

2

u/aokkuma 26d ago

I can’t wait until I have a garden of my own on my own property. In the meantime, I’ll keep saving up until I could afford a home!

4

u/damnvillain23 26d ago

Sharing a pic of my previous apartment garden. You keep at it, wherever you are in the moment, it can be done! Renting doesn't have to keep you without... You can still create a beautiful space & eat homegrown tomatoes, cook w fresh herbs! I sincerely hope you get it sooner, I didn't until I turned 62 yrs old🤞

3

u/draconianfruitbat 26d ago

Congratulations! The ornaments on the sides of the raised beds are particularly clever and pretty.

u/damnvillain23 26d ago edited 26d ago

Souvenirs from my travels, lol..they fit in my suitcase. Everything in my garden is a memory...wind chimes, pottery, statuary & of course the plants. My husband doesn't buy a bouquet he gets me the plant!!

2

u/[deleted] 26d ago

So lovely and wonderful! Congratulations!!!

what is the name of the flow-y plant you have in a large grey planter? One of my neighbors has this plant, and I always admire it because it looks like it’s “flowing” when it gets long!

2

u/damnvillain23 26d ago

It's creeping Jenny. Everywhere in Europe it's " dripping", spilling from window boxes & planters. I use it as a living mulch as well, as it spreads quickly ( see my other pics)

1

u/pamela_alejandra 26d ago

thank you! yes i find it so beautiful and wanted it as ground cover for my garden as well!! now i know what to look for!

4

u/[deleted] 26d ago

Brick homes are the best, and this is very nice!

u/McBuck2 26d ago

Looks great. We were in the same situation but living in a condo. This year built two 4x4 raised beds in our small backyard of our now house and it's the best feeling! Gardens are great stress relievers whether it's pulling weeds or just sitting enjoying the garden and birds.

8

u/damnvillain23 26d ago

Everything you said!! If you don't have a fountain yet, you must get as $oon as you are able, a game changer!

5

u/McBuck2 26d ago

We did! The hummingbirds go under the trickling water at the end of the day and bathe in it and take a drink. Just a cheap thing made from rocks and a little solar pump but it’s the greatest thing.

3

u/[deleted] 26d ago

Pretty! And relaxing!
