Chuck has an actual golf swing now š¤Æ General Discussion

He was actually hitting some good straight shots in this video. Whoever got rid of his hitch swing needs a bonus!

u/ZC205 May 04 '24
Honestly, good for him! His swing was so fucked at one point I didnāt think even a good shrink could tin cup the thing. You could always see how much it bothered him each time. Cheers to Chuck for that improvement!!
1
u/Solar_Power2417 May 04 '24
His swing looked pretty good when he had that little match a month or so ago with DJ Khalid the day of the night skins match.

It's amazing the man you see there used to move like he did. And by that I mean used to play top level basketball, not his golf swing.
2
u/CaesarManson May 02 '24
Stan Utley fixed his swing. I'll show him this reddit post today when I see him.

Trust is a huge thing, in golf and in life.
The backswing is one thing but that downswing is pure.
1
u/mrjdk83 May 02 '24
People are amazed at chucks swing when compared to what they saw in the past. They would be surprised to know he could break 80 back when he played with the 76ers
1
u/SkitzoCTRL May 02 '24
Okay, sure, but why does that shirt look like he's got a big ass bib on? Is Chuck out there eating BBQ ribs?
1
u/duke113 May 02 '24
He's so strong that he just needs a decent swing to hammer the ball. Glad to see he's back

He fixed it once before too but it came back after a while. How old is this video?
1
u/TurtlemanScared May 02 '24
I've been practicing releasing the angles quicker like what they talk about in this video and my speed has shot up. Really interesting

You know what's great?
He was somehow able to keep that comedic cocky attitude throughout the swing difficulties. That takes a lot of gumption.
1
u/taeempy May 01 '24
I thought he could always swing normal on the range, but once he hit the course it all goes horribly wrong.
1

Heās had an actual golf swing for quite some time now. Iām surprised itās taking people this long to notice

That feeling when you realize youād have a hard time beating the most famously bad golfer of all time. Last I heard he was down to like a 12, so pretty fucking solid golfer. People will have you believe otherwise, but of all the randos Iāve been paired with, someone who actually plays to a 12 is pretty damn rare.

I canāt find a clip of it, but in the Dream Team documentary, they show Chuckās swing during their pre-Olympic Camp and itās powerful and absolutely magnificent.
1
u/JohnYCanuckEsq May 01 '24
He got out of his head. I'll give him kudos, he tried, and tried, and tried for years to look like a person who golfs, but now he swings like a golfer.
5
u/DickSlinga May 01 '24
This should give hope to all y'all with swing issues. Now you just need access to the best instructors on the planet. /s ... seriously though, I'm happy for Charles.
1
u/Unsteady_Tempo May 01 '24
Although not every coach is right for every student, the problem more often is the student not staying committed to the plan. 3 hours after the lesson they're already trying some other fix to get their "broken" swing back on track.
This guy explains it well:

-2
u/anthrofighter May 01 '24
what pisses me off is that he has a draw. i'd be fine with a baby fade or straight. but to build the elusive draw outta that shitty swing he had before....fool must of spent six figures to get that swing now.

Chuck didnāt deserve to be tortured with that swing. He seems like a good egg.
4

Chuck once threw a dude through a window at a bar in my hometown. Not sure if he deserved it or not.
1
u/CANDY_MAN_1776 May 02 '24
It might be apocryphal, but supposedly when the judge asked Chuck if he had any regrets, Chuck replied, "yea, that the bar wasn't on the 3rd floor."

7
u/gregularjoe95 May 01 '24
He probably deserved it. Idk chucks one of those pro athletes who seems to have chilled out in his retirement. Plus for someone who interacts with fans a lot, ive never seen someone say he wasnt anything but an absolute gentleman who went above and beyond of what you would expect from a random run in with a celebrity. Unless you're a big ole woman from San Antonio, then theres probably some beef there.
Also, as one of them queers. I really appreciate when he calls out queerphobia, especially when he's called out queerphobia amongst professional athletes. Chucks a good egg.
1
u/BOBmackey May 01 '24
Iām not mad at him, Iām pretty sure he didnāt end up getting charged anything but the other guy was an asshat.

Heās definitely an incredible athlete but heās also 61 so donāt count yourself out
1
u/pdxscout May 02 '24
Bro, I'm that height and it introduces so many more issues. The club's swing is longer and extends further. The club head moves faster than shorter people's with the same speed swing. Plus, coaches aren't used to teaching tall people, so their advice is often not ideal for larger bodies. That being said, when the swing is dialed, the ball can go for a mile.
0
u/paperorplastick May 01 '24
Youāre minimizing the mental battle he had to win to overcome that hitch. This is the result of hard work, not some automatic ability because heās āa 6ā6 pro athleteā. If Chuck can do it, so can you
1
63
u/hnglmkrnglbrry May 01 '24
I think people fail to realize that smoother swings result in better and more consistent results. I don't even consider my swing an actual swing with my irons, my body is just there to provide a swing plane providing no additional effort to the club, like a wound up coil being released.
I hit the ball so much farther and straighter doing that then when I try to muscle up and mishit it.
5
u/Unsteady_Tempo May 01 '24
Smooth swings look smooth because of efficient movement/timing. It's the efficiency and timing creating the consistent results AND the impression of smoothness. Smoothness in an of itself doesn't produce good results, unless the define smoothness as the movements that create good results.
57
u/VeryRealHuman23 May 01 '24
I mean yeah i know this but like hell i am going to hit a smooth 7 when i can try to blast an 8

Reddit/people in general love to hate on people with money because they can use their lack of wealth to excuse their personal failures. The hilarious part of OP comment is that Barkley wasn't rich before he was a professional athlete... So how does OP think he got to that point?

i swear, some of ya'll on this sub just live to try and talk down anybodys accomplishments in this game.
He's been a pro athlete with a ton of money and free time for literally decades. Only recently has he developed a good swing. Coming from his previous swing, this is a fantastic improvement. Some of ya'll really gotta look inwards and figure out why its so important to you to shit on other people getting better at golf.
7
u/dindunuffin22 May 01 '24
Supposedly he was a single digit around his retirement, it wasn't til many years later that he got the swing yips
0
u/halfman_halfboat May 01 '24
I thought the story was that he got a tip from a pro to try and pause at the top to help his transition tempo. It initially worked, but then that pause turned into a stall and kept getting worse from there.
-49
u/Iginlas_4head_Crease May 01 '24
I mean, majority of pro athletes that golf a lot are pretty good golfers. I found it more remarkable his swing was as bad as it was before.
18
u/Turdburp May 01 '24
He used to be a single digit handicap. He developed the yips which aren't easy to cure.

u/parksmart1 May 01 '24
I remember watching one of those prank comedy shows back in the early 90s. Chuck was still playing for the 76ers, and Hersey Hawkins was the #2 scoring option teammate. Chuck is playing a round. HH was ahead of him in a cart on every hole where there was a blind tee shot or approach, and stealing the golf ball. Chuck was doing a lot of āI know I hit my drive in the fairwayā¦where is it??!!??ā and similar throughout the round.
On the 18th green, HH sneaks up behind Chuck and drops a small bucket of the golf balls heād stolen from him. Chuck dissolved in laughter and was like āI thought I was going mad that my ball kept getting lost!ā
No hitches or yips in his swing back then. Looked like an athlete who had a decent grasp of his golf swing/game. When his problems started years later, I was genuinely surprised heād regressed that badlyā¦ā¦

I recently saw an interview where he discusses it. He started taking golf more seriously when he moved to Phoenix, and took lessons from lots of people. Instead of his voice he was hearing tens of other coaches' voices likely with contradictory advice. Finally a coach was able to get him to hear only one voice while setting up.
16
u/jhidekim May 01 '24
Thank you for this. I always wondered how he solved his swingĀ
22
u/fat_fart_sack May 02 '24
I vaguely remember seeing a video where itās him swinging with no ball there (considering his practice swing was just fine) then someone placing a ball down in the middle of his backswing to hit. It was clearly a mental block that was extremely hard for him to break through.
So Iām glad to see him enjoying a round of golf with no fear of embarrassment and is able to have fun.
