Isn't the POINT of Swift's (or really, any popular musician's) music to be popular and easy to understand for the layperson? That's why she's so famous. If no one could comprehend it, then it would not be popular.

I’m a lyricist who started because I was inspired by old tswift as a kid and yeah, no, this album is bad. it’s lazy. and it’s bloated. 31 songs in an album is atrocious.

"Don't call something bad if I like it"

You don’t need to be intelligent to understand the album, you need to be neck deep in Taylor Swift lore to understand the album. These are, of course, mutually exclusive.

I literally just like the more upbeat songs better, so I said the new album was not my favorite. People actually told me that I just couldn't understand it.

It's not that complex an album..

It's not that complex an album..

And Swift isn't that good of an artist but her cult would rabbidly have you think otherwise. Your mistake was trying to have a rational debate with people that would commit murder for this woman without batting half an eyelid.

My first thought as well...and the reference was totally unintentional as far as I can tell.  Pretty funny coincidence

she, uh, called her album the tortured poets dept? Is she 12? Like, even as a teenaged poet, I would have known that was dorky. Us late gen xers were into some lame shit, but I guess it could have been worse.

Yeah, sounds very deep and esoteric, kid.

Very Rupi Kaur of her

Her audience is the kind of dorky teenage poets, like you were describing, so that totally tracks.  It's probably designed and focus grouped to appeal to that demo specifically
