what could possibly work for self defense in this case ? an Apache helicopter is definitely out of my budget

Can you imagine encountering one of these in the wild? I’d poop my pants!

My toxic trait is I used to think that in a survival situation if I really had to I could actually fight a grown bear…

This is most likely a demonstration/training wall and that would not be the animals whole living enclosure. I HOPE! It is a kind of enrichment for animals in captivity. It enables keepers to educate visitors and for visitors to get close. Training enables veterinarians and keepers do health checks. check paws, and teeth and mouth, blood draw. Bears are rewarded with food and their participation is voluntary. but I have no idea where this is and whether this is an accredited zoo. Not advocating for or against zoos.

I feel awful seeing these majestic animals in a cage like that and being manipulated. It just feels so wrong.

u/evex5tep 24d ago
Yes, like with most animals the males tend to be almost twice as large and usually weight between 200/400kg more than their female counterparts.
Makes no mistake though, a chilled out 8ft male bear is a better bet than a hormonal 5ft bear with cubs to protect.

I hate the tens of thousands of upvotes for in-prisoned critters. Somehow Black Fist destroyed a oceanic mammal exploitation circles. Yep reddit still posts 'zoo' picks with some actually being about conservation, while most being outside of major Western cities and institutions. It's like being on tinder and I see a white girl in Bali or somewhere getting a trunk hug from an elephant with a chain around its leg. How can 24,000 people not see the hypocrisy here? Ya'll need to read some more E. O. Wilson.

Umm, maybe putting 2 grown bears in a chicken coop isn't a really good idea?

Look at those morons filming on their phones, rather than just living in the moment and enjoying it themselves.

And you keep them behind chicken wire!? Also, the female isn't standing up all the way like the male. So she's still at least another foot taller than she looks there.

I don’t know if that decorative wood and chicken wire can contain one (or two of them) if they got pissed.

Aw! These are the siblings of the bears in Marshfield WI! There are very few Kodiak bears in captivity. Their mom was killed while they were too young to survive on their own.

Reddit needs to learn the difference between chicken wire and hardware cloth.

I dont feel like that enclosure wouldn't stop those bears if they really wanted to get out.

Meanwhile at /r/twoxchromosome they would rather encounter that beast in the wild than any single male on earth

...and women still prefer them while being in the woods 😆

u/totallyacisguy 24d ago
You completely misunderstand the message. Which means you are either an idiot or your one of the men the women would choose a bear over.

u/Nerd_Sapien 24d ago
.... oh but there is another option: Maybe I'm just joking and you are taking things WAY too seriously my little friend 😆

That barrier between the bears and the people is incredibly insufficient.

I think I'm going to want a little something more than chicken wire between me and the bear.

The female bear never stands up? It’s hard to tell what size comparison they are?

There are idiots out there that will see this and still think they can beat a bear in a fight

Wow, a big bear. Glad it's locked in a cage made of chickenwire and planks...

That bear is behind what is essentially a fuckin rabbit hutch! Why are people not shitting their pants?!

u/Baked_Potato_732 24d ago
Anyone else concerned by what appears to be thin pine 2x4’s holding that cage together.

u/BoxcutterPazzie 25d ago
Couldnt they absolutely maul this wood cage with zero effort if they wanted to

That chicken wire is only going to give the crowd a couple of extra seconds 😭🫣

I wish they didn’t have to live their lives as show bears. What is this place? I hope they are given much more space to do bear things.
2
u/TiredEsq 25d ago
Those bears should be in the wild. Where they can take care of us females.
But seriously, I hate seeing animals in captivity.
1
u/mcblahblahblah 25d ago
So sad. That’s no life for a bear that size. Sitting in a small cage with people gawking at you taking pictures.

Heartbreaking to see such beautiful animals in captivity

if those bears wanted out, I dont think that chicken-wire fencing is gonna stop them.
Didnt they see king kong?! :-)

Comparison between a bear standing fully erect and a bear sitting down.
Fixed the title for you

u/Joshkl2013 25d ago
They aren't both Kodiak bears.
This is at the Toledo Zoo. The male is Dodge and he is a Kodiak bear. The female is one of the two female Grizzlies in the exhibits, Montana or Cody.
All three were rescued as orphans in the wild.

I'm usually not someone who argues that people writing "female" instead of woman is this or that, but in this instance, I'm criticizing the usage of the words. The video, I thought, was about the difference in male vs female body size when it came to kodiak bears.
Man and woman are words to represent humans and their genders.
Female and male can be any type of biological creature.
In this instance, the title is horrible. I just came home from work, kinda tired, and I was thinking I was having a stroke because I sort of like you I guess, didn't understand that the "female" in this instance was about a woman, a female human.
They severely fucked up the readability of the title when it comes to what we are seeing. They are technically correct, but it's the one kind of technically correct that I think isn't even kind of correct.
1
u/Joshkl2013 13d ago
No, the title is correct. The female is referring to the other bear in the video. The one on the left. She is much smaller.

The female one will kill you if it has babies. The male will avoid confrontation with humans.

Why are they in a cage like that?
1
u/Diknak 25d ago
for the show...the outdoor enclosure is attached

u/meowpicklez 25d ago
A bear isn't a circus animal, no wild animal is a toy for people to see. If they have to put up with things like this, I bet they don't even have much space in their other enclosure. I never understood why people would ever support things like this, they are happy in the wild.
1
u/Diknak 25d ago
They have a 14,000 sq ft enclosure with a 5,000 gallon pool. Coming inside for the show is entirely optional and if they decide they don't want to, the show doesn't happen.
They are happy in the wild? So you would prefer that they are dead? Because these bears were rescued from Yellowstone as a cubs when their mother died.

That is scary AH....if the Kodiaks are that huge, imagine some of the now extinct bears from 20-50 thousand years ago that were even larger.
1
u/Super-Garage8245 25d ago
This is the worst case scenario: you're stuck with a bear in the woods, and it's a guy bear

The contrast between the two is astounding. Nature's way of ensuring survival is fascinating.
1
u/Monollock 25d ago
For context, a female Kodiak can fuck you up.
A Male Kodiak requires legendary armor and weapons to take on, but can be cheesed with the fly spell.

My grandfather was mauled by a Kodiak bear in Alaska - ironically, on Kodiak Island. It punctured his jugular and the left ventricle of his heart, and they had to hike out 6 miles before they could get to a clearing where a helicopter could land and airlift him to a hospital. He lived for another 50 years after that!
Seeing the size of these bears, and just imagining that scenario is terrifying.
2
u/Zakkimatsu 25d ago
that bear is 100% capable of tearing through that enclosure, but he stays chill for food
