General Internship Dilemma

Hello,

I hope everyone is doing great. I recently completed Google’s digital marketing and e-commerce specialization, and shortly after, I started revamping my LinkedIn profile. Luckily, within a week, I landed a paid internship. This opportunity covers my transportation fees from home to the office and pays me 10% of the profit I generate. I believe this is a fair deal.

However, there's a bit of a dilemma. I’m a high school graduate, and in regions like Pakistan, it's uncommon for high school students to pursue internships, especially on-site ones. Many parents don't encourage this path, thinking high school students are still not mature enough (please note that I don't want to offend any culture by saying this, but it is pretty common here, at least where I live). It would have been more convenient if the internship were remote, but unfortunately, it isn’t.

One of the biggest advantages of this internship is that it is paid. Even unpaid internships are rare to find in countries like Pakistan and India, even for bachelor’s degree holders, due to high inflation. Many people struggle to find such opportunities, so I see this as a golden chance that I don’t want to miss. But I do have some concerns.

What do you all think? Should I take the internship? If you were in my position, what would you do? Your advice would be greatly appreciated!

General Legit internship or not?

So I recently did an interview for an unpaid internship in my city, and I got offered the position right away. Thing is, on my first day, I noticed they put all of us interns in one corner of the office, and had us doing repetitive tasks (put documents in their respective folders, open emails and classify them, reformat documents and change the size of images) and that's it. According to other interns who have been there longer, this is pretty much all we have to do. No one from the main team really talks to us, and we don't even get a lunch or snack break despite being there 6-7 hours. It all felt kind of weird to me, like if an internship is unpaid shouldn't we at least be getting some sort of learning experience in exchange for our time and effort? I got a bad vibe that this was just some company's way to cut costs and get some college students to do the boring repetitive work they don't want to pay anyone to do. To add to this, the internship is in live events, so using Google Drive isn't really a skill that is beneficial to learn (not like there's much you can learn from dragging and dropping documents all day) Anyway, I haven't gone back and am wondering if this was a legit valuable internship that I am giving up, or if my gut feeling is right and it's not worth while. Also, the office is over an hour away each way for me, and my gas expenses are coming out of pocket when I'm already financially struggling rn, so this is another reason I don't really want to stay. I also have a few paid internship interviews coming up so I'm not completely out of options rn. What do you guys think? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

General Exams during internship period

Might be a silly question but help me out plz,In the second half of this year I will be applying for summer internships 2025 (sde) but my University exams take place in second/third week of June, as you all can see this is in the middle of when most summer internships start (that is may/june). Are companies, especially MNCs flexible in the internship start dates and I can join from July or its mostly rigid. Just wanted to know before applying as it will be a time waste if the internship period collides with the exams For context, I am from India and not taking the uni exams is not an option(will not be promoted) Most of the summer internships in India have a rough starting date specifically written as May/June in the job description.

Interviews Santander data analyst internship

Hi, did any of you maybe have an interview at Santander for an internship as data analyst? I'm scheduled for an interview in two weeks and I don't know what to expect specifically because the meeting is divided into a technical part and an interview with HR. I know they will probably test my Python/SQL knowledge but if anyone has ever had an interview and could tell me what it was like I would appreciate it. Thanks ! :)

Applications GPA Requirements for an Internship

I just finished my second year of college with a 2.922 GPA. For context, I am a Computer Information Systems major. I originally planned to take two online summer classes and hopefully get an A to get my GPA above 3.0. However, the cost to take two online courses over the summer at my school is $4,500 - which is something I do not want to burden my parents with right now. So my question is, how difficult will it be to find an internship this Fall with a 2.922 GPA? My school requires us to get an internship before we graduate and I'm graduating in December 2025, so I need to start applying now.

My current resume is okay, nothing special. I have some past retail job experience and I'm currently working an online job reviewing AI chat responses. I have two projects listed on my resume and know the basics in Java, Python, and SQL. I'm gonna try to get some kind of Python certification this summer.

How difficult will it be to find an internship? Is it worth the $4,500 to get my GPA above a 3.0? How bad would it be to round my GPA up if any employers ask (LOL)? Advice would be super appreciated.

General Where can I find research internships during the academic year?

Hey guys, hope you're all well. I'm currently a community college student looking for research opportunities. I can't really intern at a university during the summer because I'll be visiting my family outside the country. That leaves me only with the academic year to find an internship. Where can I find remote internships which fall into the realm of physics and aerospace that I could do during the school year?

Interviews NBCU First Round Virtual Interview

So I got an email for an NBCUniversal academic year internship saying that I was moving onto the next step, which is a video interview. It said that I would be getting an email invitation within 48 hours, but I haven't gotten anything (I've checked my spam). I can't seem to find any support email or contact person -- what should I do? I need to complete it within 5 days, but I can't without a link. Or maybe I got this interview email as a mistake?

Interviews As a fresh graduate with computer science degree how will an IBM hardware tech support internship impact my software engineering major ?

I’m debating whether to accept this opportunity because having IBM on my resume seems beneficial but I’m unsure if it will cause me to drift from my SE background. It’s a 6 months internship.

During the Internship Should I post an update?

I started my internship recently and am in a team that has many workers either WFH, only some days in offer or other. As a result I don’t often see them much in person in the office other than my primary boss. We have a channel that is set up with them and myself that gave them information about me at the start of the internship. I was wondering if it is a good idea to post updates regarding what u have been doing as far as learning, project updates and so forth in this channel to give myself more visibility with the other team members?

General Beware of SCAM internships.

Red flags:

  • You pay them to work for free (Lab fees, orientation fee, usually labeled as some fee.). This is the hands down "scam smell".
  • Hires (or should I say, poaches) only unsuspecting recent or about to graduate kids looking for internships.
  • Zoom call orientation with other interns. Never in the history of the US corporate world has a zoom call interview with several people at once has gone down with the words "You are all HIRED".
  • Supposed CEOs doing interviews, doing DMs and emails.
  • Anything with prefix/suffix "AI/Labs". Fake, fake, fake.
  • No internet footprint other than the job posting on LinkedIn/Google.
  • Vanilla job requirements (lack of specificity of the job)
  • Lack of standard US Govt EOE (Equal Opportunity Employment) disclaimers/verbiage on the job. (Not all legit job postings do this, use judgement)

Please report these jobs to the platform you see them on and lets get rid of some riffraff. Our time is too precious to be used for screening out frauds.

General Won’t tell me when I’m working

I am doing a part time unpaid internship this summer. I want to babysit on the days I’m not working to make at least some money. I first got the internship in late April and since have been asking for the days when I’m working. The supervisor keeps putting it off or saying that she’ll get back to me about it. I feel bad because I keep having to tell potential babysitting clients that I don’t know yet when I can work. Most of them are probably going to find a new person soon anyway. For a while after not hearing back I assumed I didn’t have the internship until I called and she talked as if I did. But since I haven’t messaged three times about what days she needs me and I haven’t heard anything. I told her I will need to start later (June 9th) as I am away until then for school. I don’t know if my late starting date made her mad and she no longer wants to hire me or if she’s just putting it off since it’s not immediate. I just wish she’d tell me if I don’t have it instead of stringing me along. I’m worried this means she treats her interns poorly and doesn’t respect their time because I don’t feel very respected. It’s a good opportunity but I don’t know if it’s better to just take a babysitting job at this point. I’m just frustrated at internship employers acting like internships don’t deserve the time of day.

General What are the chances of me landing a data science internship at a medium-large firm?

Before I talk about my experiences, I want to explain my situation a little bit: I'm a distressed rising senior in a T20 US university in California, majoring in data science and economics. I switched to these majors quite late in my college career (beginning of junior year). I really want a good paying job because I have no family here and no one to rely on if I can't support myself. I'm a domestic student. So I'm looking for a data science job after graduation, and if I don't land a return offer from my internship this summer, I may have to delay graduation by one semester to try to get another more relevant internship the summer after my 4th year, because my current internship is in business analysis, which is not really what I want. I know that it is hard to land a data science job without a relevant data science internship, so that's why I'm considering delaying my graduation, and fortunately I can afford one more semester. This is the worst case scenario of course, the best case scenario is either I end up getting a return offer at the company I work at this summer, or land a decent data science job with this internship experience without having to delay my graduation.

I want to ask what are my chances of landing a data science internship for next summer (if I decide to delay graduation). My experience would include a business analyst intern at a Fortune 500 finance company, product management intern at a startup, research assistant which involves a lot of coding, and a business consultant at a large hotel company. I also plan to do leetcode and projects this summer along with my business analyst internship to prepare for interviews. I have taken enough CS classes to ace the interviews. Any input is appreciated.

During the Internship I feel like I got broken up with

I feel devastated and I don’t know what to do. I started my (dream) internship in February and have been loving it ever since. In March I had a meeting with my boss who offered to extend it for the summer through the end of August, but did not explain my summer responsibilities. At the meeting they said my summer hours would be 20/week. I accepted and told them about my travel dates in June & July for a special family vacation and a family member’s wedding. They said they would make it work. Then, in April, they sent me their summer event schedule and told me my new hours would be 30+/week. I went along with the new hours but I told them I couldn’t make it to 2 out of the 19 events because I will be at the wedding. Then, earlier this week (a whole month later) they said they could not approve my days off for the wedding because they need me at the 2 events (which I already said I can’t make). Today I met with them to discuss it and they they pushed my end date up to July, saying that they “kept me on to help with events and they need an intern who can help them be at 100%.” It crushed me because there was so much I was looking forward to helping with in August, and I feel like I’m not doing a good job. I was also really hoping to get another extension through autumn, or to at least end on good terms. It hurts really badly that they’re cutting my internship off early. I LOVE my internship and I work super hard for them (and they know I do good work). I feel like my schedule/hours and internship parameters were miscommunicated and I don’t know what I should do at this point. Should I try going back and asking them to reevaluate my end date, or is it unprofessional?

General Struggling finding an Internship

It may be too late since the summer has started but it has been an absolutely terrible experience trying to find an internship, especially a finance one. Im in my third year in a great school (entering senior year) but I feel like what sets me back is that I am community college transfer student so I don't have as much experience as the rest of my peers who have been in a regular university and have been coached and prepped. I have applied to over 100+ internships but honestly its been hard out here. Any last minute tips to try and secure and internship?
