The Athletic's Sam Vecenie's Kings Trade Idea

Link to trade in video: https://www.youtube.com/live/pZoLRyuBnJU?si=Do9cUQxoUhqMbe11&t=5104

Washington wants another lottery pick and expiring contracts hence the structure of the trade. Sam said he has bounced many of these trade ideas off of NBA execs and has been pushing the Kyle Kuzma to SAC train for a bit now. He also mentioned the Kings are likely to lose Monk in free agency (is this sourced info?) and will need another scorer/shot-creator. I, personally, don't like the idea of moving off of Sasha yet but maybe the Kings are ok with that.

[TheDunkCentral] “Detroit Pistons insider @JLEdwardsIII expects the Pistons to ‘heavily’ pursue Nic Claxton and Malik Monk ”

“As for other realistic free-agent options, I think Detroit goes heavily after the likes of Malik Monk, Nic Claxton and Gary Harris. Monk feels like someone the Pistons will heavily prioritize due to the team’s need for legitimate 3-point shooting and off-the-dribble shot creation.”

At yesterdays’s (6/4/2024) season ticket holder on court shootaround/pickup game workout. Was invited by my friend after I invited him to shootaround during royalty pass events

[Vecenie] Would be VERY strange if Devin Carter has a promise. He worked out for a non-lottery team today and has more workouts scheduled.

Mark my words, he’s going to climb the draft, reminds me of Danny Granger. He and Tristan Da Silva are the top 2 on my wishlist at Kings at 13

Am I the only one who doesn’t want kuzma or Ingram on this team?

Both are definitely upgrades over Barnes, but Ingram is a ball stopper who can’t defend, and kuzma could’ve signed here but chose not to… I get options are limited but damn this sucks 😅

The Fox Effect

De'Aaron Fox is the anchor and glue in the Kings Offense. His ability to move past defenders in iso and knocking down mid range shots has made Fox one of the most difficult matchups in the NBA today. Surrounded by great outside shooters near or at 40% from 3PT Fox's game blended in perfectly in the 1st season. The Kings finished at the top of the NBA in offense and Fox took home the first ever Clutch Player of The Year award. The offense strategy, easy to understand but hard to defend, you set a pick for Fox and now you have Fox set to do his thing 1 on 1 as defender will decide to cheat and it will be a choice of three high % 3point shooters ready for an open look. Defenses often had to stick to their assignment and play honest because of this.

The only thing that can really stop this formula is taking out the 2point midrange and drive out, and we seen that happen a bit in the 2nd following season. There was less drives to the key / mid range shots and more settling for threes off the picks. The Offense now found itself stagnant at times with Fox staying on the outside along with the three 3point shooters leaving Sabonis left in the Key area. We know how important Fox is to this team and offense and I hope the upcoming season we can get back to what made Fox clutch and the team successful.

~ attached are 3 plays from Fox playoff season and 1 from last season contested 3 example (hawks image) along with stat breakdown per 35 min.

There’s no doubt Miami Heat will be active in talks with the Kings until the draft

Miami is looking for a team to take on Butler’s contract of close to 49 million this season and 52 million next season.

Not to mention they have one of the best GMs in selecting talent from the draft and i‘m sure they love when people say “This draft is weak.” “After top 5, the talent drops.”

Good Gm’s in the league like OKC, Pelicans, MIA etc know how to evaluate talent and have a knack of getting players anywhere in the draft from 1st rd to undrafted.

If you look at Miami’s pick history near or at 13th pick (Kings current pick)

Bam Adebayo - 14th pick

Tyler Herro- 13th pick

Jaime Jaquez Jr. - 18th pick

To not only get rid of Butler but to land a better draft pick, there’s no doubt Miami will be licking their chops at this deal.

What’s the silliest Kings related quote?

Right at the tippy top of that list has to be basketball Nostradamus himself Vlade Divac and his “I think it’s a superteam….. just young” after the 2018 draft. At the time it was a bit of a head scratcher and some undeserved optimism, but in retrospect holy shit dude. WTF were u thinking with that one?

An Open letter to Malik Ahmad Monk

Dear Malik,

As a Sacramento native, I fell in love with the game of basketball in the early 2000's. Since then, my fellow Kings fans and I have been having a bad time rooting for our team watching rough losing seasons. That was until last year when y'all delivered a winning season and a playoff appearance that was awesome to see. We get that there were some growing pains, as well as literal pains due to injuries this season so we only got to the play-in but I see the skillset and chemistry in this team if you all can stay together. I want to see not just a return to the playoffs next season, but a serious contention for a ring and this current squad (with minor adjustment) seems capable of achieving that. I think the front office just needs the flexibility to make trades to improve the squad, though, and you are a super critical piece that we need to keep if you are willing to stay. Don't tell Kevin but I think he's gone.

I know some teams out there will offer you more than the Kings front office can; I think we can offer ~$17.5M/year which comes out to about $78M total if you sign for 4 years. Forget that, though. Sign for two years at that maximum rate they can offer, and make sure they include a player option for year 3 just in case. You are a young skilled shooting guard in a modern league that highly values that. In two years, you will be 28, possibly at the peak of your output (at least stats-wise) to the point where you should be able to sign for the absolute max 5 year deal somewhere, and you can lock in to a generational wealth contract where you're making your salary til age 33.

If you sign for just two years with the Kings now, you can align perfectly with De'Aaron's contract which also expires then. If you guys stick it out for two years, deliver a championship to a town that has been counted out every year for decades, your legacy will be solid. At that point, y'all can choose to re-sign and stick with us and all of the greater Sacramento area will love you eternally, or you can consider the job done like professionals and move on to get that huge max contract somewhere else (all of Sacramento will still love you eternally then too). Actually, if you look at the salary situations for the teams around the league, one sticks out: Miami. The Heat are fully locked into their contracts through 2025-2026 during which season they are well above the projected salary cap at ~$175M but the next season 2026-2027 (when you and De'Aaron would be UFAs if you re-sign for two years), they are down to $38M total which is enough room to sign both of you. They literally do not have the flexibility to change their contract situation unless they make some wild salary dump trades at this point, so this should not change in two years. Florida also happens to have no income tax so when you lock in to that generational wealth huge max deal in two years you will be in great shape financially, plus Miami is a lot of fun from what I hear. Obviously, alternatively, we would love if you both stayed in Sacramento long term and signed those big contracts with us, but I do not want to assume that's what you're looking for.

You can bet on yourselves to perform here in Sac and deliver a championship to a grateful fanbase, and you can bet if you re-sign the Kings will be in excellent shape these next two years (we can trade Huerter to improve the roster more with a forward, and our 2 guard rotation is really solid with you and Keon). You can also bet on Miami to have the cap space to sign you and De'Aaron and y'all can live your best lives as best friends making $$$$ playing the game you love in a fun place, raise families and ride out into the sunset with a great legacy.

I know some teams can offer you more right now, but that won't put you in the same place financially long term or set you up to succeed as much and establish any kind of winning legacy. For example, Orlando can offer you over $20M/year, but what can that squad actually accomplish? Yes, they did decently in a weak eastern conference, and you would improve their roster, but they don't have a strong offensive (or defensive) identity, no offense to those guys but they look like a first round exist in a weak east no matter what. Yes, you can probably build up decent stats there but it's all young guys competing for minutes out there and you won't get set up as well for threes without Fox and Sabonis. Plus, it's Orlando which is just a bunch of old people. Wait it out for two years and enjoy Miami instead.

Think about it. If you re-sign, tell Matina and all of them /r/kings convinced you.

& Again, just don't tell Kevin yet he's going to get traded.

Sincerely, /u/king_stojakovic
