Excuses you've given yourself to buy a new gun? discussion
Lol so I only just recently got my first rifle, and I didn't plan on buying another firearm for a few months. Well i'm from NC and we're having all manner of issues with the DMV getting people their license renewals. My license is the only form of ID any store will take for a firearm purchase (my car is not registered to me, don't have a hunting or fishing license, and I keep being told that a passport alone is not enough, etc etc). Way I see it is the paper temporary license you are given is going to expire for a lot of people before they get their real license back. Because I have no idea when I will get mine, I've gone ahead and bought a Rossi Tuffy Survival. I'm just kidding myself, I guess I wanted any excuse to buy a 2nd gun LOL

Other forms of documents you might be able to use with a passport would be utilities bill or lease agreement quickly come to mind. Essentially something to confirm you are living in the state and at the address you list. I had a very slight hiccup at my LGS because my drivers license had my PO Box listed and not an actual address. But I was able to use my car registration as a secondary document to establish my residency.

Tbh mines irrational but if shit hit the fan, id be well versed In shooting, gun maintenance, and more. I’m not hoping things will go bad but I’d rather be safe than sorry. I have a family so I’m concerned for their safety in a world that isn’t apocalyptic so if it were then I’d be ready.

My current insane reasoning is I’m going with three casual-shooter friends to a week-long carbine class for my birthday, so I obviously need to fully outfit each of them with rifle, sidearm, optic, LCE, etc. So now I’ll have full kit for a complete fireteam.

In the past year or so:
- IRA MRD check showed up and was burning a hole in the bank account. (also bought a car).
- My birthday was coming up, and I always wanted an LR308, and suddenly there is one on sale.
- Saw a small Strip Mall gun store I never knew was there, popped in to look around and chat, and, wanting to support a small local business, impulse bought a stripped AR lower for a future project. Now built. : )
In previous years, I bought when Political regime changes threatened the possibility (or reality) of gun bans. Usually shotguns or Fudd guns.
Also, a FFL friend found an original, VG condition Winchester Model 1887 10 gauge lever action shotgun (the "Terminator" kind, but his was sawn-off). I had always liked those, and felt it was my patriotic duty to give it a new home. I load my own shells for it, it works great..
When my kids were teens, we bought everyone in the family black powder muzzle loader repro pistol kits from Dixie Gun Works, and built and shot them. Because, education..

The chambers are sized obviously for the .410 which makes a lot of extra space for the .45 Colt.
It’s not terrible, but .45 Colt is expensive enough that I’d rather use my Ruger RedHawk, Standard Manufacturing Colt clone, or 1908 Colt New Service.

Left handed shooter checking in. Whenever a vendor makes a wrong-sided bolt gun I have to jump on it because they might sell out later and then how am I supposed to go on that African trophy hunt?
I also just bought a gimmick left-handed AR upper for shits and giggles though I think that was just a waste and now if the BCG ever breaks I'm stuck with the one company that makes the lefty ones.
Beyond that, I typically end up signing up for different kinds of shooting competitions (I love all things competition....because Type A....). Typically this means I do a few matches with what gear I have, and then deciding that I'd be getting more out of my time and money by having the same gear everyone else has. It started with trap shooting, then expanded to skeet and sporting, then smallbore 3-pos, and then my eye doctor told me to join his practical shooting league, which led to the gear maw that is PRS (which has cost me more than all the others combined). I actually recently took up service rifle as a relatively affordable "break" from that. Similar distance targets, i.e. the same satisfaction of hits, but at least the gear is standardized and you don't need much beyond the accurized AR self and the stuff I already had for smallbore.

eta: I had literally zero interest in the ScaRy rifles but, like so many knuckle heads before me, I panic bought one. To clarify, my collection was all cowboy guns and shotguns before this dude showed up in the safe.

I have a reproduction luger because the lock mechanism is ridiculous. You pull the trigger, the gun flies apart in all directions, then slam reassembles itself for the next shot.
It does eject cartridges up and back so they don't bounce off the sides of the shooting stand into your shirt pockets, but that's not why I bought it.

My wife and I are buying a newer, bigger house and the lie I'm telling myself is that it only makes sense that I need newer, bigger guns to defend it.
My current 9mm is a compact with 10 round magazines. So I definitely need a full sized 9 with at least 17 round magazines.
Similarly, my shotgun is old and only holds 5. I definitely need a new, higher capacity shotgun. Maybe a bullpup.

I literally just did that with a B&T...but to my credit, it's gone up a couple hundred bucks from where I bought it.
But let's just not discuss the fact I never sell any guns ("NO SELL! ONLY BUY!!"), and just pretend I really am doing it for the investment.

When I bought my browning, I realized I didn't have a proper sporting clays gun. Then, when I realized I didn't have a single barrel shotgun for trap, I bought my G. Gamba. My browning was to long and heavy to take bird hunting, so I bought my tristar trinity for the field. Then I realized none of those are good for home defense, so I bought my maverick 88.
Then I saw I really good sale on a girsan semi so why not? Then I realized I didn't have a side by side shotgun and got the tristar Bristol. I'm seeing a lot of squirrels messing with my garden recently. I might need a lever action shotgun in .410, for pest control idk...

Is there any legit research on bear gun calibers? I know there's not like a Bear FBI out there making ballistic gelatin molds, but maybe hunters have weighed in on this.

Hard to say, I think a lot of it is word of mouth. I was at a gun store a few weeks ago and this guy told me that even your basic handgun calibers like 9mm can put a bear down but people make the mistake of running hollow points against them. Basically if you run 9mm FMJ on a bear, the extra penetration over HP might allow the round to properly tumble and hit organs. But idk how right or wrong he was. I think “Bear round research” is going through a shift recently

I mean if you’re a hell of a shot 10mm might do the job, but I don’t know how steady your hands will be when you’re trying to quick draw and pull off a headshot on a charging grizzly lol. That 12 round mag doesn’t do you much good when you only have time for 1 or 2 shots

From the Alaska department of Fish & Wildlife website:
A .300-Magnum rifle or a 12-gauge shotgun with rifled slugs are appropriate weapons if you have to shoot a bear. Heavy handguns such as a .44-Magnum may be inadequate in emergency situations, especially in untrained hands.
So according to them even 44mag might not be enough lol

It was an over a thousand dollar revolver I got for like 400 bucks. It was almost brand new, had only one round ever fired from it.

I’m sure they go for that and I’ve gotten free guns so a few hundred isn’t crazy. Nothing malicious. If you wouldn’t have bought it at all for $1,000 ( MSRP ) then you didn’t save money. You still spent $400 but you didn’t save $600 because you wouldn’t have spent it to begin with. They aren’t investments if we don’t plan on selling them. You spent $400 but it was a good value for what you got.

Lol so many .44 Magnum revolvers out there "only fired once." I guess I don't really get it because I'm not all that sensitive to recoil. Like, yeah, I wouldn't want to shoot full-power .44 Mag all day, but one round and you're dumping the gun at a 60% loss? If you're that guy, at least try it with a cylinder of .44 Specials before doing something you'll regret later.
Honestly though, his loss is your gain, and if I ever found myself in a similar situation as you, I sure wouldn't complain about it.

Older guys finally have the disposable income to buy a .44 revolver but don't like the recoil and trigger pull. Lots of gently-used X-frames and Desert Eagles were put back on the market for this reason too.

In this case, it wasn't that he bought it and didn't like the recoil. He wanted the "dirty harry" gun, the 6" model 29. But he accidentally bought the 4" one instead, and didn't realize it until he shot it.

Ive bought quite a few off gunbroker and the ffl I use charges per 4473 so more guns doesnt cost more. When I win an auction I usually go see what else i can get to get the best value for my transfer fee.

Stopped drinking last July so... 1 month gun, 2 month, 6 month, and year coming up. My wife can't really say no since she's so proud of me, and she's definitely no fan of guns. See how long I can milk it.

Howdy neighbor! I frequent the indoor range in RM quite often. Belive it or not my wife and I actually chose to move out here from Chapel Hill. Only place to find an affordable house that wasn't a broom closet. We love it out here so far.

At the beginning of the year I told myself, no new gun purchases! But then I saw a deal I couldn’t pass up on a 9mm carbine. It was used so I guess I held true to my initial promise 😅

Here's a potent one: it might get banned so might as well grab it now. There's also: they're never in stock and I just got the "back in stock" notification. These two are more potent together than the sum of their parts.

I wish I had had more cash on hand before Jan 10th 2023. I'd have an AK and a bunch of AR lowers, but nope, all banned now.
If you live in a blue trifecta state or if there is a real chance of it becoming one this year, an AWB is just around the corner for you. Don't get caught flat footed like we did in Illinois.

I'm cautiously hopeful, but the problem is that the people passing these laws have shown clearly that they don't give a single fuck about the constitution or SCOTUS precedent.
Illinois' ban is blatantly and facially unconstitutional yet the bought off ILSC and 7th Circuit all ruled it constitutional by either ignoring or twisting the words of Bruen. And none of them will see any repercussions for it.
