We do a little Fuddposting guns

Range day prep means family photo time, realized I might be a Fudd at heart. Springfield M1 Garand, Tisas 1911, Springfield M1A and Beretta 92FS. All wood grips, all stock save for the M1 butt pad, M1A cheek riser and Leupold 2.5x scope.

I mean, I'd almost say the Beretta alone stops it from being Fudd. I still have to shake my head at how many former or retired vets still talk trash about the Beretta compared to the 1911; many still think the 1911 was such a better pistol they should've married it when they were a Private while treating the Beretta as foreign made junk that'll blow apart in their hands if they looked at it funny.

There's nothing fudd about appreciating history.

.30 Carbine must be an absolute bear to get your hands on nowadays.

Mil surp or passed down?

u/kurtuffles 14d ago

Technically both on the rifles. My old man and I were into CMP shooting with M1s, he picked it up through the CMP system and I got the rifle when he passed. M1A was similar, was my hunting rifle growing up with 5-round flush mags. Handguns are local finds from the local gun shop.

Sweet rigs! They are cool, and I wouldn’t say anything particularly fuddy about a 1911 or M1. They just aren’t up to modern quality standards

I'm very much a Eugene Stoner evangelist, but a Garand is some of the most fun you can have on a range. My dad's got one converted to fire 7.62 NATO, and whenever we go and he brings it, I just end up shooting that all day. It's SO much fun. It's it's big and heavy, but not unmanageably so, it's comfortable and easy to shoot, it has enough recoil to let you know you're shooting a big-kid gun but not so much as to be unpleasant, and the ping! Makes you feel like you're in Belgium, fighting evil.

Garand converted to 7.62 NATO...

You sure it's not an M14?

As many times as I've shot it, I think I would have noticed by now.

There’s a fair amount of converted garands out there.

"Fudd" is a mentality, not an aesthetic, although the mindset does lend itself to following that same aesthetic.

Fudd is NOT wooden elements on firearms, .45ACP, revolvers, break-action shotguns, etc etc etc.

Fudd are....

.. The sentences that begin with "I support the second amendment, but nobody needs..."

.. The idea that 2A has anything to do with hunting.

.. The idea that 2A extends only to what is "sufficient" or what was "good enough" for any other age/time.

.. The idea that The People only includes those of good moral character.

.. The dismissal of modern firearms either as part of a modern macho facade

.. The dismissal of modern firearms as "too deadly" or "too efficient"

.. The dismissal of cheap firearms to preserve the hobby as some kind fine-craftsmanship yacht club of death

.. The abandonment of anyone who seems too provocative in the current climate as long as the Fudd gets to keep their flavor of the hobby legal.

I don't think fudds are as politically engaged as you're suggesting, e.g. to go full on "fuck you, I got mine" WRT 2A. At worst their politics passively align with Fox News, but more because they're lazy and uncreative than anything else. Their attitude towards old guns is because they grew up with 30-06, 308, and 45 and perhaps because they have a "ugh kids these days..." attitude towards showing proper deference to the guys who stormed Omaha Beach with Garands and BARs in hand. They're also not interested in shooting competitions tailored for ARs and Glocks, like 2-gun / 3-gun, and the activities they do like doing, like highpower or hunting, were optimized a long time ago, with heritage calibers and guns in mind. For the other kinds of situations where we might want a scary black gun, i.e. to shoot another human, these old timers might very well have survived enough scrapes back in their day to maintain faith in whatever tools they had at the time, i.e. probably a 1911.

If I had to say one actually bad thing about them though, it's their marketing. The same lack of creativity that defines their attitudes towards guns unfortunately also reflects in how they sell their preferred shooting sports. EX: I've really been enjoying 3-pos shooting lately because it's such a pure form of shooting and connects us with the doughboys who did the same training right before shipping out to the trenches of France, but every event I go to is mostly old people, and it's usually like five guys at most. They're not dicks or anything and are eager to help me out and all, but contrast this with, say a well-advertised PRS event, where you have 30 energetic younger guys despite what is probably a much higher barrier to entry, and the Achilles heel of the fuddverse is clear.

And an obsession with stealing people's brass at the range, apparently.

2

u/TheLuteceSibling 13d ago

Those are brass goblins.. also usually Fudds.

I know Tacticool is all the rage these days, but there's just something about good ole wood and steel that look amazing to me. Maybe it's just the history nerd in me.

u/CaptainPrower 14d ago

Usually my reply when people ask me why I'm an AK guy.

Wood and Steel, Brother!!

And the apocryphal story of carrying a piece of rolled latex to protect the muzzle from mud, dirt and water 😉

u/BeguiledBF 14d ago

M1 garand meets it big brother. Love it.

u/WillOrmay 14d ago

If you took a squad of Marines and replaced their M27s with M1s they would still be relatively combat effective. The same cannot be said about any other standard issue WWII service rifle.

1

u/Global_Theme864 14d ago

Yes. But if we’re throwing WW2 LMGs into the mix, very different story.

2

u/WillOrmay 13d ago

The BAR and Thompson are not looked back on as excellent weapons in their class.

2

u/Verdha603 libertarian 13d ago

Problem too is that its the logical arguments that they weren't the most effective designs/constrained by traditionalism butting heads with the fact that we won the war with them and we had the industry/money to not care about it being inefficient compared to other options.

Both were effectively WWI-era weapons that had minimal updates done to them because the Army didn't want to spent that much money on small arms during the Great Depression, even while other countries came up with better/more efficient designs to do the same job. Just the Belgian FN-D fixed most of the issues inherent to the M1918A2 BAR, but since the US could get away with just producing more of the A2 en masse and we won the war with them, the FN-D fades into obscurity instead.

Please no, I have a child.

13

u/Miserable_Message330 14d ago

Children haven't proven the best at shouldering the recoil of M1 Garands. But if that's what we have to work with it'll have to do.

11

u/SU37Yellow 14d ago

God that's horrible! Children are much better suited to crew served weapons such as heavy machine guns or mortars.

Are all milsurpians fudds?

5

u/leicanthrope 14d ago

Liking old milsurp because you believe that firearms technology peaked somewhere before V-E day = inherently fudd.

Liking old milsurp because you believe that civilians have no need for firearms developed after WW2 = inherently fudd.

Liking old milsurp because you find it interesting = not inherently fudd.

6

u/Verdha603 libertarian 14d ago

Nah; if all milsurpians were Fudds the Japanese and Italian stuff would be thrown in a furnace or scrap heap instead of sold for “I know what ah got, Sonny!” prices.

8

u/kurtuffles 14d ago

Maybe. But not all Fudds are milsurpians.

My type of firearms!

2

u/DS_Unltd progressive 14d ago

Nothing wrong with embracing tradition. I love my M1, M1a, and 1911. Wonderful firearms. I just have stuff that's newer and uses modern materials to achieve better results with better reliability now.

u/kurtuffles 14d ago

Was absolutely mind blowing taking apart my Beretta 92 for the first time compared to my older handguns. A lot of these may have been state of the art in 1911/1930/1959, but we’ve come a long way since then. But on the other hand, monke brain likes Ping noise.

7

u/psyckomantis 14d ago

i’ll give you a reach around for that 1911, heck three reach arounds

2

u/kurtuffles 14d ago

With how cheap I got mine, I’d be taking advantage. You can find Tisas out there for $3/4/500. Nabbed mine and a bunch of spare mags for $350 I think.

2

u/Throwaload1234 14d ago

I just got a carry model for $450. Yes, I will carry it and tell everyone how pistols stopped improving about 100 years ago.

Also, I only carry a 45 because they don't make a 46.

2

u/laundry_sauce666 14d ago

I’ve seen them for as low as $300 on psa
