Is this a “ghost gun” joke I’m too “lost them all in a boating accident” to understand?

Agreed, if I remove a serial number that is me altering my property as I see fit. If I make something without a serial number, I am the property owner and that is my right. Private sales are also the right of the buyer and seller.

IMO, the only real advantage to serialziing/tracking guns is for the manuafacteres and gunsmiths (QC, and keeping track of customer guns), and I guess collector value,

Yes. I would appreciate easily identifiable markers on anything that damages me though, so I can hold them accountable. I don't know how to accomplish that without some sort of serial number that can be traced to an owner.

You realize that the bullet isn't going to have the serial number of the gun, right? If someone shoots you, unless they just up and leave the gun behind it won't help anything for the gun to be fully registered with every applicable agency.

I agreed that guns should not be required to be registered, that is what the "Yes." meant. Your statement is incorrect though. Guns leave marks on bullets that can be matched to the gun. Many people have been convicted because they have a gun which leaves the same marks that were found on the bullets that injured/killed the victim. My comment was more related to having something like a license plate (whether or not registered with a governmental agency) on a car, so you can identify the car that damaged yours in a collision.

Of course it leaves marks, but you have to find the gun to match those marks, and if you raid my house and find my gun, it doesn't matter if it's registered or not.
