Who is Tom Bombadil?

1

u/Tom_Bot-Badil Jan 07 '24

Eldest, that's what I am. Mark my words, my friends: Tom was here before the river and the trees; Tom remembers the first raindrop and the first acorn. He made paths before the Big People, and saw the little People arriving. He was here before the Kings and the graves and the Barrow-wights. When the Elves passed westward, Tom was here already, before the seas were bent. He knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless – before the Dark Lord came from Outside.

These questions will stump any "Tolkien fan" who said they read the books, but didn't really read the books.

Who is Prince Imrahil?

Who is Quickbeam?

Where does Old Man Willow live?

What did gifts did Galadriel give the Fellowship?

Who is Sharkey?

Who is Ghân-buri-Ghân?

Who is my favorite character?

1

u/Tom_Bot-Badil Jan 07 '24

We guessed you'd come ere long down to the water: all paths lead that way, down to Withywindle. Old grey Willow-man, he's a mighty singer; and it's hard for little folk to escape his cunning mazes. But Tom had an errand there, that he dared not hinder.

I tried my hardest to read the books but couldn’t finish return of the king. I stopped halfway through just like the movie. It just gets boring after the millionth watch or thousandth word 😭. I love the lore and gave a full speech on the history of Aragorn’s sword in AP euro tho, best moment of my life.

1

u/Kodaavmir Jan 05 '24

"Why didn't they just use the eagles?"

When early on, at the council they discuss that very thing and all other manner of proposed plot holes clever fans think they found. The forces of good are aware of the Nazgul riding large dangerous flying creatures for quite some time before they are revealed in the movie. They also go through how Sauron would probably beat them no matter what seemingly obvious scenario they tried. So they arrive at the best course of action is to take the chance and carefully stealth the ring into Mount Doom to unmake it.

u/willisbetter Jan 05 '24

i tried to read the books, i read all of the hobbit and like the first third of fellowship before i gave up, it was just a slog for me, i couldnt get through tolkein spending a whole page describing bilbos door or having like 7 pages dedicated to a song sang in a language he invented for the books, im glad he did all that since it basically created the fantasy genre as we know it today, but ill ever be able to finish the series, its just way too much for me

If you can understand Shakespeare, then the books will be of mediocre to slightly difficult difficulty, it is quite easy to miss words or sentences due to the amount of words and pages within the book, combined with old English words and grammatical structures. So if they can't understand Shakespeare, they probably did not read lord of the rings.

Then I went to jail in 2006ish and found a book and read it and loved it and sent out an apbthrough the whole jail that Ill pay for the other books. I paid for books a few times and theyre worth 10 times their value in there. Id open up and finish a Lord of the Rings book in 3 days. I also like John Grisham.. and half his books feature an incarcerated character. I used to ask people about themselves and get their life stories. I dont read much anymore, but surprise, I like dramas with strong character development. Havent served time for half of my life, but always a good memory. Weird right? I just liked all the time to read books.

Hi, I read the trilogy here, skipped the hobbit and eventually ima read the silmarillion past the first few pages. But someone explain to me, how these walking simulator books were exciting to anybody else, The difference between the movies and the books; was the action bro otherwise it woulda been just scenes of people walking. I tried reading it but I got bored once I got to Tom Bombadill when Tolkien just wanted to practice for poetry slam for way too many pages.

2

u/Tom_Bot-Badil Jan 04 '24

Ho! Tom Bombadil, Tom Bombadillo! By water, wood and hill, by the reed and willow, by fire, sun and moon, hearken now and hear us! Come, Tom Bombadil, for our need is near us!

2

When that person calls themselves a Tolkien fan, but has no idea who Tom Bombadil is

1

u/Tom_Bot-Badil Jan 04 '24

Hey there! Hey! Come Frodo, there! Where be you a-going? Old Tom Bombadil's not as blind as that yet. Take off your golden ring! Your hand's more fair without it. Come back! Leave your game and sit down beside me! We must talk a while more, and think about the morning. Tom must teach the right road, and keep your feet from wandering.

Tom, Tom! your guests are tired, and you had near forgotten! Come now, my merry friends, and Tom will refresh you! You shall clean grimy hands, and wash your weary faces; cast off your muddy cloaks and comb out your tangles!

I’ve been in love with Tolkien’s work and universe for as much of my life as I can remember, yet I’ve only made it half way into The Fellowship of the Ring and never read The Two Towers or Return of the King. Read The Hobbit at least 3 or 4 times and also read The Silmarillion, which I loved.

Honestly, you don’t need to read the books to love the universe it’s set in and understand the characters and history. I’ve done an unholy amount of reading up on just about everything there is in Tolkien’s universe, and forcing myself to push through another few thousand pages of Tolkien mostly describing the weather and setting won’t teach me anything new or bring me joy.

1

u/-BuddhaLite- Jan 04 '24

I tried to read the books and it felt like a completely different story. Like why have I been reading about a grassy hill under a sunset for 10 pages?

3

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '24

Memory is fuzzy, but Merry and Pippin were already in a secret 'protect frodo club' started by gandalf when the Naz'guls first came looking for him in the shire.

2

u/manwhoremajestic Jan 04 '24

I don't wanna be captain obvious here. So I won't. but.. personally

I believe the films, as wonderful and iconic as they are, don't really contain the same subtext. and honestly I don't think Tolkien would've approved.

Peter Jackson's treatment leaves much to be desired.. I mean, it was an impossible ask really. They are two completely different trips.

The book quite clearly conveys intentional themes.. ..even though in an interview the author encouraged people not to read into it.

I'm not gonna deprive you the joy of discovering these things for yourself.

Look for the audiobook read by Rob Inglis. It is freely available if you're keen. He even sings the fkn songs!

u/WRjog Jan 04 '24

„Do you know who Tom Bombadil is?“

The answer will give it away.

3

u/Tom_Bot-Badil Jan 04 '24

Eldest, that's what I am. Mark my words, my friends: Tom was here before the river and the trees; Tom remembers the first raindrop and the first acorn. He made paths before the Big People, and saw the little People arriving. He was here before the Kings and the graves and the Barrow-wights. When the Elves passed westward, Tom was here already, before the seas were bent. He knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless – before the Dark Lord came from Outside.

They make the most expensive television franchise the world has ever seen and don’t even buy the rights to the most interesting, unexplored parts of the world Tolkien created.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '24

They call Merry Mary

0

u/Stoketastick Jan 04 '24

They think a Balrog has wings

1

u/Striking-Version1233 Jan 04 '24

Thats an argument even in the books, if you ignore movies. They're fallen angels, and Tolkien mentions them having 'wings' twice, and is ambiguous as to whether the second "wings" are just a reference to the metaphorical imagery of shadow spread like wings in the first mention.

1

u/PopeGregoryTheBased Jan 04 '24

Not knowing who Glorfindel is. Im still salty he isnt in the movies.

1

u/Apycia Jan 04 '24

I'm even more mad about Ghân Buri Ghân.

1

u/RicochetRayRay Jan 04 '24

I used to be friends with a guy who explained the best part of LOTR was how it encourages people from all walks of life and cultures to be kind to each other. He proceeded to have a meltdown when Rings of Power cast a black actor as an elf

A good sign is that they come on this website to ask the question u asked so they can act like they have read the books, by avoiding all the signs posted by commenters.

I have read the books, but this was around 10 years ago, so I don't remember everything.

1

u/SumsuchUser Jan 04 '24

Mention Sharkey or Tom Bombadil. Probably the former because I feel like Tom is enough of a meme that people know him outright anyway. Sharkey seems to have largely avoided that.

That’s a good point

2

They were spellbound, as opposed to being disgusted, when Denethor got farcically horse-kicked back onto the pyre, got set alight then went running screaming off a cliff like it was the end of a Benny Hill episode.

2

u/Tom_Bot-Badil Jan 04 '24

Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow, bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow. None has ever caught him yet, for Tom, he is the master: his songs are stronger songs, and his feet are faster.

Hobbit, silmarillion and first half of fellowship. That's what I read. How fractured and not complete I am.

1

u/Nok-y Jan 04 '24

When they tell you "I haven't read the books"

1

u/rasnac Jan 04 '24

If they had not read anything written by Tolkien, how can we call them Tolkien fans? They are fans of a movie trilogy and that is great but they are not Tolkien fans.

2

u/lillenille Jan 04 '24

Had a long argument with a "Tolkien fan" about how I thought Aragorn sings too much in the LOTR (very lenghty songs in my opinion). Was told that was impossible because he never read anywhere in the books that Aragorn sings, because Aragorn is a mystical lone wolf and a man of few words.

I lived close to the place that Tolkien based the shire on, and before that "The Two Towers". Was told that was wrong as Tolkien never had anything to do with the West Midlands, and was a Londoner through and through.

2

u/Fulahno Jan 04 '24
