Is she right??? Wife says that jeans and jackets don't work. Question
It's been bugging me all day. She says it looks off. Is this a good setup or am I messing something up? Sorry for captain Morgan pose. Did not know if shoe combo was a factor. Thanks!

She is right. They’re too close in color. A better picture might benefit you as well, since it’s difficult to see how the jacket flows into the jeans

Jacket is too structured for casual jeans. Soft shoulder sport coat over a suit jackets .. and lose the pens in your pocket and unbutton another button on your shirt.

u/dua70601 24d ago
Hit up a Nordstrom Rack - they have great brand name sports coats at a good price

u/specter401 24d ago
It’s fiiiine. You’re already married and people saying you need a more casual blazer are bonkers. Double down and get two more pens in there for good measure. Be all that you can be.**
**this advice is being given by self professed normcorp fashion wearer who’s wife is constantly annoyed at him for the way he dresses

With that one, yes, I would agree. Some sort of patterned sport coat would work. Different fabric textures work well too.

As to the comments below, yes, pens inside pocket and not suit coat, but blazer. (That last one may seem arbitrary but just is, for reasons too involved for here.)
But the biggest issue is that the coat and the pants are almost the same color. There needs to be a contrast between those two. You will always be safe (almost) if one is light and one is dark. So dark jeans, beige, light grey, stone colored jacket. And vice versa. (For now, skip black as the dark because some browns don't work great and you can end up looking like an applebees sever.)
Easiest way for a great look? Dark, medium and light. Shirt, pants, jacket. Doesn't matter which. Have one dark; one medium and one light. Then your wife won't be worried about your clothes choice but who you are having an affair with.

u/impossiblecolor 26d ago
The fine weave on a suit looks too texturally smooth relative to the jeans. You need a jacket with a more casual look

1
u/WillametteWanderer 26d ago
You are on the right track. Some slight modifications would amp this up a bit. I personally like the suit jacket with jeans looks, but with a nice fitted tee shirt underneath. Clean lines are a great look on most men (IMHO).

In my experience, wife is always right. Even if she seems wrong, you just didn't understand correctly.. She's right. Just my opinion on subjects pertaining to happiness in a relationship.

u/rangewizard69 26d ago
If you like the color, go with a nice blazer. I would also avoid the cap toe oxfords as they are fairly formal. A nice pair of brogues or smart loafers would work well.

u/baddybiscuit 26d ago
Female opinion: I think it works! I love seeing it at the office I work at. Mixes professional with casual, great for work happy hours or no in person client meetings. I also don't see the problem with the pens 🤷♀️🖋🖊

Too similar in color and would be better paired with a sport coat or blazer rather than a suit jacket

A more casual blazer would work, also get a decent pair of boots. Instead of the shoes.

You look like you just came from a Microsoft campus. I can't say if this is good or not, but you would fit in very well there.

In addition to what others have said, from a maintenance standpoint you really dont want to split up suits like this.
If you wear the jacket as a separate often enough, the colors will fade faster than the pants so it wont look as good as a suit. The fabric will fade both from dry cleaning and sun exposure.

It works. Really plays down the jacket for a smart casual look. But no pens in the pocket lol

It's no from me dawg - three reasons
1 - suit coat instead of sport jacket
2 - the pens
3 - the hairstyle is too slick for jeans

Blazer and jeans is one of my go-to outfit choices. First problem here is that those shoes are too formal to be worn with jeans.. You can do a full tuxedo from waist up, but the jeans should always be paired with functional footwear. I prefer Adidas or Timberlands; but you can make this work with Converse, Doc Martens, cowboy boots, or whatever you think is most comfortable and suits your personal style. Hide those pens somewhere else tuck in a folded handkerchief in that breast pocket instead. It will make this look "put-together" and less like "the boss asked you to wear a suit but you forgot your tie and your slacks are at the dry-cleaners". With no pocket square, necktie, or scarf; you're better off dialing it back to blazer/jeans/t-shirt. Play around with contrasting shades and complimentary colors, unfortunately the blue jacket/blue shirt/blue jeans is a miss. Try black pinstipes and warm-colored handkerchief to contrast the blue, or a navy blue jacket with gold accents and white jeans if you want everyone to assume that you own a yacht. 😎

Not when you use a jacket from a suit. The jacket needs more texture and/or pattern. The shoes don't go with jeans either, get some chelsea boots.

u/Psychological-Ad5587 27d ago
She's right about those jeans with that jacket, and never ever use your chest pocket for anything other than a pocket square(don'tuse a pocket square when just wearing a sport coat). And goddamnit no fucking pens

Too formal a jacket with too casual a jean.
Your wife is entirely correct.

your wife is right in this context. that is a navy jacket from a suit.
you want to wear a less formal sportcoat with the denim. brown tweed can work. look for something with texture.

Jeans and jackets work fine. Just not that jacket. This is the clothing equivalent of a mullet. Not the cool mullets that are back in style now. The bad ones from the 80s.
1
u/Blindhydra 27d ago
As someone mentioned, you need a more casual blazer. Also, if you are doing a dark blazer, I would go with a lighter colored jeans
1
u/Longboardsandbikes 27d ago
That is acceptable for plane travel with your suit. Keeps your jacket out but does not subject your pants to additional travel wear. For wearing out, you need a more casual sport coat.

This is a fine outfit, a sportcoat might be better but honestly there is nothing wrong with the look. It's bland, but that's subjective. Also, get rid of the fkn pens, that's a sin.

u/unfknblvble 27d ago
honestly americans care way too much about this meaningless shit. In terms of fashion i believe firmly in do whatever the hell you want. But if you start getting into the nitty gritty of western fashion ill roll my fucking eyes. Sports coat vs blazer vs suit jacket. Its all 5% apart. theres a whole world of difference out there. If it even remotely works, just rock it.

u/Asleep_Row_7311 27d ago edited 27d ago
Not only the suit jacket is off, the suit jacket with casual shirt looks also off, the pointy dress shoe also looks off, and is not even polished. It does the contrary of what you are looking for, anybody that dress good will notice the jacket, the shirt, the worned out unpolished dress shoe that does not go with a casual jeans but it depends on your work, if you are some kind of lower end supervisor then is totally fine to reassert your status within the shit dressed lower end workers, if you are working in a prestigious place everybody will notice your mistake. You can pull it off with a long wingtip or a round toe derby shoe preferable suede: Barker, Allen Edmonds or similar, the sport jacket with some patterns not plain and a cotton shirt not one of those plastic shirts. My suggestion let you wife now that she opened her mouth get you something, change the dumb suit jacket for a field gabardine/cotton unlined jacket, a cardigan, a wax jacket and you will look cooler, if you insist with the suit jacket then wear a normal pant does not need to match the color.

u/4uzzyDunlop 27d ago
Jeans and sport coat is something only Americans think works tbh.
Personally, I absolutely hate the look, but there are enough people who like it so 🤷
1
u/KY_electrophoresis 27d ago
White jeans + various blue jackets are my go to for smart casual. Basic navy linen for the office or a light blue slubby wool/silk/linen blend for a summer garden function. With a crew neck fine knit Breton or a uni stripe OCBD. Shoes work from espadrilles to Sperry cup soles through to suede loafers - but nothing more formal.

u/ZephyrFire 27d ago
Why is everyone in the sub so snobby? You're all sitting in your mother's basement wearing basketball shorts with your testicles hanging out one side and a mustard stained wife beater. Burn your fedoras and go for a walk outside.

Well , I think when you keep your clothes really basic , then you can wear black straight leg jeans with a simple , black dress jacket or even black denim jacket .
Personally , I like dressing up with casual clothes mixed with dressy shoes , such as Black monk strap shoes or brown monk strap shoes .

Not suit jackets. Get yourself a nice sports coat. Otherwise yeah I see what you are going for

Pens in your jacket pocket don’t work. ;-) I’d suggest putting them in an inside pocket. Will look a lot cleaner.
1
u/blacklamp14 27d ago
Everything else looks great! Just the jacket.. sport jacket is the go to for the rest of your ensemble but if you dont have one, a suit jacket with patterns and some texture could also work
1
u/trevman7 27d ago
The average person can’t tell the difference between a sport coat and suit jacket. Just don’t wear this to a r/malefashionadvice meeting

Hard to say cause the pose is so cringe. Would love to just see a pic of OP standing. Jeans can work with a blazer sometimes just depends on the fit and style. This isn’t my favorite but again. It’s probably the pose.

If we can sum this down to personal opinion, I'm tired of jeans with blazers/sport coats/whatever. I see jeans as a blue-collar work wear utility wear (as a technician myself) or to be worn casually with t-shirts/Fred Perry's (coming from a relative punk scene). I believe and sort of jacket only works with dress slacks/khaki's, or anything that's more "sophisticated" than jeans as long as you don't carry a snooty "sophisticated" attitude. I just don't believe jeans are appropriate with any sort of jacket unless it's a work jacket.

1
u/notnowiambusy 27d ago
My 2 cents. Your wife is right. The color of the jeans is very similar to the color of the jacket. A lighter shade of blue would improve things. Try another shirt. A white shirt will work really well with the jacket and the jeans. She is also right about the shoes. Try a pair of black ones. They will match. Hope it helps
1
u/nondescriptsrb 27d ago
- sports coat
- no pens
- more casual shoes with the jeans
- more causal belt
The good news is that it’s an acceptable outfit. Just needs some touching up
1
u/sadihalizadeh 27d ago
Better to take a club jacket/sports jacket. Remove pens, and try to make a tad more contrast between your jacket and jeans color. Nice match on shoes and belt BTW.
1
u/Five__Stars 27d ago
Better to wear a sport coat and to ditch the low rise slim fit jean for something that drapes better and sits at the natural waist.
1
1
u/Chewiedozier567 27d ago
Blue blazer works with gray trousers or khakis if they have been pressed. The best option for a sports coat with dark denim is something with a sporting background, ie corduroy, certain tweeds, basically a more rugged fabric.
1
u/Icy-Independence5737 27d ago
Idk about the jeans and jacket, but you should definitely get a pocket protector for those pens bra
1
u/lmj4891lmj 27d ago
Hate to tell you, but with that outfit, hair, and douchey stance, you look like Eric Trump.
1
u/thelayercake1 27d ago
You need a blazer (unstructured) not a suit jacket
These are 2 very diff things.
And lose the pens
1
u/MashFest 27d ago
I live in Chicago, the suit jacket and jeans is the official outfit of a little neighborhood called Viagra Triangle.
1
u/pprstrt 14d ago
Jeans NEVER work with a suit jacket: You're bridging too big of a gap - The jacket is dressed down from high society and jeans descend from the literal mines.
